About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • So-So Fiddler

by RetiredRay on 1/28/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I saw the first performance so the cast was still settling in. Some obvious line errors (like one sister calling another by her own name), and name pronounciation of some characters (particularly Golde) varied; and there were costume slips,; both of which problems will go away with repeated performances. Fierstein was a somewhat wooden Tevye, and the rest of the cast had not yet internalized their characters.

the whole show was very entertaining and we felt part of it even tho sitting high up in the balcony. tevye's mannerisms and expressions were priceless .the choreography was great and the songs as good as we have ever heard. the casting was spot on .definitely recommended!

We ended up leaving in the intermission! Harvey Fierstein's supposed famous raspy voice was more like a frog with a sore throat. It could have been tolerable with somewhat of a base tone, but there was no such thing. This was not a suitable role for him and who ever said it was must be crazy. We were disappointed and had wished we'd asked for our money back now.

The number of adjustments he had to make in his life was awe inspiring. He was such a wonderful man. The events chronicled in his life were remarkable.

We went and saw the Fiddler on the Roof last night, and it was wonderful. This is the second time a musical has opened on my wife's birthday and we were able to get opening day seats. Last night's performance was very interesting interpretation of the musical and I wish everyone could go and see it.

The cast was great, and very experienced. Harvey was OK...I thought he rushed his lines, and man, he can't sing very well

Bikel was an excellent Tevye. The whole cast and crew did a great job. The sets were excellent, the only downside were our seats on the first balcony, Couldn't see very well. Our next muscial will be on the main floor!

  • A Wonderful Evening!

by SRGJ on 1/20/10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Music was great - voices were wonderful. Can't believe Bikel will be 85 years old this May - he can sing and dance with the rest. Great set and characters were well played. Well timed humour.

  • Fidder is a classic!

Excellent performance. Lead character was especially good. Only complaint is access to Jubilee off 14 th street southbound - very poor.

Very strong start ... all actors performed well. Excellent humor. Second portion was a little dark, but historically accurate.

The musical Fiddler on the Roof was extremely well done. I would rate it as a "not to miss" opportunity. It was well paced and extremely well performed. I thought the singing and acting were superb.

  • Loved it

by vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv on 11/24/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

I, and my three friends, absolutely loved this show! It is THE show on this year's list, I really wanted to see... I had never seen it on stage, only in the movie version. I was not disappointed. I have seen all the other shows on the list, so this was a real treat. The performer who played Teyve was great. I was not too disappointed about not seeing Topol, I wanted to see the show. I am thrilled we got the understudy in Buffalo, as I read Harvey Fierstone will take over in Toronto. Having previous experience with his voice (or lack thereof) we lucked out. The other performers were great too. I hope Shea's will continue to bring in some older, great shows, as we have seen all the newer ones on Broadway

  • fiddler on the roof was great

by johnnyt250 on 11/24/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

i watch the movie several times ,it was like watching a live movie, but better, it was a great performance. my wife and i were a little disappointed that topal was unable to be there, but john preece did a great performance. this was my first time to shea's it was a beautiful theater, the only thing i didn't like was my leg room at my seat, i do realize this is a old theater. i was having bad leg cramps about two thirds of the way through the first part. i would come back to shea's to see an hour and a half show or shorter, but not for anything longer unless there was seating with better leg room. but over all a great perfomance and good exprence. thank you john

  • Excellent

Even though it was billed as Topol's farewell tour and he was unable to make the performances in Buffalo, this was still totally worth the price of admission. Very well done and just what I was expecting and more.
