About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Erykah was amazing

by AQueen66 on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 3 out of 5

Seeing Ms Badu live was certainly unforgettably. She is an amazing performer. You will not be dissappointed if you go see her. Her outfit was stunning and her voice range is GREAT! The band.... there is none out there like it. The venue was a different story. Although the House of Blues ia a nice place I thought it was very unfair to be told the show starts at 8. The doors did not open until 8 and then you had to stand waiting for another 2 hours before the show actually started. There was a great DJ playing music to try to keep your mind off of the time however, considering General Admission includes no seats it was very uncomfortable to stand in one spot for 2 hours not really knowing when the show would start. Oh, and I have to mention the rude people that come late and want to force their way into the smallest space available, close to the front, not caring about the people that got there early enough to get a good spot. I'd love to see Erykah Badu again but not at AC House of Blues.

  • A modern diva of the classic style

by Drsproket on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

This woman is beautiful, brilliant, and simply one of the best preformers out there. Her stag persona is powerful and moving. If your a fan you must see her live if your not you should go for the sheer performance.

  • Erykah Badu is off the chain...I love it

by BirthdayBoi on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

It was great show. The late start was frustrating and yet to be explained, but the performance made the wait worth every minute. As an artist and performer, EryKah is at the top of her game. My only request is that she retire "Tyrone".

  • Git Down At Governor's Island!!

by rodskiluv8 on 8/7/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

What a chill venue to see two spectacular artists! It was my first time on Governor's Island and it was a blast! Janelle Monae opened the show with her funky, eclectic style! This little girl's got some pipes AND a unique point of view - not your typical cookie cutter R&B from the radio!!!! And Miss Erykah brought it like she always do!! This was my 8th or 9th time seeing her over the last ten years and she just keeps getting better! It might be because she just keeps adding more hits to her repetoir! It was a sho nuff funky good time!! The entire crowd was just grooving inder the stars all night! It even turned into a bit of a dance party after Erykah left the stage and her dj kept on spinning!!

  • Erykah is simply amazing

See her whenever you can. What an amazing performance!

by misstoya70 on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed myself at the Erykah Badu concert. It was amazing and she puts on a great performance. I would definitely go see her again.

  • Erykah gives a Great Show

by WORKHORSE329 on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah Badu gave a great show last night in AC. She has evolved into a complete artist. She is very relaxed on stage and has the crowd feeling her every move.

  • Ms. Badu's Blessing!!!

by Sher2971 on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Ms Badu is one performer I can NEVER get tired of seeing live. There is something about her live performances that her fans NEED, her music, her live shows are a requirement! I have seen multiple dates on the same tour however it's never the same show there is always a different interpretation. It was definitely a Blessing to be in the House of Blues and be in the presence of such a beautiful sister! I love it when an artist shares more than the music but a part of themselves and Ms. Badu never disappoints! I brought a non-believer who was familiar with her music but who had never seen her perform live and their response was 'Damm that was the BEST show I have ever seen, period hands down!!!' Well Done Ms Badu!!! We LOVE YOU!!! Keep Rockin & Stay Blessed!!!

  • I love Erykah but I don't have all night

by 856SouthJersey on 8/7/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

I'm a really, really big fan of Erykah Badu but was so frustrated by the time she finally got on stage (10:00pm) I couldn't enjoy the show. She sounds more amazing live than on her CDs, definitely, but I can't take artists who don't respect the time of their fans. My wife and I had to leave early and miss half the show because it started so late. Were it not a weeknight perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad, but still we would have needed to make other child care arrangements to accommodate it being over much later than we anticipated. Unfortunately, that will most likely be my first and last Erykah Badu concert though I'll still buy all of her new albums.

  • Erykah Badu is sublime!!!!!!!!!

by tekaumaiwa on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah always gives an amazing performance! This was no exception she was so bright and so giving! It is always so well thought out and prepared for so that all the artists can really give their all. She is such an inspiration to love and believe in yourself and she looks so goood doing it. I love how she creates amazing gorgeous new looks and her singers are always part of the presentation and she really brings love and light and such great healing sounds. Thank you Erykah Badu for being so true to you and God! Jah no dead.

  • Erykah Badu ALWAYS delivers a great show!

by BoogieBrown on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

I'm so glad I came to this show. Janelle Monae opened for Erykah, and she gave an incredible performance. I am sold on her talents as a new artist, and would purchase her album. I can't wait for new material from Janelle Monae. The only thing I found to be rather odd, was when she made a painting, threw it in the crowd, and later had stage crew ask for it back! What was the point of giving it away? Erykah came on in full effect! I'm a huge fan, and appreciate her talent.

  • Amazed Mystic Sound

by HelloMissK on 8/6/09The Beach at Governor Island - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I arrived there @ 7:00pm. The Beach is an live outdoor venue located in called Governor Island. We reach there taking water taxi from Lower Manhattan. Swing in a breeze, I enjoyed the view and smell of the sea with good weather. Viewing skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan, the open stage was set up. This time I found the international flavor in the crowd. The show started at 9:40pm following the opening act of Janelle Monae. Some people moved forward to be close the stage in the break time. Hearing audiece's ebullience voices, Erykah appeared posing with blue backlight in the mystic air. As soon as she hit the rhythm machine, I got to feel her great music talent. If I may say, she is the Muse of Sounds. Her sound made me feel to be in the Xanadu. Also I thought the Beach was the very good location to feel her mystic sound. I think she is also small but she can take us, audience, to a dream world with her magic. Yes, I can say she is a magician. Her fingers took control the venue to be the wonderland. I saw rays of lights from her fingers. I left the venue at 11:10pm, but the concert was still continued. At 11:30pm, once music stopped, but Eryka had encore stage. Of course, the audience was so satisfied the show.

  • Erykah is QUEEN!

by bjw923 on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Yuo think you have seen it all when it comes to great shows. If you have not seen Erykah Badu live you DO NOT know what you are missing! Her funky fresh style & persona is magnified when you see that first back drop hit & she is all in your senses! You can look around the crowd and see every color & every style imaginable....her presence is in the ranks of royalty. Erykah is QUEEN!

  • Amazing Performer / Amazing Venue

by AdjApple on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Gov's Island is an incredible venue, easy to get to, comfortable. The food and drink vendors are somewhat reasonable, and there is a good variety of products offered. Bathrooms are fairly clean and the wait was not long. Only downside was having to wait about 15 mins before we could board a ferry after the concert was over. Erykah Badu is always an amazing performer - I can't do her justice here. Her opening act was a pleasant surprise - really entertaining and talented! For once, an opening act I actually appreciate!

  • a night sent from above!

by AquaChild on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah & her band were incredible! She nailed it with her set list, playing an ecclectic mix of songs (and many of my personal favorites). Erykah LIVE is such a beautiful gift to my ears...she never fails in amaziing me over and over again. A brilliant woman & a brilliant show! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Janelle was great, Erykah absolutely Incredible

by rade on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Janelle Monae opened the show, and what a show it was! She was energetic, charismatic, sometimes puzzling (performing a full song while painting on a canvas), and always in perfect voice. None of that compared to Erykah Badu, though. That. Woman. Was. Incredible.

  • BaduLove

by BaduLove on 8/6/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was amazing. There's nothing else to say.

  • Badu is a bad ass!

by sunsetgirl on 8/5/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah is so cool! She has an amazing voice, is an amazing performer - a true artist. Great show - she did some new stuff, some old stuff, a Michael Jackson song, and did a little east coast/west coast rap-a-long. The water taxi beach was a great venue - outside, right on the water, not too big, would definitely see more shows there.

  • Bodacious Badu!!

by SistahSpinstah on 8/5/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Despite the lack of a natural breeze on a hot summer evening, the divine Miss Erykah Badu blew New York away last night at Governor's Island in a tornado of explosive performance. Her playful song adaptations and verbal improvisations set her aside from other RnB live performances in a musical league all her own. She delivered song after song with seemingly effortless delivery, donning a shiny pair of patent leather pants and a chic top hat. I studied the faces around me and the crowd was awestruck. Mesmerized and smiling faces dotted the pavement before the stage, as other people belted lyrics out loud along with her. She was an artful powerhouse, a future-perfect reflection of the past. Erykah left no stone unturned and hit songs from every album, often weaving instrumental hodgepodges of full length tracks with record interludes. High moments included her crazy chaotic remix of the old school Badu classic "On &On", New Amerykah's "Soldier" (with the post 9-11 lyrics "you get the wake up call when you saw the buildings fall" as she looked over the water towards Ground Zero), and the ultimate crowd pleasing "Love of My Life" number. Erykah could easily have commanded the stage all by her lonesome self, but her epic band and roaring back up singers (including her adorable sister) completed the ear-gasmic two hour show. Janelle Monae's energetic opening act set it all off but by 15 minutes in to the main show, there was no thought of anything but Erykah as she captured the undivided attention of die hard and not-so die hard fans alike. She truly is an analog girl living in a digital world. There is no other. If I could do it all over again tonight, I'd spend double the original ticket price.

  • incredible show

badu rocked it all night with her new material and an innovative take on some of her classics
