About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Wonderful show!

by Shannan on 11/9/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 4 out of 5

I’ve seen Fiddler a few times in different areas of the country and this was right there with the best of them! The music was fantastic as was the set and costuming. Thoroughly enjoyed the show! The one star I didn’t give was because the people behind us (2 different people) came back after the intermission with bags of popcorn. It was the sound of hearing what sounded to be partial cellophane bags crinkling quite loudly during the rest of the show that interferes with my happiness. The people on both sides of us also commented on the walk out of the theater. The venue needs to maybe consider changing what they sell? Or how they package it? I know that might seem like a small thing but it did detract from the beautiful show I was enjoying.

  • Wonderful Production!

I saw Fiddler on the Roof years ago, and was eager to see some of the updates to the music, set and choreography. It was as powerful now as it was the first time I saw it. The touring cast was incredibly talented, and it was sobering but important to hear the dedication to the people of Ukraine as the show ended.

  • Classic and wonderful

I loved that there were classic Russian dance numbers in the show. The cast was great too, especially Tevye!

  • Perfect!

by Karenn on 11/8/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about it was awesome! The singing, the orchestra, the choreography, the acting, the set, the storyline and anything else I left out! The story pulls at your heart; we all go through much change during our lifetimes, but for some people the change is almost too much to bear. I am thankful that through those changes that God never changes or leaves us.

  • heartwarming experience

by Cindy J on 11/8/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

We absolutely loved it! From the start to the finish... the singing, the acting, the playfulness, the obvious camaraderie of the cast, to the sideshows during the set changes, it was funny, sad and mostly funny! Can you tell we really liked it? It also reminded me of something I forgot about; the terrible plight of the Jews at that time in history. I hope it's never forgotten!

  • Fiddler Didn't Disappoint!!! Go Sophie Manoloff!

by AtlantaJewels on 11/8/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

We drove from Atlanta to see the only Fiddler show in Chattanooga on Saturday. My daughter is a trumpet player and is currently attending college in Columbus, GA for Music Education. She was so incredibly excited to see her favorite trumpet player, Sophie Manoloff on the program. She actually thought it was a mistake! Sophie is phenomenal! The musical was absolutely wonderful!!! The actor who played Tevye in this performance was amazing! On that note, the entire cast was superb! We couldn't have been happier with the friendly staff at the auditorium. It was a real treat for both of us! We will be at the next Fiddler show for sure and be attending more musicals in Chattanooga.

  • BEST PLAY

by Stephanie on 11/8/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

It was one of the best plays I have ever seen. I haven't seen to many Broadway plays and this was at the top. If you haven't already seen it, please go and see it. It was wonderful. My dad has seen the play over 30 times in different places different ways, and he said this was by far his favorite.

  • It was so great!!!

  • Fiddler on the Roof!

by Mark on 11/8/22Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 4 out of 5

The play was nothing short of amazing! The only complaint, which has nothing to do with the production company is that the auditorium seats are very close together. Good thing we are short people, but we were uncomfortable. If you are tall, I don't know how you would sit and enjoy anything in this auditorium!
