Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

The ferry ride was beautiful. Erykah performed for 2 hours.... So amazing to see the NYC skyline to the left. A great time!
Awesome venue, beautful setting, show was insane. Janelle Monae and E Badu are always sooooo good. Best show of the summer, best show of the year.
You could already feel the buzz on the water taxi to Governor's Island....Janelle kicked the show off by riding on a crew member's shoulders and sang her little heart out....Her dancing, crowd surfing, painting, and voice was everything I wanted it to be and more. Then to top it all off, she got 'caped' at the end of the show by a crew member, James Brown style. It was perfect, she put on a performance most deserving of that.... Now Ms. Erykah showed out. She walked out in a fabulous outfit that included leather pants and knee-high boots...Her energy was electric and she sang so many songs that I didn't know, but I could have cared less. Every note she sang, and her back-up divas, was on point. She had the whole crowd swaying from beginning to end.
If you have not had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Badu live then by all means possible get yo butt moving!!! :) There was a beautiful sunset on the island and everyone was really at ease just going with the flow, not rude or pushy at all...A new singer Janelle opened the show and she pumped the energy up with her edgy beats and fresh sound. Of course, Ms. Badu's performance brought the house down!! The only thing was I didn't see a place selling her merchandise...I would love to have gotten an autographed cd or something but to have this experience in itself is something I will ALWAYS remember...and I have video on my camera, lol. Love you Erykah!!
Erykah was so Great this is my 2nd time going to see her the first was a Radio City Music Hall That was great as well... She works her beat machine so well and her outfit like a tribute to MJ.... Also She looked amazing!!! LOVE YOU ERYKAH!!
OMGOSH i had a BLAST at this show seriously it was better than i ever could have imagined and i am a HUGE Erykah fan. she is incredible her new material was amazing and everything right down to the venue was PERFECT. I am on Cloud 9 i loved the show sooooo much i want to go to AC to see it again tomorrow!! haha Best concert I have ever seen hands down.
janelle monae made some whack painting and threw it into the crowd. she then crowdsurfed. that was not enough for her; she came back to sing with erykah throughout her entire set. erykah started off really strong and blended michael jackson's "off the wall" with the instrumentals of erykah's "i want you". the tailing end of the concert was slower and getting out of governor's island was hell.
Her performance actually left me in awe.... Her blends of jazz, hip-hop, soul, and funk in a storybook performance was definitely enjoyable. I have not been to a concert in a while that actually created an experience rather than just listening to an artist live. The vibe was definitely energetic however a bit too much weed smoke in the outside air. LOL Anyhow, her voice was truely remarkable for such a small woman and her background singers and band compliemented her voice w/ crisp melodies and beats which just brought you into another world as per the theme of the performance. Even her encore performance kept people wanting more and regrets to those who left and got on the boat early......
Great to see Erykah Badu live. Beautiful beautiful audience. Nice setting on the Island but the logistics were a bit under-rehearsed.
I hardly ever write reviews for anything but there's no way I could let this opportunity pass. This was by far the most amazing concert I have ever experienced! Janelle's performance was spectacular. She has a keen understanding of audience and displayed this through her constant participation with us (throwing her jacket into the crowd, creating a painting on the stage then tossing it into the crowd, stage diving and then joining us in the audience without security to watch Erykah perform) Erykah is always magical when she performs and this was no different. Her ability to go into songs back from Baduizm and now to New Amerykah Part One and having the audience flow with her every step of the way shows her sustainability amongst her fans. The only downside of the night was the venue. It was absolutely gorgeous as she had a beautiful backdrop of NYC but having to wait for a ferry at midnight in order to get off the island was very off putting, especially as many of us were extremely exhausted after dancing and singing all night.
janelle monae set it off with a rip-roaring opening set that was equal parts punk, electro and r&b soul. girl's got game and expect great things from her in future. and with the crowd primed, madam badu followed to great expectations of her own and did not disappoint. rolled through her full catalogue of beats and croons and rhythms and tossed in some classic old skool hip hop and rap for good measure. and i'd be remiss if i didn't also tip the cap to the venue, the beach at governor's island. really unique venue with great vistas over manhattan, spacious, comfortable, and great sound. only downside is there is only 1 food hut and the line was consistently long. on the flip side, multiple alcohol huts with short lines kept the good times flowing. great show!
Erykah and the band were awesome! The sound was so tight!! She has such a great presence and gets the crowd pumped. I love how she changes things up all the time with her music. The tribute to Michael Jackson was terrific. The venue was great with NYC skyline in clear sight. Erykah Badu rocked it... plain and simple!!
both Janelle Monae and Badu put on an amazing show. It was a powerful night, under an almost full moon, and two sistas were resurrecting feminine energy. The crowd was live and super supportive. Governor's island was cool. However, the process to get out of the island was exhausting. We waited almost an hour to get on a ferry, which then took us to another pier that was not the one we embarked on. But it was still an amazing experience to sail by the statue of liberty on our way to the show. SO HAPPY I ATTENDED THIS CONCERT
Im totally not fan of her persay...I am a fan of music however, and she was great. Her performance was certainly for those who love creative and artistic musicians and music in general. See the show....you wont regret.
She is one of the most talented artists of our time.
erykah badu is a true performer and musician. her show was impeccable, flawless... and you definately get your moneys worth she always plays at least untill midnight and she doesnt just sing the songs straight like the album, she works them all together and mixes them up and really showcases her true vocal talent. not a show to miss
ERYKAH IS THE BEST POINT BLANK PERIOD!!!!! EVERYONE HAS TO SEE HER AT LEAST ONCE IN THEIR LIFETIME.
The Concert was great. She is a great performer. I had a blast the entire time. She was on time and the concert was a good length of time. I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone.
She's always so unique in her performances, always amazing and original.
Once again Erykah had me in awe over her talent as a true artist. She worked her beat machine while taking the crowd "way back" and had the whole place sing'n along to all our Fat Belly fave's. A must see show!
