    Ladysmith Black Mombaso

    by Billyboy112 on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

Ladysmith Black Mobaso was everything we had expected. My wife is a fan of the group, and I surprised her. She did not know which group until they walked on stage. She was pleased. My only complaint involves those larger chairs one can buy today for $12 or $15. They should be kept behind a line toward the back as they block the view of others. A number of jerks came late and tried to set up the large chairs in front of others who were respectful and sitting on blankets or the small beach chairs. This resulted in confrontation. It easily could be solved if the larger chairs were kept behind a line toward the back. Thank you.

    Ladysmith/Los Lobos -- great concert

An unusual combo, but wonderful music, great venue and lovely evening. Fine musicians!

    Ladysmith Black Mambazo was refreshing!

by mayagra on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

I've seen them about 15 years ago and they were good then and still going strong. They are to be enjoyed with your family.

    Not unbelievable

by Straitghtcurly on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

I was really excited to see Ladysmith Black Mambazo... looking forward to it for months. First of all, when I look at the ticket to the event and it says "Ladysmith Black Mambazo with Los Lobos" I would think the opening act would be the smaller type "Los Lobos". I was disappointed that Los Lobos didn't open. My girlfriend and I had planned on Los Lobos opening as she had to work and wasn't going to make the 7p start time... that was too bad. Second, I think maybe I'm not a fan of the Zoo concert format. Kids were pretty much climbing all over me and all around me and parents were letting them. It seemed most people were there to see Los Lobos and didn't care too much about Ladysmith Black Mambazo as they were talking throughout...again, maybe I'm not a fan of this format. A few of Ladysmith Black Mambazo's songs went on too long, much longer than album versions, but for the most part they are great to see. They clearly love performing and it is liberating to enjoy their show.

    Ladysmith Black Mambazo are amazing

    by oneclog40 on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

The angelic harmonies combined with thoughtful introductions and explanations of each song made this concert experience a sublime experience. The dances they do during the songs seem to both add flourish to the music and help illustrate the lyrics. This is not a 'get up and dance to the beat' group, for the most part, although some of the songs were very upbeat and rhythmic; but they are simply wonderful to listen to and experience. I highly recommend anyone of any age or background to come and hear these beautiful guys.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo sets were a bit long

    by Tessie2009 on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

This group is amazing in the way they harmonize and I do enjoy the music of Africa. To my ears the music became monotonous each song could have been a little shorter. I would have enjoyed more variety slow music, faster music etc. I would not go see this show again as a headliner unless the second bill is Los Lobos and then I would arrive late if Los Lobos takes stage second as they did last night.

Great on harmony but deadingly repetitive

by JRinPortland on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

Maybe I'm getting old but about 1/2 hour into the concert, I was thinking, "Another 2 hours of this? Why didn't I bring a book?". The style is inherently repetitive with the same musical phrase being sung for an entire 5 minute song while various members of the group take turns jumping up in the air with different mannerisms. Content-wise; they're an anachronism. Yes, I got the message about the 'long walk to freedom' in South Africa. But that was how many years ago? Move on! (or retire.) The best part... the concert was only about an hour long, with Los Lobos for a (longer) second act.

    Ladysmith Black Mambazo

    by KC110147 on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

Sort of a different type of event. First of all, they were the headliners, yet they performed before Los Lobos. While I liked their music it seemed to be the same type of song over and over again.

    Ladysmith Black Mambazo

by lamda on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

Haunting music that brings another world into view. The voices are rich and mesmerizing. I do wish there was a reader board of some sort that displayed the words and interpretation. I suspect some of their antics would have added even more depth to the performance with a better understanding of the story they were telling.

    Ladysmith enchants

    by naynay27 on 7/18/09Oregon Zoo - Portland

It was a magical evening. Previous obligations meant we had to come a half hour before start time, so our seats weren't pristine. It was an outdoor, spread-your-blanket-where-you-can concert, but any space was perfect in the presence of such a treasure. Unfortunately Ladysmith Black Mambazo was the opener. I say unfortunately because they only played an hour, and we could have listened to them all night. Their flawless harmonies and enchanting rhythms made it an unforgettable evening.
