Fiddler on the Roof on Tour
In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.
Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.
The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.
Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."
As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.
"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.
Broadway in Bham is exactly right! Such a beautiful production and talented performers.
That was our first time for “Broadway in Birmingham “. It was awesome. I will get closer seats next time ! We also liked the parking and easy access to the concert hall. We live out of town so that’s important to feel safe !
Our group of 4 really enjoyed the show! The music and dancing were wonderful. We greatly appreciated the dedication to the people of the Ukraine by the cast.
I’ve wanted to see Fiddler on the Roof for years. Something always came up where I couldn’t. I watched the movie at age 22 after celebrating a huge Jewish wedding. My husband, now deceased, was Jewish. The play was amazing and highly entertaining. The cast were extremely talented. I enjoyed it immensely!!
Well done! Excellent choreography Performers need to speak lauder. Stage design excellent Costumes excellent Music EXCELLENT! Theater excellent! Ushers courteous/helpful!
This was the best live production of Fiddler I’ve ever seen. It was so amazing and cathartic. As a Jewish woman I felt so moved by the love put into this production by the cast and crew. I am so grateful to have been able to had this experience while I’m in college.
This was a wonderful evening out! The dancing was spectacular and I loved the moments of humor! With what is going on with the world now in Ukraine, it was surreal to see how the ending is playing out literally today. Was a beautiful glimpse into the traditional Jewish culture!
The sound system made it difficult to hear. BJCC needs to update their sound system so ALL seats can hear the productions. This play is always one of my favorites.
The music, the dancing, the story…everything was wonderful!!! A pleasure for the senses!!! Bravo!!! Standing Ovation!!!!
I was blown away by the performance of the Broadway touring group! Every dance step, every song was 110% effort! I recommend this production of Fiddler on the Roof to everyone!
My mom saw Fiddler when i was very young. She loved it and always talked about it. I was very excited to make my own memories of attending in person with my daughter! The troupe was magnificent and I could not be more pleased!
Dancing, singing and acting were all excellent! Venue was good, also. The only complaint was the speaker system was turned too low to easily hear the spoken words. And we missed some of the funny quips, because of someone coughing or eating a snack or a chair slightly squeaking or someone moving his feet, etc. - just "audience noises". A complaint was lodged with a manager at intermission and was told that it was supposed to be "quiet" and not louder - which resulted in many of us not hearing everything. The overall production was very good and very enjoyable.
Show was excellent! Cast was absolutely wonderful, couldn’t have been better!!!! Venue on the other hand, sold us expired cokes, and failed to direct traffic making departure terrible.
We were all very familiar with the movie, so at the beginning it was hard not hearing or seeing Topol. But we quickly realized that the man playing the lead has put his own spin on the character and after that, we applaud what he did with Tevye. We were all in tears because this IS history. This story is so relevant today considering all that is happening in Ukraine. Overall, this was a wonderful cast. The music was great and it was also entertaining.
Excellent performance!! We loved every minute. Performers were outstanding. Also loved the dedication at the end to the people in the Ukraine who are going through the same persecution.
We enjoyed a masterful performance of Fiddler on the Roof. We were particularly touched by Teyva’s tribute to the people of Ukraine.
Really excellent show. Great singing, great dancing, but most of all, great energy!
A great performance the BJCC. This was a fine staging of a classic musical
