About

Hello, Dolly! on Tour

One of Broadway's most beloved musicals was reborn in 2017, when producer Scott Rudin and director Jerry Zaks brought back the irresistibly meddlesome widow Dolly Gallagher Levi in the form of Bette Midler. Winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical, their colorful new Hello, Dolly! hit the road in 2018 with Tony Award–winning Betty Buckley in the brassy title role.

The Dolly saga extends nearly two centuries into the past, when John Oxenford's 1835 play A Day Well Spent was adapted by Johann Nestroy into the farce He Will Go on a Spree or He'll Have Himself a Good Time. Thornton Wilder subsequently transformed it into a hit 1955 comedy, The Matchmaker, with Ruth Gordon as Dolly Levi. Producer David Merrick thought Wilder's play would make a great musical, and he was correct.

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, Dolly originally was written for Ethel Merman, who declined the role. Carol Channing stepped in to star in the original 1964 production, which was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion. Known as both Dolly, A Damned Exasperating Woman and Call on Dolly before it reached Broadway, the show's title was changed due to the popularity of Louis Armstrong's iconic version of "Hello, Dolly," which dislodged the Beatles from the top of Billboard's singles chart.

With Channing in charge, Hello, Dolly! won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Musical. Dolly has always been a star vehicle, and Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (leading an all-black cast), Phyllis Diller, and, finally, Ethel Merman all played the musical meddler after Channing stepped down in 1965. Hello, Dolly! closed in 1970 after 2,844 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway show to date.

Identical to the Broadway version down to its Currier and Ives pastel set and high-stepping Gay Nineties dance moves, the Hello, Dolly! touring production offers a visual feast to accompany Jerry Herman's pop-perfect songs. Anyone enjoying Dolly today should take pride in being part of this timeless show's long, rich pedigree.

    Good Entertainment

by bucklister on 1/18/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Good Entertainment with many talented performers. Buckley is not Carol Channing but gives a good performance. The story is timeless and the costumes for this presentation are some of the best ever seen with this story. The staging is exceptional especially the horse and carriage. The Civic Theater is not exceptional. The sound reproduction for seating away from the center is less than good and makes understanding the dialogue garbled.

    A Well-Cast, Gorgeously Produced Production

by rstephenb on 1/16/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

Let me get this out of the way first, I am a huge fan of Betty Buckley. I have seen her in concert and was transformed by her musical interpretation, subtext, arrangements and delivery. A superb artist and one of Broadway's icons (an overused word that happens to fit in this case). There may be some who question whether she has the right chops, style, presence and comedic abilities to step into a role bigger-than-life stars like Carol Channing and Better Midler took on. Is she like those ladies? Not at all. But she brings a sincerity, insight, emotional connection and in-character joy to the show. She doesn't camp it up, break with the character or otherwise do schtick. She just plays the role as written, with her own incredible impact, nuance and professionalism one would expect of her showbiz royalty status. The rest of the supporting cast was simply exceptional and among the very best I've seen in a touring production. They aimed high in casting and it shows. The sets, costumes, lighting and sound (less so) were top-notch, as was the orchestra (marvelous, really). My 30'ish niece was charmed by the show which she had not heard of or had seen previously. Another generation smitten by Jerry Herman. Score! See it if you can. It's about as enjoyable 2-3 hours of Broadway calibre theatre as you're likely to ever see.

    Hello Dolly storms Tempe

by NPHXGUY on 1/15/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

The show was utter perfection. One of the best shows I've seen in years. From the sets, costumes, pit orchestra, superior casting who could possibly ask for more. Well Betty Buckley provided more. I love to see legends that can sing, dance, act, and appreciate their moments on stage. She was perfect for the role, and touched my heart when she sang Before the Parade Passes by and a tear or two appear on her face. Amazing, simply amazing, that wasn't schmaltz but plain old gratitude and memories flooding through her mind as she mesmorized us with her version. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!

    Hello Dolly (Touring ASU Gammage)

    by K. H. on 1/14/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

What a WONDERFUL interpretation of an already historically perfect stage play. Betty Buckley is the CATS meow as Dolly Levi; she is a queen of nuance, posture and gesture and to not include this along with her nickname as "The Voice of Broadway" is selling her short. Meanwhile the entire cast is a gifted & energetic song & dance ensemble that entirely delights!

    Fun night out

by Rvers on 1/12/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

Singing, costumes and the ensemble were excellent. We had seats up in the balcony, but it was steep enough that heads in front of you was not a problem. Lots of construction, we arrived early and walked downtown for dinner. After the fact, we are usher we had prepaid for parking. We used to be able to park for free if we arrived early.
