Fiddler on the Roof on Tour
In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.
Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.
The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.
Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."
As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.
"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.
Loved the singing and dancing ...It was funny and sad and the sets were excellent !!! We are glad we came
Went with 16 YO daughter and husband…daughter had never seen before, we were all enthralled by the dancing, singing and overall performance. My girl wanted to see it again! Unfortunately, we went on the last showing at Tilles.
The actors were excellent. Enjoyed each one. Loved the music and the orchestra. Top notch
Fiddler on the Roof is a very special show to me. It was the first show I ever saw on Broadway, in 1968. Many years later, my son played Tevye in his high school’s production. The show on Sunday was excellent. The music is wonderful, the sets and lighting were perfect and the actors were terrific. Reading that several were Israelis made it even more special. The only thing we found confusing was the red jacket that Tevye wore at the start and at the ending. It just didn’t make sense. The Performance Center is a good venue for live shows. I hope to see more there!
It was certainly worth waiting for. I would see it again tonight if they were there. Papa was spectacular!!! The entire cast hit a home run!!!
The show was great. But the OC Performing Arts venue leaves a lot to be desired. There were far too many people getting up and leaving their seats- and returning - during the play. They weren’t required to wait until a scene change. No announcement was made before the show started about exits and photography (and staying in your seats). And the show started before many. MANY patrons were even seated.
We throughly enjoyed the show. The play was as timely as ever.
It was a very large cast and all were terrific. The singing and dancing was amazing. The venue was also very good. I would definitely see another performance at this venue.
A very good show . Forgot how sad it was though.
This show was very well done! The actors were very professional, and the orchestra was great! A must see for anyone who hasn't seen it before!
Wonderful production. Fantastic cast ! Loved the show.
The cast was great and the show was fun and very entertaining.
I loved this show! The performers and music was great!
The cast did a wonderful job. The music and dancing was amazing. We truly enjoyed it
Fiddler on the Roof (Tour) was absolutely fantastic. The singing, the dancing were exceptional.
We have seen many productions of Fiddler, on and off Broadway and none were better than this. Tevye was brilliant and the singing and acting abilities of the rest of the cast were outstanding. This was a highlight of my 75th birthday's November celebration. Thank you!
Comparable to Zero Mostel and Topol. A gem! My wife and I loved it.
The venue was beautiful and the hosts and staff were very professional. Love ❤️ the show and all the entertainment before the Fiddler on the roof began. Those students that sang were very talented.
OUTSTANDING SHOW. It was like watching a NY Broadway show close to home.
Cast was very good. Not excellent. Set was a disgrace to a professional show. Costumes reflected the economics of the characters but all brown? No color anywhere? Really?
