The story of Gary growing up tour
by StatenIslandSteve on 10/31/15Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5It really says something about an artist when they come right out and give you what you want. The instant gratification we have been trained to yearn for. Musicians specifically, prefer to hold on to their most famous tracks until the very end, usually walking off the stage for a few minutes, making you beg for it. The promise of the encore keeps us avid listeners standing in place until the wee hours, just hoping to catch that famous tune. A chance to go back in time. The artist that smacks you right in the face with the bass from the jump though, that shows more than just confidence. It shows mastery of the craft. That is what Gary Clark Jr. is bringing to the table on this current tour. ‘Bright Lights’ right out of the gate makes you realize that GCjr “aint messin ‘round” as one of his more famous songs specifically wales. Leaving the puns alone for a moment, the energy and magic that comes from Gary is the stuff of legends. There are no fancy light shows here. No backup singers or enormous screens with crazy graphics to distract you. That’s not what GCjr is serving for dinner. A blank stage with just his bandmates is what you get. Honestly, it’s all you really need. Gritty blues rock coming straight from the soul and exiting through one mans’ magical fingertips. The guitar is just an extension of his hands and as he strums on new jams like ‘Grinder’ and ‘The Healing’, the crowd can’t help but remain stunned. Air guitars seem to have been handed out at the entrance of Terminal 5 on this rainy night in NYC, as every Tom, Dick, and Gary try to replicate what they are witnessing. You may not know the names of each of these freshly minted songs, but you will by the end of the night. What separates Gary from his idols, those being Muddy Waters, Albert King, Stevey Ray Vaughn and Co. is his versatility. Watching him shred is worth the price of admission alone, but hearing him sing is the cherry that others just can’t top. Reminding me of a younger Curtis Mayfield, Gary is Superfly in the easiest possible way. ‘Our Love’ stamps him as an R&B artist in every possible way, from his soulful lyrics to his silky delivery. Off the Blak and Blu album he brought us ‘Please Come Home’ and now with this and ‘Church’, he takes us from the alter to the bedroom. Not many artists can take the journey through darkness, into the mud while ending up praying for it all to work out. All of this done through 2 albums of musical ingenuity and God-given talent. For those who want to dance, don’t worry, ‘ Shake’, ‘Cold Blooded’ and more will have you moving like you were jamming to Chuck Berry circa 1956. A true artist knows that the future is what creating music is all about. Sure, Gary is going to give you the hits from the past, and lord knows we want them. But even more, he leaves you yearning for the future. In an era in music where Cut and Paste seems to be the trend, Gary just Shreds and leaves everyone else to pick up the pieces. Long Live Rock!.
