About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

    A magnificent Show.

by E C. on 1/8/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The whole cast were so professional, particularly the leading actors. Music and singing was so so good. All props were so fitting. Quite an emotional show and had tears for most of the show. Timing was so appropriate especially due to the present situation with Ukraine and Russia. I very much appreciated the acknowledgement the cast made of the situation at present in Ukraine and the fact that the monies received that evening and( it was a full full house) would go directly to the Ukrainian people’s. An excellent show.

    Amazing!

by Sandy on 1/7/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Other than the jubilee seats being packed in like sardines in old uncomfortable seats this production exceeded my expectations! I would go every night to watch this stellar group of actors and actresses but I couldn’t sit in those seats again! The seamless scene changes, believable acting, I felt like I was taken back in time and was part of the little town! Bravo to all!

    Awesome Performance

by Jrdrama on 1/6/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

As a former Fine Arts teacher it was a treat to once again experience a great performance with incredible energy. The Choreography was outstanding and the unity on stage rewarding. When a story is told well as in Fiddler the audience loses track of time and space and truly joins in on the experience. “A Father of 4 Girls” tells it all.

    rave reviews!!

by LaLa on 12/1/22Ocean City Performing Arts Center - Ocean City

Loved the show! The touring company was amazing and worth the wait, since the show was cancelled previously from the summer. One of the actors sang a little off-key, but it didn't ruin the experience. I'd see this again with this company.

by Omi on 11/29/22Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

The performance was fantastic and very appropriate for the turmoil in the world, especially the Ukraine. For me the end was very emotional since my family was driven out of their home and country during the Second World War

A journey to hear a timeless story about a journey.

by JW of Kosciusko on 11/29/22Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

In the mid-1970s, I was in the National Theater audience in Washington, DC, enthralled by Zero Mostel and talented cast mates for the nearly 3,000th performance; a memory that I continue to hold dear. Approaching my 71st year, I have enjoyed/endured many life experiences, sometimes looking to the heavens saying, "If only", "On the one hand, or on the other hand" and seeking to grasp a "tradition". I, with my new wife (thanks be to God), her 13-year-old granddaughter, and granddaughter's best friend drove 300 miles on a Saturday morning in order to view "Fiddler On The Roof" at the Robinson Center in Little Rock. Oh! Spot On! I thought for a moment that Tevye (Jonathan) might motion as though he were tossing a few slivers of cheese or goat's milk from a ladle in the direction of the audience. Ha! Such a blessing you were to me and to the three ladies; who had never witnessed the play or even knew the story! Thank you Jonathan, Maite, and all performers/musicians for your wonderful rendition. Thanks also for the thoughts/prayers in consideration of our fellow humans effected by the current Ukrainian crisis. Prayers lifted for your continuing success. L'chaim

    Best show

by JWard on 11/29/22Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

This was probably the best show I’ve seen on a tour. Every actor was perfect for their role.
