MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

    Good performance, subpar venue

by P80 on 12/4/19Big Night Live - Boston

Talib and Yasiin went on later than expected, and played for shorter than expected but were excellent for the songs they did perform. The venue, however, has extremely limited quality viewing angles for the general admission ticket holders. Huge pillars obstructed the view for many and the VIP sections were really the only decent seats in the house. Doubtful I will return there.

    Frustrating

by Dirty Freedom on 12/3/19Big Night Live - Boston

Event space was cool. But I'm sorry - doors opening at 8:00 for a show that doesn't start until 11:30!!! That's not cool. We were standing up for THREE AND A HALF HOURS before Black Star even came out! Yes, we were treated to a couple DJs playing good music while they appeared to be checking their email on stage, but really. The venue was packed. You had to fight your way to the bathroom. It was a little much. When they finally came out, they were great, but I honestly almost didn't care by that time.

    Waste of time & money!

    by M. C. on 12/2/19

The concert, on 11/30/19, was oversold and people were dangerously smooshed together. It was scheduled to start at midnight and there were no opening acts. Yasin finally started his set around 1:20 am when people were tired and frustrated. Sony Hall is disappointing, as well, for allowing that many people in the building.

    Good concert at best

by JR on 12/2/19Big Night Live - Boston

I have mixed feelings about this concert. It was supposed to start at 9 pm, but it ended up starting around 11 pm, after having two DJs attempting to warm up the crowd. Then, Black Star's DJ also spun some records for about 15 minutes to try to warm up the crowd when it became clear that everyone was getting anxious and exasperated. Finally, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli came on stage, but the audio was terrible, since they were using these special microphones to create reverberations. The microphones's sound levels made it extremely difficult to hear what either one of them was rapping, since the music coming from the DJ was louder and clearer than the two rappers's microphones. To top it off, after such a long wait, the concert lasted only a bit over an hour and ended in a very abrupt way. For what they charged for each ticket, and given their ample musical repertoire, they could have played for a bit longer and started their concert earlier. Throughout their brief set, there were people who decided to leave. One can assume that it was because they had to catch one of the last trains to head back home, due to disappointment with the audio quality of the concert, or what seemed like complete and utter disrespect for an audience that was kept waiting for over 3 hours, since the doors to the venue opened. I wanted to like the concert for what it was (Yasiin's excentricity and Talib's repeated attempts to get the crowd involved). It was definitely a bittersweet moment. Seeing them reunited, performing, while the quality of the performance and their extreme tardiness made it difficult to fully enjoy.

    Amazing show however

    by J. H. on 12/2/19Big Night Live - Boston

It was an amazing show, however it started 3 hours late. There was no explanation on the delay. It was frustrating to say the least. Despite that, the show was great.
