About

Goo Goo Dolls, a band that rose from the punk scene in Buffalo, New York, penned several of the most definitive hits of the ’90s. Forming in 1985, the Goo Goo Dolls experimented with hard rock before landing on a winning formula that incorporated elements of acoustic and alternative rock for 1995’s A Boy Named Goo. The album yielded the band’s first Billboard 200 chart placement at No. 27 and its unlikely third single “Name” climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1998, the band vaulted to global ubiquity with “Iris,” a ballad written for the City of Angels soundtrack that later ushered in their quintuple-platinum sixth album Dizzy up the Girl. The song remained atop the former Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for 18 weeks, a record that stood until 2020. The Goo Goo Dolls solidified their stratospheric success with the equally catchy follow-up single “Slide,” which hit No. 8 on the Hot 100 and was certified platinum itself. In 2002, Gutterflower earned the band their highest Billboard 200 peak at No. 4, while 2006’s Let Love In added more catalog highlights like “Better Days'' and a cover of Supertramp’s “Give a Little Bit.” Founding members Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac have toured extensively across the 2010s while maintaining a steady output of new projects, including 2019’s Miracle Pill and 2022’s self-produced Chaos in Bloom.

    I can now die happy!

by Anonymous on 1/13/10amazing - Detroit

Goo Goo Dolls is my all time favorite band, and to tell the truth I was scared that seeing them in concert would ruin my perception of them (like so many other band you see in concert). This was not the case at all, they are actually better live! Can't wait to go see them again.

    Goo Goo Great!

by margoo on 1/6/10Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

What more can I say but it was GREAT! Great, because it was a band that I've loved for years (which dates me) and was at a location that I never expected to be so awesome for a concert. Plus, it was on a perfect night for one to see their favorite band New Years Eve! You're so close to the band at Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel one feels like a part of the Goo Crew. It was definately a great place and excellent concert. Gelheads were good and they were loud (a band to check out). But, of course, can't forget to repeat how GREAT Johnny Rzeznik and the Goo's are!

Great stage show in an intimate venue. My first trip to the Sound Board at Motor City Casino was awesome. The Gelheads were a great band that rocked it out and then the Goo Goo Dolls exceeded expectations. Would like to have heard "Better Days".

    these guys never disappoint!

by nyloracv on 1/2/10Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Admittedly I am a Goo Goo Doll junkie, but every time I go it's like the first time! These guys play their hearts out, the passion they feel for the music is amazingly evident in every song, new untried ones as well as the old standbys. You would think after 20+ years they would get jaded but every song is fresh. While Johnny may feel the success of "Iris" has eclipsed his other work, I believe as do thousands of other fans that he is a gifted songwriter that has had the good fortune of having an overwhelming commercial hit as well as artistically crafted songs that play to the souls of all who hear them. I have been to a lot of shows and seen performers whose albums were so overworked that the live performances are disappointing. Goo Goo Dolls are not only fantastic on their albums but even better live!

    The Haves and Have-nots

by easygoindoc on 1/1/10Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

There is clearly something that a band learns as it gains maturity and confidence. There are many uncomfortable moments before that is obtained. The Goo Goo Dolls concert at the Motor City Casino clearly showed both of those points. First were the Gel Heads - a group made up of three really cute looking guys - Hey, my date said so! - and a really good drummer. But watching their lead singer trying to communicate with his audience was almost painful. Their music was also reflective of that - its chief quality was that it was loud. The worst aspect was that each song sounded the same as the one that preceded it. Hopefully, this band's best days are in front of them. On the other hand were Robbie and John, and their backup cast. I am sure that standing in front of a solid group of dedicated fans adds confidence to a band's performance. On the other hand, I don't think these guys need any such boost. They are so sound, so professional, so grounded that they could open in Siberia and never hesitate. When Johnny chats with his audience, you feel like he knows you - maybe he does, we have all been there so often, that when an audience member confesses that this is her first GGD concert, John asks, as he autographs her sign, "Well where the F** have you been these last 10 years?" All the old songs were there - we all sang along, even though John would sometimes cajol us, telling us we must be too tired to sing. And there were a couple new songs - the announcement that a new record(??) is coming this summer was greeted with great enthusiasm. The playlist was perfectly coordinated to create highs and lows. And at the end, you knew there was no need for an encore. The boys had laid it all on the floor in front of us. Another great performance, another appetizer for the next show.

    Best New Year's Eve Ever

by cadabeje on 1/1/10Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

The Goo Goo Dolls brought the house down. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to (and I have been to many). Johnny Rzeznik looked great and sounded even better, and he has some sweet guitars. It was my best New Year's Eve ever.

The concert was a little late getting started and I was a little agitated after already waiting for 3 hours for the show to start. But it was worth the wait. The band interacted with the crowd and Johnnie even stopped to sign an autograph.
