About

Hello, Dolly! on Tour

One of Broadway's most beloved musicals was reborn in 2017, when producer Scott Rudin and director Jerry Zaks brought back the irresistibly meddlesome widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in the form of Bette Midler. Winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical, their colorful new Hello, Dolly! hit the road in 2018 with Tony Award–winning Betty Buckley in the brassy title role.

The Dolly saga extends nearly two centuries into the past, when John Oxenford's 1835 play A Day Well Spent was adapted by Johann Nestroy into the farce He Will Go on a Spree or He'll Have Himself a Good Time. Thornton Wilder subsequently transformed it into a hit 1955 comedy, The Matchmaker, with Ruth Gordon as Dolly Levi. Producer David Merrick thought Wilder's play would make a great musical, and he was correct.

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, Dolly originally was written for Ethel Merman, who declined the role. Carol Channing stepped in to star in the original 1964 production, which was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. Known as both Dolly, A Damned Exasperating Woman and Call on Dolly before it reached Broadway, the show's title was changed due to the popularity of Louis Armstrong's iconic version of "Hello, Dolly," which dislodged the Beatles from the top of Billboard's singles chart.

With Channing in charge, Hello, Dolly! won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical. Dolly has always been a star vehicle, and Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (leading an all-black cast), Phyllis Diller, and, finally, Ethel Merman all played the musical meddler after Channing stepped down in 1965. Hello, Dolly! closed in 1970 after 2,844 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway show to date.

Identical to the Broadway version down to its Currier and Ives pastel set and high-stepping Gay Nineties dance moves, the Hello, Dolly! touring production offers a visual feast to accompany Jerry Herman's pop-perfect songs. Anyone enjoying Dolly today should take pride in being part of this timeless show's long, rich pedigree.

    Back where she belongs!

    by Frank on 11/25/19

HELLO DOLLY in Hartford was pretty incredible. Carolee Carmello as Dolly was nothing short off spectacular, bringing her own flare to this iconic role. I saw Bette in NYC and she was Bette...but Ms Carmello brought a new dimension to Dolly, in her performance. The entire cast was pretty spectacular! The dancing, costumes, sets were all old school musical with BIG production numbers with a TRAIN traveling across the stage. If I had one criticism, it is for the audience. People..stay in your seats until after the curtain call. The people on stage just sang and danced their hearts out for you, the least you can do is show them you appreciated it, by staying and applauding during the curtain call. All the performers see when the curtain comes up for the curtain call is the back of your heads as you are racing out of the theater to get to your cars..STOP IT and show some respect! It is as if you are talking with your friends and decide to leave in the middle of a conversation..RUDE! If you get a chance to see this show, GO you will not be disappointed, and for God's sake stay until after the curtain call.

    Hello Dolly

by PJZ on 11/25/19Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Fabulous show! Cast was excellent. Theater is beautiful. If the show runs late make sure you don't use the skywalk. The door leading to the parking structure automatically locked at 11:00 pm which meant we had to turn around go back downstairs and walk outside to the parking structure. Fine for us but if you have someone that cannot walk far it would not have been a good experience. Show was great though and the venue is very nice!

    Hello Dolly in Tucson

    by J. C. on 10/30/19Centennial Hall - Tucson

The singing, the dancing, the acting were great! Such an uplifting and high energy performance. The men's voices were terrific, however, the women were hard to understand. They spoke with up speak, too quickly and in an annoyingly high pitched voice. It was very difficult to follow the plot because of it.

    Hello Dolly in Centennial Hall

by Tucson Denise on 10/29/19Centennial Hall - Tucson

Security inspection didn't take long at all. Friendly ushers helped us find our section in the mezzanine, which was a good choice to see all the action. Seats were comfortable and sound was good due to the upgrade of speaker system several years ago. Orchestra was excellent - crisp, right on! Singers were all very good, costumes were excellent. The timing was too slow in a couple places, with the comedic effect lost, such as when we (and the rest of the cast) watch Dolly eat her dinner. Otherwise would have been a 5 star rating.

    OK...maybe

    by R. D. on 10/28/19Centennial Hall - Tucson

Well...part of the issue might be the 8pm start time which was not 'on time.' Also, if you are not a 'musical lover' this might be another issue. It was ok at best. The music was ok at times. Probably a more popular show for the senior crowd... Sorry 😴

    I made the right choice

by TwoEs on 10/27/19Centennial Hall - Tucson

I went to Hello Dolly by myself, and I loved every minute of it. I have been so busy and stressed this month, but this show reminded me why people fall in love with musical theater. It’s exciting and beautiful and energetic and colorful and seems like magic even though it’s in the real world. I went to the show wondering why I’d crammed yet another thing into my busy schedule, and I left the show feeling like I’d done my soul a great service. I made the right choice.

    Fabulous Revival

    by P. B. on 10/27/19Centennial Hall - Tucson

Hello Dolly was a great revival of the classic musical. The gravelly voice of the late Carol Channing is all that was missing. Dancing and chorus were terrific. Very enjoyable. The uncomfortable seating at Centennial precluded 5 stars.
