Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Standing ovation for "Fiddler"

by Indiosmith on 1/31/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

"Fiddler" evokes of the laughter-through-tears experience at the core of the Jewish soul without self-pity. A clever and thought-provoking book illuminates the conflict Jews experience between their tradition and modernity -- a theme laid down at the outset and continued throughout. The songs are memorable and pleasantly evocative of the Jewish tradition, as is the fiddler on the roof himself -- a figure out of place and in some danger, yet undaunted. Harvey Fierstein may be an acquired taste for some; like Satchmo, his gravelly voice takes some getting used to. Fortunately, I acquired a taste for Harvey in the 1980s in "Torch Song Trilogy," and have been a steadfast fan ever since. "Fiddler" is the perfect vehicle for Harvey to display his loving and generous spirit without the 'Yiddish Mamma' schtick. If you go to the theater to laugh, to cry and to think, you will be amply rewarded by this "Fiddler," ably staged and acted -- as evidenced by the standing ovation by the packed house at the performance I attended.

  • Fiddler: Production Misses Topol

by ShowGoerAlso on 1/31/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

Fiddler is a wonderful musical and well worth seeing... BUT the voice of Harvey Fierstein's , as a recent replacement to that of Topol in the lead role, leaves much to be desired. His voice aptly described as a cross between "Darth Vader and Kermit the Frog" by a local newspaper and "gravel at the bottom of a cement mixer" by another critic detracted more than a little from the enjoyment of Tevye wonderful lyrics. You probably won't be as bothered if this is your first Fiddler outing but find this production far less enjoyable in comparison with predecessors in this pivotal role.

  • Fiddler on the Roof

by schuywalker on 1/30/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

This production has some wonderful moments. The orchestra plays well, the chorus is absolutely wonderful. The on stage miming, and real instrumentalists were fantastic. The dances were wonderfully choreographed. Golde and the girls were very good. Motel the Tailor was very good singer. The draw back was not the acting of Tevye, but his singing voice. How anyone can be charmed by this is beyond me. It is a very injured instrument. So. If you are going to hear a great Tevye, this is not it. However, If you are going to see a wonderful overall production, then I would recommend this heartily.

  • Lead lacked talent

by rightblondeone on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

The lead in the show was not up to par with the rest of the actors/singers and the overall show. I enjoyed the rest of it however.

  • Awesome story average singing

by bucksgirl3 on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

The story of Fiddler on the Roof is a wonderful and entertaing story that was beautifully acted out by the cast. I loved the humor and great acting ability that Harvey Fierstein brought to the part. I however was sorely disappointed by the average singing ability of the entire cast. Fiddler has such beautiful music that is so well known by audiences that it should be flawless in its delivery. For a broadway musical of this caliber, I was disappointed by the lack of musicality on the part of the cast.

  • Best Fiddler production I've ever seen

by SFbooboo on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Almost 40 years ago my parents took me to see the original on Broadway. I was stunned and mesmerized from the moment the curtain lifted to reveal a little man sitting on a roof and what I found out later was referred to as outstanding choreography. This holds true even today. While I've seen other productions with Paul Lipson, Theodore Bikel, & Topol, Noone brought the comedic sense of timing that Harvey Fierstein adds to this performance. Getting past my image of Harvey dressed as Edna in Hairspray took a bit of work, but by the end of the first number I'd achieved that sense of suspended disbelief and even think he would really make a good father to five daughters. Of course no production is without its' kinks. The fiddler's make believe violin playing was out of sync. We heard the violin play while his hands separated from the bow. Harvey Firestein's unmistakable voice may not project every word and I'm certan some of the lyrics were lost on those who've never heard the score. His rendition of If I were a Rich Man was far from classic..BUT, he more than makes up for it with a sense of comedic sarcasm that any Jewish theater goer would have experienced in his or her own home while growing up. He knew when to make us laugh and when to touch our hearts. His ensemble was second to none and the three eldest daughters singing Matchmaker were superb. The dance numbers were so beautiful and exciting, making this show a quadruple threat, dancing, singing, crying and laughing.

  • The abrupt ending made Fiddler 4/5 stars!

by AlisonF on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

The abrupt ending served as a major distraction from Fiddler's otherwise overall excellence. The first half of the show before intermission was simply stunning, but the second was much too short and when the curtain closed I asked myself that was it? The ending definitely served as my greatest disappointment. It left Fiddler seeming unbalanced and unfinished. A little finesse at the end by the direction would serve as a great enhancement to the show. Harvey Fierstein in his performance as Tevia stole the show. Sidel, the role of Tevia's eldest daughter, was not the powerhouse performance that the role usually exemplifies. Although I will conceed that the understudy was filling in during the performance I attended, which could possibly explain my disappointment. Overall, due to Fierstein and the first half of the show I would give Fiddler 4/5 stars.

  • Fiddler on the Roof

by Polytechnic on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

Tevye was very hard to understand with his gravely voice. We were in orchestra and many times could not understand what he was saying. His singing was poor but the rest of the singers and dancers were great. The theatre was extremely hot with no ventilation. Overall a poor experience. Will not attend another event at the Golden Gate Theatre.

  • Fiddler excelled all expectations we had!

by Sambra on 1/29/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein was unforgettable as Tevye - my whole family thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal of this memorable character... a figure who struggles with the changes in the world affecting his families traditions and behaviours. Such a wonderful, poignant and yet charmingly humorous job Mr. Fierstein did! The supporting cast simply glowed in his presence. I would recommend this show everyone!

  • Excellent Play

by RichardEW on 1/28/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed the play. We were in the last row and the acoustics and speaking was done so well that we had no problem hearing. Harvey Fierstein was perfect in his role.
