About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Wind me up Chuck!!!

by ligtbright on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The Foreign Exchange - Ennhh...dont really know them, didnt know their music, it was aight though Mike Epps - funnier than what i thought he was gonna be; had the crowd rolling Chrisette Michelle - She did here thing, as usual! Definately going to see her again Chuck Brown - had the crowd on their feet; partied hard; the best act all night, by far (shoulda closed out the show) Raphael Saadiq - did his thing; hit the old school classics Erykah Badu - she did her thing too; seen better performances from her; it was aight, coulda been better

  • Chuck Brown was awesome.

    by lish1215 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at this venue and it was great, I had great lawn seats (obtaining my tickets late), the view to the stage was great. All acts was great. Mike Epps was funny as hell (do the chicken). Chuck Brown and Benny wore me out, should have been last. I love the old school go-go. I wish Chrisette Michelle would sing Mr. radio off her first CD and of course Ms. Badu took you to another place with her wonderful performance. Thank you, great lineup.

  • Quantity not Quality

by LaShayism on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 1 out of 5

It would have been wonderful to hear and experience the talent feature! The sound was not good at all and there where entirely TOO Many tickets sold. I had a very hard time even hearing the talent. If a person was not seated under the pavilion itself or directly out in front, they could let go of the idea of hearing the concert at all. It was not possible for everyone to be positioned within ear shot of the concert let alone have a space to sit down... I would state how I feel about the performances but again I could hear them...

  • Summer Spirit Festival feat. Erykah Badu was HOT!

by Nodie on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This show had incredible energy and was AWESOME! Every performer from Mike Epps to Erykah Badu sound better in person, LIVE! That's a sign of true ARTIST and not those studio singers. Foreign Exchange gave us Hip-Hop with soul and funk! Raphael Saadiq is taking it back old school style when singing was singing! Chrisette Michele is just showing folks her vocals, style, and finally independence! Mike Epps was amazingly funny; he had me in tears! I wished he could have done more! Chuck Brown, our DC native musician is the bomb and had me sweating - no correction - DRENCHED! That man is inspiring for his age and still blowing up the stage! Foreign Exchange gave us some good sounds of Hip Hop with soul! And then the Queen of Neo-Soul hit the stage and gave us classic Erykah groove's - she should have played more but they only give her an hour - but she uses that time wisely to get us groovin'! True Erykah fans will appreciate her set! Go see this tour! It's hot and worth the money - best thing I did this summer!

  • THE ENTIRE SHOW WAS A BLAST!!!!!

  • Summer Spirit Festival was Amazing!!

by JazzyPhizzle on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

It's been a while since I've been to a concert but this was surely a great one to come back too. All the artist were great especially Erykah. I'm not the biggest fan of Go-Go but Chuck Brown put on a great performance that had everyone on their feet. It was definetly worth every penny!

  • Great time

by Kanye on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

Though Erykah didn't perform as long as I expected her to, she still gave a great show. Chuck Brown tore it up tho.

  • Summer Spirit Festival featuring Chuck Brown...

    by Leggy30 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Show was excellent!!! Chuck and Lil Benny did their thing BUT I was VERY disappointed Erykah did not get her time and was cut off. We could have opened with Mike Epps and did without Foreign Exchange.

  • The show was awesome!

by Midi on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was awesome! All of the entertainers were superb. My only issue is that the show ended rather abruptly and it was evident the Erykah had not finished her performance.

  • Erykah Badu

by Ihadagreattime on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was incredible. However, I thought Erykah Badu's concert performance ended abruptly and Mike Epps did not come out towards the concluding performances. Last, the arrangement of the artist could be improved. If Chuck Brown is on the venue, he should come out just before the main attraction. And after he performs there should be a thirty minute intermission; he is a tough act to follow for any artist. That being said, I had a great time. My only regret is that I did not buy tickets for other members in my family to experience a summer time concert at the Merriweather. I attended the Capital Jazz fest as well. Although I enjoyed myself I would have liked to have seen more Straight Ahead jazz artist on the venue. Peace Malcolm

  • Crazy crowded

by TiMari on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

All the acts sound and looked great. Performances were outstanding. I've visited this venue before - sold out. It appeared this event was over-sold. The lawn seats/area was packed like sardines. The overflow was very uncomfortable to travel through. I felt bad for them but overjoyed with my seats. - Center/Front. An extreme massive amount of people - wow!

  • Summer Spirit Festival was Amazing!!

    by Sage84 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

All the acts were fantastic. Chrisette Michele's voice was incredible, I didn't really know much about her before but now I'm a fan! Mike Epps was hilarious. Raphael Saadiq was hot! He did a good mix of new and old stuff...those Tony! Toni! Toné! songs really took me back. Erykah Badu was as always just amazing! Her remix of Apple Tree was off the f'ing hook!! Everyone was great but D.C. does not party harder than when there's Go Go involved. Chuck Brown got on the stage and the party seemed like it would go on forever. I was worried Erykah wouldn't get to perform with the amount of time Chuck was on. Awesome Awesome show!! It was well done and I never wanted it to end!

  • Summer Spirit Festival was just what I needed!

by SinceritySpeaks on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I have seen E. Badu in concert many times and I love the way she continues to reinvent herself. Everything was great from her stage presence to her outfit to her display of the digital drumming. A lot of people slept on New Amerykah Pt. One (The 4th World War) and it was evident while the majority of the crowd stood in awe as Erykah performed THE HEALER, MY PEOPLE, ME and some of MASTER TEACHER. Feeling the atmosphere and yelling out *THIS ONE IS FOR DILLA - HIP HOP!!!* a young lady in front of me asked "Which album is this song from?" It was made clear the level of sleptivity (yes I made that up) that was placed on this album for some reason. It's unexplainable to me - but hopefully those who didn't get it will now do so and those who got it but only listened once will go back and give it another trail. I also loved Raphael Saadiq's travel through his musical career - taking us through the old Tony Toni Tone' with Anniversary, Lay Your Head (on my pilloooooow! That was the jam!) and *It's all because of yoooou-I'm never sad and bluuuue!* AHHH! Love that song and brought back so many memories of how music was my everything back then. Saadiq's newest art is very soulful and definitely takes us back to those James Brown days. I heard one of the older lady's say, "go ahead JB!" Saadiq's background singers/dancers were off the chain too! I thought Chrisette Michelle was OK. Just OK because I think she needs to work on her stage presence just a little. Her voice is so beautiful at times you didn't even pay attention to what she was doing on stage - but the few moments that your eyes went back to just her and the stage was a little awkward. Yes-I'm from the DC area, but I never really got down with Go-Go. But I respect Chuck Brown because his performance was the only one where EVERYONE was out of their seat partying! Myself included! It was BEAUTIFUL! My only disappointment of the night was one of my favorite groups - Foreign Exchange - I've never seen them live so I was especially excited to see one of my favorite rappers - Phonte' get his sing on - but it didn't come together for me. D-Brock! You were great as always! Tune everyone else up.

  • ALL Acts were GREAT

    by Nubian1 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Mike Epps had folks rolling in the aisles..Foreign Exchange had folks grooving, even those who were unfamiliar with them...Chrisette Michelle was lovely as always...Chuck Brown what can one even say, that man can always get folks on their feet, he is timeless with hits from the 70s til now...Rafeal Saadiq brought it from Tony Tone Toni thru Lucy Pearl to his old school-new style...And Miss Badu with her Nawlins Funeral march motif closed the show properly with her iconic "bag lady." Each artist fittingly paid at tribute to MJ. One thing I can definitely appreciate about Mike Epps is that he makes himself real familiar about the area where he is performing and tailors his jokes to the area...some other comedians tend to make generalizations but he tuned into the DC and Baltimore areas very well. If this festival comes to your area, don't miss it.

  • EXCELLENT!!!

by PeeJayEss on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I bought my tickets to the Summer Spirit Festival as soon as the tickets went on sale because of the line up. Mike Epps is a "fool"!! I missed Chrisette Michele's performance in June when she opened for Anthony Hamilton due to parking issues. She has a beautiful voice. Chuck Brown is an INSTITUTION in the DC/MD/VA area and I never miss an opportunity to see him when he performs in an adult venue. He had EVERYONE on their feet dancing, singing and reminiscing about the good old Go-Go days of the 80's - 90's. I've always been a fan of Raphael Saadiq. I admire the fact that he stepped out of the box with his latest CD to bring back music from the 60's era. He is SO talented. Although I've been a fan since day one, I have NEVER seen Erykah Badu perform live. LOVE HER! So laid back and genuine. I will NEVER miss her again when she comes to the DMV..... What happened to Mike Epps introducing Erykah? Do you think he was passed out in the back? He had a cup of something in his hand ALL NIGHT!!!! LOL!!!

  • erykah was the bomb

    by rentmac7 on 8/9/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

this was a great show... really great. I could not wait on her.. and she did a wonderful job. I want to go again when ever she comes again.. please let me know ... I loved this concert..

  • ERYKAH BADU's BOOTS were FIRE!!

by showboatbarbie on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

i LOVE ERYKAH BADU's ECLECTICISM! she "marched" out in slow motion0 reminiscent of a TOY SOLDER in her TOP HAT, DOO RAG & BLACK LACQUERED PANTS (patent leather?), military style jacket and 10in (?) platform stiletto BOOTS! OMG!! HOT TO DEATH! if anyone has a clear picture, please post it! Raphael's RETRO set was FAB! he can do no wrong by me... and i LOVED that he went back and pulled out a few TONY, TONI, TONE' (lay your head on my piiiiiiiilllllllllloooooooow.... !!!!) , and LUCY PEARL hits! but being a native washingtonian, CHUCK BABY and Lil' BENNY kept me on my feet!

  • Awesome

  • HAD THE BEST TIME!!!

I needed for Erykah Badu to perform longer! The other groups were great!

  • Non Stop Entertainment

by Simnicity on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best shows I've been to... 6 hours of non-stop entertainment from The Foreign Exchange, Chrisette Michele, Chuck Brown, Raphael Saadiq and Miss Erykah Badu. The event was hosted by comedian Mike Epps so the day was beautiful blend of comedy and live music. The only downside was that Erykah Badu's performance was cut short as the venue had to close probably because they had so many artists on the bill... but I'm not complaining :-D
