About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Awesome

From the beginning rendition of Tradition, through to the last scene of Anatevka, the performance was simply awesome. I watched the other actors, not in the spotlight, and they all performed as if they were the center of attention. Wonderful choreography! The bottle dance will always remain as my favorite. How do they do those leg kicks and not either lose their balance or drop the bottle is beyond me. I loved it!

Attended Fiddler On The Roof with my family Sunday afternoon and enjoyed an amazing performance. I was transported to another time and place through the rousing dance numbers and soulful singing. The comedic duologue kept the mood lighthearted in-spite of some of the darker realities of the plays theme. The curtain call with a message of hope for the current situation in Ukraine was well received and brought full circle the story of human suffering at the hands of totalitarians.

  • Would have been great if you could hear.

The show began on a low note, so low the speaker couldn't be heard and as the show progressed... the sound did not. The actors were fun to watch and beautiful voices were echoing throughout, but the words themselves escaped detection. I've been to a lot of shows at the Peabody, and spent a lot of money doing it, but without regret UNTIL this night. I probably hears less than 10% of what was said and sung.

  • A Great Production

by K8 on 4/25/22The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 5 out of 5

We have seen Fiddler on the Roof several times. Initially I was curious about the minimalist sets, but they worked well. The company was well rehearsed and the main characters were strong and relatable. The dedication at the end of the perforator the people of Ukraine was touching and appropriate. 10/10!

Felt endearing very much had a lesson to be learned about acceptance and the changing of traditional behavior in a community

  • Poor experience

by Norb on 4/25/22The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 1 out of 5

The performers were great! The sound system was horrible. We left at intermission, because the couple we were with couldn't follow along because of the piss-poor sound. Every time a performer faced the other direction, all was lost!! My wife and I have seen it so many times (it's her favorite) we could follow. We will NEVER go back to the Peabody.

  • FABULOUS!

by NSBeep on 4/25/22The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 5 out of 5

So professional, really enjoyed. Very timely in today's world. Nothing to do with the show, but the Peabody really needs to get a handle on the women's lack of enough stalls to go to restroom during intermission and not missing the show and constant interruptions for those who had to wait and come in late. They make really nice portable restrooms with sinks, a/c, heat, that perhaps Peabody could rent for special events. Just a thought. Was sorry to miss part of the show due to waiting.

  • Terrific show!

The cast was wonderful! Seats at this venue were a little tight, but really worth it! The show was very well done and I'd definitely recommend it :)

  • Some good, some bad

by Michele on 4/25/22The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 4 out of 5

Good show. I had side seats (4th row, in the middle on the left) and sound was terrible (near a fan and it was very difficult to hear a lot of the dialogue. Dancing and singing was wonderful. The actor who played Tevya was so-so. Didn't understand his wearing a newer jacket at the beginning and the end (except for them maybe trying to tie it in to today?). I didn't think he played the best Tevya I had seen (accent and dialogue were not what I am used to).

  • First time seeing Fiddler!

by Jess on 4/25/22The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show, fantastic cast. My first time seeing Fiddler and hopefully not my last!

  • Fabulous

by Art on 4/10/22Old National Events Plaza - EvansvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was a wonderful production. The actors and actresses were well crafted in the arts. The show itself was joyous and thought provoking. Funny and sad. The performers did a wonderful job expressing these and the music and singing was flawless. And though quite serious at times, the humor was well place. Me and my family had a wonderful experience.

  • Blocked view

    by S. S. on 4/9/22BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

Our experience was disappointing due to a rather large person sitting directly in front of us which blocked our view of center stage. We could see what was happening on the left and right sides of the stage. This ruined the performance for us!

  • Excellent!!

by AJ on 4/7/22BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show! The main character was amazing and did an outstanding job! This brought back many memories of seeing this show as a child growing up. Loved every bit of it.
