  • Advant Guard Performance Art

    by SSSB101 on 12/11/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The Looking Glass theater (stunning local by the way) has extended the run of Metamorphoses the play which made me lucky enough to score a seat. This intimate theater doesn't have a bad seat. The play was sewn together snippets of love stories, love adn loss, desperation for love, romantic love, heart break of love lost, and ever lasting love. It is a tribute to the actors. This very easily could have fallen into camp, but they raised the material with their performances. There was some (unnecessary) male nudity about 2/3 the way through. An older woman in the audience gasped which actually made a few of us giggle. His nudity didn't advance the story, but he had impressive abs. All in all, it was a unique experience. The women around me wore fur and spoke no english so I felt I wasparticipating in underground theater in Germany or something. That added to the experience. The show may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. Just a note the front row gets towels because there is a great deal of splish splash in the water that is the stage.

  • Delightful afternoon

Don't miss You Never Can Tell, a Shaw play I had seen many years ago but forgotten how wonderful it was, until Remy Bumppo produced it this season as part of their theme about parents and children. The children in this play are a handful! The adults need help as well. Fortunately Dale Benson as the waiter advises them in his doddering way, stealing many scenes in the process.

  • Hubbard Street Dance can do no wrong

by iheartinterpol on 12/10/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The dancers of HSD are so incredibly beautiful and expressive. They performed: Untouched, Blanco, Pacopepepluto, and Casi-Casa. A big bonus - they music for all 4 pieces were incredible!

  • Recommended!

I purchased these tickets feeling how could this not be great. They were bought as a birthday event to enjoy before dinner. It started a little slow and we were unsure if the show would be worth it, then it "sucked you in". This show was very entertaining and enjoyable. It will not disappoint! J&L

  • Very Enjoyable!

    by JonK0912 on 12/10/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Very well done and very enjoyable show. Would definitely recommend for those that are big fans of the movie like myself! The cast was great and did a wonderful job with all of the characters. There is not much to it, pretty basic production and straight forward so don't expect to be blown away but it was very enjoyable nonetheless. The sound effects guy was awesome!

  • The Odd Couple

by geniusoftheworld on 12/10/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What a pleasure! Simon of course is a master and the entire cast are world class as well. Like watching the Bulls in their championship years- script, direction, performances, as good as it gets.

  • Great time

by Battlesnakes on 12/9/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The assemblers was a great time - everyone onstage was clearly really enjoying themselves and there were a lot of hilarious improvised moments that even made the people onstage laugh sometimes. I do recommend this for people that are at least somewhat familiar with superheroes and comic book characters (batman, wonder woman, thor, etc.) because there are some references that you might not get otherwise, but for the most part it's still funny even not knowing those references and there are also many scenes about made up superheroes so everyone can enjoy. I highly recommend it - not to mention the new ph space is great too!

  • Missed opportunty to see it more times

by Buddyzilla on 12/4/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Not going until the closing night was a big mistake. The singers were full of voice and the choreography was stunning for such a small venue. Costuming was beautiful and the changes were seamless, especially in the second half. We both were disappointed that we had not gone ealier so we could go again. Being in our 60's the songs were quite familiar to us and fun to relive. The No Exit Cafe is an interesting place with the actors waiting tables, the mix between the regular staff and the actors had us wondering just who was who...first time confusion on our part.

  • A colorful, well choreographed, entertaining show!

by CriticSUZ on 12/3/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Pippin in itself is a quirky show, not always appreciated. The show at Circle Theatre has added a Bollywood twist. This made the show much more colorful, beautiful costumes and entertaining, such great choreography! The Bollywood style does not always mesh with the story line, but that aside this has given Pippin some pizazz. Bollywood is the "hot thing" right now and its nice to see this show in a more contemporary light. The cast is very talented, and with a very small band, many of the songs had more of an acapella sound to them. Christopher Logan as the Lead Player is mesmerizing! We applaud the theatre for bringing a taste of this style to us!

  • Camp-tastic Delight! 3 Stars for 3 Liza's!

    by SSSB101 on 12/3/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

What a fun Saturday Night! The Steppenwolf Garage has a holiday delight stuffed in their stocking with We Three Liza's. While not a perfect show, it supplied many a side splitting laugh. The show takes a bit to warm up, but comes alive when Liza "Ghost of Christmas Past" sashays onto stage with two sequin bootie short male dancers doing their best Fosse Dance moves. This Girl Stole the show! I fashed right back to one of Liza's many 70's specials (on DVD of course, I am not THAT old). She was a treasure! The second Liza may be in drag, but was nothing but. His one liners were hysterical. Now, I thoguht the more you know about Liza herself the better the show so a casual fan might not quite get it, but i had fun. The thried "Liza" was recently seen in Xanadu and while he may be black, he stole every scene he was in. We Three Liza's comes to Life when the Liza's are on stage. The rest felt a bit filler.......

  • Wonderful performance of A Christmas Carol!

by SWJSLD on 12/3/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the performance. The actors were great and the theater was intimate and lovely.

  • Well acted, startling production of rare Shaw

by gafgaf on 12/2/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

One does not get to see You Never Can Tell often. It is not part of the Shavian canon, but this production makes a good case for it. Not as intellectual or discursive as some of Shaw's plays, it is full of life and gaiety. It is a love-child of Shaw and Oscar Wilde (it does not have the brilliance of the Importance of Being Earnest - but what does?). The acting is superb and quite charming with William the waiter stealing the show, although most other actors have their moments. The production was one of the best ensemble comedies I have seen in Chicago for some time.

A must for all to see! Acting was fantastic, and I walked away with a smile on my face . I couldn't stop talking about how good it was!

  • much better in 2002,2003

by AJjf on 12/1/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

loved it the previous 2 times court did it. the changes made were all detrimental .why change what worked? we sat in the last row and could not understand 10% of the dialog.also, poor sightlines. the moving ending now fell flat,in part due to the weakness of the lead actor who became unintelligible. fine show in past, not worth seeing now.

family friendly. good xmas feel good play. very well done

  • Raw and powerful

by Crazyboutpatsy on 11/27/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Wasteland was gripping, but very raw and gritty. The acting was superb. The psychological journey of the on-stage character and the powerful portrayal of a chacacter who never appears on stage were both very intense. The language is very raw - fitting to the situation and era, but raw, nevertheless. I was not quite prepared for the one total nude scene, although it fit in the story. This is the story of a moment in history that is difficult to look at and relive, but they did an excellent job.

  • Woman in War conflict deserve community

    by stillactingup11 on 11/27/12HOTTIX - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This was an outstanding performance with a tightly knit ensemble group. The play shows how important "community" can be in holding the secret of PTSD and witnessing same.. It is hard to share survivor experiences. This play gives permission to share war secrets and perhaps move on.
