About

Hello, Dolly! on Tour

One of Broadway's most beloved musicals was reborn in 2017, when producer Scott Rudin and director Jerry Zaks brought back the irresistibly meddlesome widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in the form of Bette Midler. Winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical, their colorful new Hello, Dolly! hit the road in 2018 with Tony Award–winning Betty Buckley in the brassy title role.

The Dolly saga extends nearly two centuries into the past, when John Oxenford's 1835 play A Day Well Spent was adapted by Johann Nestroy into the farce He Will Go on a Spree or He'll Have Himself a Good Time. Thornton Wilder subsequently transformed it into a hit 1955 comedy, The Matchmaker, with Ruth Gordon as Dolly Levi. Producer David Merrick thought Wilder's play would make a great musical, and he was correct.

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, Dolly originally was written for Ethel Merman, who declined the role. Carol Channing stepped in to star in the original 1964 production, which was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. Known as both Dolly, A Damned Exasperating Woman and Call on Dolly before it reached Broadway, the show's title was changed due to the popularity of Louis Armstrong's iconic version of "Hello, Dolly," which dislodged the Beatles from the top of Billboard's singles chart.

With Channing in charge, Hello, Dolly! won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical. Dolly has always been a star vehicle, and Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (leading an all-black cast), Phyllis Diller, and, finally, Ethel Merman all played the musical meddler after Channing stepped down in 1965. Hello, Dolly! closed in 1970 after 2,844 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway show to date.

Identical to the Broadway version down to its Currier and Ives pastel set and high-stepping Gay Nineties dance moves, the Hello, Dolly! touring production offers a visual feast to accompany Jerry Herman's pop-perfect songs. Anyone enjoying Dolly today should take pride in being part of this timeless show's long, rich pedigree.

    Nothing less than brilliant . . .

by Bill on 1/10/20Hobby Center - Houston

From the opening notes of the overture to the final curtain call, HELLO, DOLLY! was definitely one of the best productions we've seen. The sets were brilliantly done, the costumes were superb, and the actors had mastered their craft! The production moved so smoothly from one scene to another that it was hard to believe that any time had passed at all since the opening curtain. We definitely appreciated the characterizations: Dolly Levi was superb, as was Horace Vandergelder. The young lovers were artfully portrayed with just the right amount of shyness. I am so very glad that I was able to secure the tickets for opening night. My only regret is that my schedule does not allow for attending another performance before the show leaves Houston. Our theatre year has begun with a show which will be very, very difficult to surpass!

    Fun and Very Entertaining

by RanBell on 12/27/19The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

From the time the curtain went up till it came down the group of actors were very entertaining and fun. I had a smile on my face through out the performance. The singing was wonderful and the dancing spectacular! I would definitely go back to see this show again. I really like going to Orpheum Memphis for all kinds of shows. Great Place! For us it’s a 5-6 hour round trip not including the show. “Hello Dolly” is a show I’ve wanted to see for a long time and it was worth the time and money. A Great Live Performance! I’m always amazed at the actors abilities and their dancing. They always look like they are having fun and it makes me feel good. Thanks for a Great Night!!!

    Good show

by LG on 12/25/19The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Loved the movie with Streisand and saw the show 30 years ago with Carol Channing. It was a good production but I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I expected Carolee to have a better voice and kept comparing her voice to that of Streisand and Channing and of course she could not measure up. Second act was better than the first - enjoyed the set design and choreography, especially in the second act.

You go your way- as long as it’s to see this show!

by L. on 12/24/19The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

My husband and I have seen Hello, Dolly! more than 20 times between the two of us — including at the Orpheum with Carol Channing and with Michelle Lee (both tremendous, by the way!), but this was the best either of us has ever seen. From character interpretation to sets to sound balance, this performance was extraordinary! Ms. Carmello owned the role of Dolly Levi, and the supporting cast members fit theirs to a T. The curtain has come down, but the bar has been raised.

    Funny, touching, enjoyable family show.

by GodsCarGuy on 12/23/19The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

As a Christmas family outing, my wife and I took our 10 year old son and our 8 year old daughter to see Hello Dolly at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis. We have taken them to several Broadway shows over the years. From start to finish of Hello Dolly we were laughing and sitting on the edge of our seat waiting for the next turn of events as Dolly worked both the stage and the entire theater crowd! Other than a couple of curse words (which our kids brought to my attention) I would say it is a clean family show that all ages will enjoy.

by Juju on 12/21/19The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

I thought that this was one of the best performances I have seen at the Orpheum. Carolee Carmelo was outstanding and the ensemble dancers were good. I thought that the costumes and sets were much better than we sometimes see.

    by J. on 12/4/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Though the story might be a little dated, the show is still definitely worth seeing. The dance numbers, scenery, and costumes are absolutely fantastic. The cast was also top notch and exceptional, one of the best I have had the privilege of seeing.
