Firestone CC is beautiful
by dhou on 8/5/12Firestone Country Club - AkronRating: 3 out of 5I have played golf for over 50 years and love the sport . I played Firestone CC ,so I knew the course.. The professional golfers are truly gifted and worth going to see...one time. I went on Thursday figuring the crowds would be smaller...they weren't that small. The weather was perfect and I spent the entire day on the course walking with players and the atmospher was neet to enjoy. Consessions were excellent , the best I have ever seen & prices were reasonable ($6 for hot dog, pop & chips). However , I doubt I will return for the following reasons. #1 There was no way to know how the player you were watching stood relative to the overall field. Scoreboards are always far away and they are all electronic scrolling scoreboards . The old scoreboards were less flashy but more informative. They need a lot more of them. #2 The hand held scores poles for each group were very hard to find in a crowd & therefore mostly worthless. Those carrying the poles layed them on the ground and sat down while the players were on the green so you couldn't see scores. Therefore, patrons were always in the dark on scores or how the indivigual player stood relative to the field. Everyone I talked to was always guessing how the player stood...noone knew. #3 Often , I was right next to the green but could not see the ball or cup and would not have known what happend except for crowd reaction. #4 Because of huge following I saw Tiger Woods only once from 40 yards away. (Bring binoculars). After that I spend time enjoying other players who were easier to get closer to see. #5 Jim Furick was not even listed on my program as a player with a starting tee time. Yet, when I got home I was shocked to find out he was the leader of the event & I never saw his name once on the rotating electronic scoreboard. Like I said scoring & a players standing relative to the field is very bad. #5 Viewing golf is always going to be difficult for spectators because of a large playing area however enjoyment can be a lot better if the PGA resolved the above issues.
II knew golf was not a spectator viewing friendly sport but I thought it would be better than this. It is a ton of walking to see anything for less than a minute. I think the PGA needs to focus some attention on being more spectator friendly with emphasis on scoring & viewing improvement.
