About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • For a touring company, pretty good.

by Theater dude on 5/4/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

This was our first time at the Hobby Center. We were highly impressed. For a touring company, the show was good. The choreography and our favorite music were the best parts of the show. As all of the performers are outfitted with body mics, they should be adjusted for the voices of the characters. We found that the sound was uneven. Weakest characters: Russian Soldier- Fyedka and Yenta the Matchmaker. Having seen the show many times before, Yehezkel Lazarov, as Tevye, was okay, but could not compare to Dudu Fisher, Hershel Bernardi, Zero Mostel and Topol.

I was impressed by the Hobby Center. It’s a beautiful theatre. Fiddler was excellent! I thought the whole production was done well. The actors, choreography, and set design was top notch. It was a delightful evening for my family and I.

  • Disappointing performance

by musiclover on 5/3/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 2 out of 5

We had wonderful center orchestra row seats for this show, one of our favorite musicals. It was our most disappointing trip to the theater in our lives. The voices were not Broadway quality, the choreography execution was sub-par, the company energy lack-luster, and the sound projection was poor. Overall not even close to being worth the ticket price. Could not possibly recommend this interpretation of this beloved musical.

  • Prophetic!

    by Reshiram52 on 5/3/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

The performances were great, the music was fantastic, catchy and at times haunting. Tradition and Sabbath Prayer were my favorite numbers. The fact that this musical still holds up is not really surprising. A must watch for the whole family

  • Disappointed

by Jules on 5/2/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

This was my sixth time to see Fiddler and I just did not believe this actor as Tevye. He spoke too fast and moved too quickly and seemed to be playing a character who was playing a character instead of simply "being" Tevye. However, that wasn't even the worst part. My attention was constantly drawn to people's phones lighting up during the production, including the girl sitting next to me who kept her text open the entire show and checked it every two minutes. Even when someone two or three rows ahead would open their phones it pulled my focus from the stage and was beyond annoying. When I spend $350 on two tickets to see a play I want to see the play and not your phone screen. If you have to check your phone for an emergency then get up and go into the lobby to do it because it is the height of hubris and bad manners to be so disrespectful of others in the audience.

  • Great show, great sound and acting

    by Rich A. on 5/1/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Easy in and out. Seats were further back than expected but it was fine. Need to either have a 3rd bartender or limit the choices for patrons.

  • A Night of Violin

by RJR on 5/1/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

The actors and actress’s were very talented. This story is very important for everyone to learn the value of traditions . Times change everything we have but if you can maintain family values the world would a much nicer to live in . This show was very well written and portrayed . Very enjoyable.

  • Great ... But stop requiring masks!

by Hank on 4/30/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

We loved the play! We were very frustrated that the production company is still requiring the audience to wear masks. Sad!

  • Great performances and relevant themes to our struggles

by Houston on 4/30/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Great performances by all the cast. The story of overcoming our traditions that hold us back from improving our relations with our family and the world around is inspiring and opens the door for healing in our divided world. Enjoyable to watch and joyful in its celebration of love overcoming fear in a changing world.

  • Very emotionally heartfelt

by MaryB on 4/29/22Hobby Center - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Fiddler three times and this by far exceeded all expectations! The characters were funny, dancing outstanding, and musical numbers superbly sung! In light of situation in Ukraine, that made Fiddler so much more meany!

  • Great Show

    by B. M. on 4/28/22Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. We saw it on Broadway several years ago and thought this was just as good. This time I was able to get first row seats.

  • Pretty good!

by Scubadadsr on 4/28/22Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 4 out of 5

The actor who played the role of Tevye was not our favorite. His voice and look just did not seem to be what we expected from past times we have seen the play. I also think that the theater needs to update their sound system, or something. At times it was very hard to hear what was being said. Having said that, many of the voices were outstanding and the play was well done overall.

  • Goosebumps!

by J. Matthew on 4/27/22Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 5 out of 5

Literally, the entire show, I had goosebumps. The emotions, the laughter, the music... everything was so amazing. And so relevant with what's happening in Ukraine; the lead even announced that all of their performances are dedicated to the people of Ukraine.

  • Much Fun

by Sweet T on 4/27/22Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 5 out of 5

The performance by both the actors and the orchestra was great. Sitting way up in the balcony, I missed some of the facial expressions that led to humorous spots. Also missed a few of the words, but overall very enjoyable. It was very cold in the balcony section which was a little distracting.

  • Loved the show!
