About

Hello, Dolly! on Tour

One of Broadway's most beloved musicals was reborn in 2017, when producer Scott Rudin and director Jerry Zaks brought back the irresistibly meddlesome widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in the form of Bette Midler. Winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical, their colorful new Hello, Dolly! hit the road in 2018 with Tony Award–winning Betty Buckley in the brassy title role.

The Dolly saga extends nearly two centuries into the past, when John Oxenford's 1835 play A Day Well Spent was adapted by Johann Nestroy into the farce He Will Go on a Spree or He'll Have Himself a Good Time. Thornton Wilder subsequently transformed it into a hit 1955 comedy, The Matchmaker, with Ruth Gordon as Dolly Levi. Producer David Merrick thought Wilder's play would make a great musical, and he was correct.

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, Dolly originally was written for Ethel Merman, who declined the role. Carol Channing stepped in to star in the original 1964 production, which was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. Known as both Dolly, A Damned Exasperating Woman and Call on Dolly before it reached Broadway, the show's title was changed due to the popularity of Louis Armstrong's iconic version of "Hello, Dolly," which dislodged the Beatles from the top of Billboard's singles chart.

With Channing in charge, Hello, Dolly! won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical. Dolly has always been a star vehicle, and Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (leading an all-black cast), Phyllis Diller, and, finally, Ethel Merman all played the musical meddler after Channing stepped down in 1965. Hello, Dolly! closed in 1970 after 2,844 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway show to date.

Identical to the Broadway version down to its Currier and Ives pastel set and high-stepping Gay Nineties dance moves, the Hello, Dolly! touring production offers a visual feast to accompany Jerry Herman's pop-perfect songs. Anyone enjoying Dolly today should take pride in being part of this timeless show's long, rich pedigree.

    Exceeded my Expectations

by Pete from Michigan on 12/3/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

To be honest, I was not thrilled when offered the opportunity to see Hello Dolly. My 84 year old Mom wanted to see it so I agreed solely to please her. I had in my head a picture of a stale, super corny play that you needed to be at least 80 plus years old to actually enjoy. I anticipated bus loads of wheelchair bound seniors pulling IV units into the theater. Boy was I wrong. I absolutely loved the music. Hello Dolly was fun and funny from beginning to end. I was totally blown away. (Nothing but love for the wheelchair bound seniors and for the record, I didn't see any IV units at all.)

    Wonderful for three generations!

by Lisa on 12/3/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

My 73 year old mom, myself at 52 and my 13 year old daughter LOVED the performance. Honestly, we were just taking grandma as a gift and ended up having a great time ourselves! Granted my 13 year old is a theater kid so that may have impacted her level of interest. The set was amazing and every actor was so multi-talented. Ms. Dolly was outstanding, one person just can't have that much talent.

Great show. Unfortunately, we arrived late due to an accident on i96. The staff was very helpful getting our tickets and to our seats. The performance was as good as any Broadway show. The theater was excellent with very good visibility and audio. We could see and hear everything and enjoyed every minute of it.

    Obnoxious Theater Goers

    by M. on 11/27/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

The play was wonderful but the people behind us made it impossible to hear or concentrate. The play was funny but they laughed at every line very loudly and in our ears- we had to put on ear plugs and it still didn't help. We were complaining at intermission and when the gentleman came back his wife expressed our complaint and he continued to laugh and clap even louder. We left the theater as the play was ending because we knew he would clap and scream loudly and our ears were hurting, A nice experience was ruined by people who have no concern for others except themselves.

Great performance. Excellent dancing and production. Lead actress was a wonderful actor, but her voice is not always pleasant or on key. Venue was great, close parking. I was not clear that my ticket included parking.

by Sally on 11/26/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

We could sing along with most of the songs and the music was excellent. The energy of the dancers was incredible. The Dolly character was enchanting- so comfortable in her roll and what pipes when she belted out her songs!. My husband and I totally enjoyed being present at the awesome Fisher Theater watching the musical ‘Hello Dolly’.
