  • Second City ETC - Hilarious

    by DMS111 on 11/6/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We Are All In This Room Together was hilarious. The lengthy show provided plenty of laughs and some great lines to remember for later. There were topical moments as well as other great setups. The highlights included the multiple audience participation skits, where the performers needed to generate funny comments on the spot. Well done !

The play is read right from the book which I found to be much more enjoyable. So, there was nothing new for me. If I didn't read the book, then maybe I would have appreciated the acting more. Therefore, if you read the book, I wouldn't recommend going to see the play, save your money.

A very intriguing play. Kept you thinking and a good discussion followed the production.

Thought provoking and enjoyable. Great production and wonderful acting -- Nussbaum (Freud) is just amazing.

Didn't enjoy play. Way too long. Boring. Not worth the money.

Great time. Went for my boyfriends birthday, he enjoyed it and so did I. Would see again.

  • Long live rock and roll!

by Berthajoy on 11/3/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Lieber and Stoller's music sizzles with an enthusiastic and talented cast of 11 young people. This show is nothing but fun!

  • Very clever

by Sycophant on 11/3/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

A fun evening of illusions and card tricks by two accomplished and entertaining prestidigitators, along with a bit of history about the "Chicago" style of magic. And members of the audience got to take part in some tricks (don't worry - as far as I'm aware you won't be sawed in half or levitated). Highly recommended by...moi.

  • Clever, but no longer groundbreaking.

On rereading this review before sending it, I realize that it sounds much more mixed than I intended --- THIS IS A VERY ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT. "METAMORPHOSES" made quite a stir when it was first stages 15 years ago. If you never saw it before, it is well worth your time. Unfortunately, since style is more important in this production than content and this manner of presentation has been copied and/or surpassed many times in other productions the results are not as engaging as they were. (The use of a pool of water was used to much greater theatrical effect several seasons ago at Chicago Shakespeare's "TWELFTH NIGHT", directed by Josie Rourke.) (Also, I have never been the strongest supporter of "story theatre" adaptations of literary works that have multiplied from Frank Galati's classes at Northwestern University.) But, be that said, the current Lookingglass production is mounted with care and affection and the performers are fine. The Lookingglass space is a beautiful, inviting location --- always a pleasure to visit.

  • Smokey Joe's - An Unforgettable Experience!

by NewTheatreUbiqueFan on 11/1/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I took my mother with me to the show as my husband had to travel unexpectedly for work. We were both surprised by the intimacy of the venue, such a small stage and Theatre! I was more familiar with the Chicago theatre scene, but I could tell my Mom was braced for a sub-par performance effort. From the first song the show BLEW US AWAY! Even myself, who based on critical reviews was expecting great things, was astonished at the talent Theo Ubique assembled for this show, under the direction of Brenda Didier. Perhaps most enjoyable was the absolute performance factor of every actor and musician. Small venues can often be intimidating for inexperienced actors, after all, you are performing and singing staring into people's eyeballs from two feet away at times. However, instead of turning inward to their performance, the stars on Theo Ubique's stage engaged with the audience, grinning at us through their solos, winking at my Mom in the steamy parts, and treating us like their oldest friends throughout. A special shout out to piano player extraordinaire JEREMY RAMEY and his incredible music direction of the show. He struck up a conversation with us from his piano stool a few feet away from our table, and proceeded with the evening like we were his specially invited guests. And our close up view as he proceeded to play some of the best piano I have ever seen live was a special privilege of the evening. At dinner the next evening we were still raving about the show - to our waitress, to the people at the table next to us,and in general to anyone who would listen. Smokey Joe's is a MUST SEE event and Theo Ubique is a venue where season tickets are a BRILLIANT idea!

  • Really fun and out of the box

by MelMul on 10/31/12Annoyance Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This show was so great. I am a soccer mom from the burbs with 3 kids aged 8-11. I have been wanting to get out of our suburban box and found this show online. When we got to the theatre I thought I made a mistake because you have to wait for the show in a bar. Although the bar was small and quaint I couldn't help thinking that we were the only family there and it still was a bar. But then we were let into the back where the stage was. It was small and intamite. My kids were uncomfortable because they have only been to big venues but then the show started. It was funny and very appropriate for my kids. A lot of sarcasim but my kids followed the story line. We laughed all the way home! We are definetly going back!

When the play was over I turned to my husband and said " I want to get the DVD". The play was thought provoking, funny, and challenging. I highly recommend the play.

  • It should run longer.

I will see it again before the show closes. I was absorbed in it the entire time.

  • Boxing at Its Best

by Berthajoy on 10/29/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This was a play about two boxers, and takes place almost entirely within a boxing gym ring. The two amazing actors box, spar, and work out both verbally and physically throughout the play, and talk about being able to chew gum and walk at the same time.... Performances aside, the play itself is a tad predictable: young, cocky boxer vs. old and wizened mentor.

The play and cast were excellent! We and our friends loved it!

  • One Nation Under 1%

by dawalms on 10/28/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Very inconsistent. Some bits were funny, others were not. Some dragged out too long. don't know if it was the writing, actors or both. The women were excellent. I expected to laugh all night, but there were a few chuckles here and there. I will not go and see Second City for a very long time. Maybe the main Second City is better than the off shoots. I'd prefer a one man or woman stand up comedian for the money. My friend thought the same thing.

Amazingly talented musicians! Orbert Davis's adaptations of classical to jazz is great.
