About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

Great musical that I have seen before but this touring company was far more talented and professional than other performances of Fiddler that I have seen.

The staff of the Fisher Theatre is most helpful. Visiting Detroit and getting around is easier than I had thought.and the city looks great. The performance was wonderful and memorable. Appreciated the reminders sent by the Fisher Theatre and Ticketmaster before the performance about what to expect and how to prepare. Hope to visit you all again soon. : )

Excellent touring company actors and orchestra! The staging and choreography was awesome.

  • Relevant story line especially recently with Ukraine

by Teresa on 10/19/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

I especially thought that the tailor's overall performance was superb! I have seen Fiddler approximately five times in various theater settings. I was somewhat unimpressed with the lead's overall performance and the bar scene dancing was a letdown compared to other performances I've attended.

  • No children allowed

by Craig on 10/19/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

The cast and performance was great. Kids in audience not so much. Three kids younger than 10 years old sitting behind us kicking our chairs, talking, and snorting phlegm.

  • Wonderful afternoon

by Nicki on 10/19/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Took my mom to the afternoon performance of Fiddler on the Roof. My father passed a few years back and this was one of the musicals he always talked about. The acting and singing voices were amazing. The humor of the lines were an added bonus! I was laughing and zoned in at all times. So glad I got to see this live with my mom! My father would have enjoyed it! All the actors were amazing in their performance!

Loved the tribute to those suffering in the Ukraine! Very moving!

  • Wonderful show! My grandkids were mesmerized start to finish

I've seen fiddler 10 times, including Zero Mostel and Topol. Johnathan Hashmonay can hang with them!

  • Very mediocre performance and production

by LM on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 2 out of 5

This is one of my favorite plays, saw it over a dozen times. This is the worst performance/production out of all of them, including a high school play. Tevye played by a very talented actor, but casting was questionable. Costumes were awful - time periods and countries mixed. Dedication to the people of Ukraine at the end was a very nice touch, but proof that production team knows nothing about history of this play.

  • Man on the house

by Karan on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Took my 6 year old granddaughter whose favorite movie is "Man on the House" her name for Fiddler on the Roof. It was a gift for her sixth birthday. She and we loved it. I performed this musical when I was in high school and it remains one of my favorites. We had a wonderful time and she was completely engaged and enthralled. The cast and orchestra was great. Looking forward to exposing her to more shows in the future.

  • Terrific show! Excellent dancing, music and voices

    by Jen'nPatti on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my granddaughter, who has never seen the show. She was absolutely mesmerized! The actor playing Tevye was outstanding, and the rest of the cast were equally talented. Fiddler is the first show I ever saw on Broadway, on my seventh birthday. Zero Mostel was appearing at that time, and the show literally changed my life! I went on to become an Equity Stage Manager, then later went to law school. I am now a practicing attorney who takes her grandchildren to as many shows as they will allow. The theater is a truly magical place, and this production did not disappoint.

  • Great!

by Nancy on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Fiddler on the Roof a number of times over the years. This production was nothing short of great! I highly recommend you see it! The characters were well cast and very good in their roles; the stage and scenes were very clever and creative and the crowd was enthralled, based on the standing ovations. It was its usual thought provoking story, that continues to speak to me even today. With the current Ukraine situation, it really shines a light on things that unfortunately have not changed that much for them over this last century. It is all so unbelievable and heartbreaking that similar injustices are still served, families and communities are destroyed and that such evil still exists today.

  • Marvelous cast!!

I really enjoyed this classic!! The roles were cast beautifully. Bravo to all!!

This was a fantastic show! Beautiful music and passionate performers!! Loved that they gave a message of support about the relevance of this story in today's Ukrainian conflict and did a tribute of support. Very moving and inspirational!

  • Awesome show, but Tevye was a little wooden

    by B on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Fiddler has always been one of my favorite musicals, so of course I went to see it. The show as a whole was great, as always. I'm nitpicking, as I've been involved in some theater myself, but the person playing Tevye, though an amazing singer, I felt was very stiff when it comes to acting. I get it, it's a hard role to play--not everyone can be Chaim Topol or Zero Mostel, but there's a certain charm and expression to the role that unfortunately he just didn't bring. The woman who played Golde was very monotonous. The sisters were amazing, and Yente was hysterical. I would definitely recommend it.

  • Excellent show

The show was excellent!! Definitely could tell that it was a Broadway cast! I'd see it again!

  • Bravo

    by St.Claire on 10/18/22Fisher Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

EXCELLENT CAST!!!! The singing and dancing were equivalent to the best of Broadway. Actor playing Tevye was equal to Topol, my favorite Tevye. Go see this show!!!!
