About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

    by 50piece on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I had the ABSOLUTE best time ever. All the artists were amazing. I give a thumbs up to Chuck. The auduence was on their feet the entire performance. It was amazing to see the people dancing to the GO-GO beat of Chuck Brown and when Lil Benny came on it was a moment to remember. Bottem Line the GO-GO experience is always the BEST. Raphael Saddiq was better than I had expected and Erykah Badu...AWESOME. Mike Epps...LOL he was the best that I've ever seen him. I had never heard of Foreign Exchange and having seen them in person, I would definitely pay to see the perform again. Chrisette Michelle was AMAZING. Being a new artist the audience can sometimes be tough to sell...she SOLD me and yes I would pay to see her perform again as well. BOTTEM LINE...The concert was the BEST that I have attended all summer.

  • Summer Spirit Festival ~ Awesome!

by CncertQueen on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The promoters couldn't have put together a better lineup. Everybody was great! My only suggestion would have been to put Rafael Saadiq up before Chuck Brown.

  • The Festial was great!!

    by Marsha25 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

There is nothing bad I can say about this concert!!!!!!!!! Aside from it being out side, from start to finish I never sat down. I really enjoyed myself. This was a perfect example of what grow and sexy is. Mike Epps was the host to keep thing moving and laughing, he enjoyed himself so much while Chuck Brown preformed Mike Epps felt a need to be apart of the band and backup singers. Chrisette Michele did her thing with out backup singer. I mean her vocal range is nothing to mess with. Rapheil from Toni Toni Toni brought back member of why I fell in love with his songs. And he was just too clean in the suit. And Erykah Badu there are no words that can describe how amazing her performance was. She's got so much talent . She's fly in every thing she does, and you can always know she will keep you guessing on what she will do. Her style is sick. If you haven't seen her performance!!!!! Get a ticket when she comes to your town. You won't regret it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Had a GREAT time!!!

by MelLid on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first show at the Merriweather Post Pavilion and certainly wont be the last. There was a bit of gridlock getting into the show but nothing too bad. The walk from the parking lot wasnt nearly as bad as the Nissan Pavilion. The staff was welcoming and helped us to our seats effectively. We arrived to the show about 20-30 min early and visited one of the concession stands 10 min before the show. I used my cash on the way to the venue on gas but that was no problem because they accepted Visa cards! Food was a bit pricey (10$ for fries and a soda) but what else do you expect at a concert? Not a problem. We got our snacks in about 7 minutes and were back in our seats just in time. The opening act was the group Foreign Exchange. The lead vocalist was pleasant and in between songs he would acknowledge the crowd and say a few jokes. Their music was pretty soothing and they had a AMAZING female singer. I couldnt believe that voice came from such a small woman! I liked a few songs and will probably purchase from amazon for my mp3 player. Next came comedian Mike Epps who was nothing short of hilarious. He kept the good vibes going with countless jokes and freestyle comedy. Chrisette Michele was the second act and probably should have went on first. She was pretty underwhelming. No background singers and not much stage presence. She has a beautiful voice but her show was very bland. Still did not ruin the mood. Mike Epps returned with the jokes and the laughs followed. Chuck Brown was the third act and BOY did he bring the house down! EVERYONE stood and chanted "Wind me up Chuck!" The chant lasted until the music started! If your a local native you know how it goes! Once the music starts the crowd NEVER sits! Chuck's live band NEVER disappoints. He played many of his classic hits like "Run Joe" and the crowd participation was as expected. Lil Benny also came on stage and rocked some of his old hits! Crowd went NUTS! Mike Epps also partied on stage and sang with the background singers! It was CLASSIC! There was a intermission and we decided to take a bathroom break. It was REALLY crowded out. Its great being a male in situations like this. There was a long line for the female bathroom. Raphael Saadiq was the fourth act. Mike Epps introduced him and it took a bit of time for him to come out. No biggie. The crowed still welcomed him. Ive heard much about his live show (9:30 club) but he did not deliver. He played some newer tracks but they really didn't move the crowd. Once he played his classic songs the crowd got into it a bit more. He went back to some newer stuff and lost the crowd again. Almost the entire venue was in their seats. He even had to ask why everyone was "On their a*s." I was a bit let down and figured he would keep the energy moving from the last act. During the last intermission a local radio personality played some Baltimore club music. The Baltimore crowd stood, sang, and danced. He also played some DC GO-GO music and the crowed REALLY partied! We all sang some classic songs and danced. A local Hip Hop Artist Wale even came out for a bit! Fun intermission! Last but not least Ms Erykah Badu blessed the stage! Her band played before she entered and got the crowd moving. When Ms Badu came out the crowed welcomed her clapping in excitement. She started out with a couple of tracks from her latest album then got into some of her classic hits. She blended her songs with other classic hits and newer up-tempo beats. She was told that her time was up but still played on! She teased us when the "Tyrone" beat came on and told the crowd "Yall aint ready for that." It was all in fun! She even got into the crowd and let the fans get close up pictures. SHE WAS AMAZING! I wish her show could have lasted even longer! I will definitely pay to see her again! Leaving the show can be a hassle for the most part but it wasnt too bad for us. We let most of the crowd exit before we left our seats. We got to the car and sat for about 10-15 minutes. We then started the car and went against the crowd towards another exit and got out shortly after. We sat in NO traffic! The only reason I didnt rate the show at 5 stars was because of 2 underwhelming acts. Definitely a good show none the less! My girlfriend enjoyed it and so did I! Thanks to all those who helped to put this show together! Look forward to the next!

  • More Erykah Badu Needed!

by dcpublicist on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

This festival was nice but Erykah Badu's performance wasn't long enough and she came on too late. She is an unbelievable artist and needs as much time as possible to share her work. Badu's performance was nothing short of phenomenal, as expected. She is so creative and polished. Not a performance to miss! Ralphael Saadiq's performance was OK. He sang too many songs from his new album and most of the crowd wasn't familiar with them. He tried though. The sound system was really off and he and his background singers sounded like they were yelling most of the time. Good energy though. As usual, Chuck Brown was a crowd pleaser. He got the crowd going for a full hour, nonstop. He keeps everyone on their feet. It's unbelievable he still has it at his age. Overall a nice show but it was Erykah Badu's show, so I thought she should have had a longer time to perform.

  • Awesome

    by TeeCee123 on 8/9/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah Badu really knows how to rock a crowd. She had everyone on their feet singing and rapping. I would love to see her indoors where the sound quality is better.

  • Chuck Brown Stole the Show

by DGlo on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

Erykah was the feature act but she was not the star of this show, DC's own Chuck Brown was the best artist at this festival. He had the crowd on their feet and partying from his opening number. Erykah was a disappointment, I've seen her performed at least three other times and have always walked away feeling like I got my money worth but not this time. She didn't even perform her trade mark "Call Tyrone" or "Bag Lady" and it seemed as though she cut her performance short. Christie Michelle was very good and I have nothing good to say about Raphael. Your are doing yourself an injustice if you've never heard the God Father (Chuck Brown)of GoGo perform. His perforamnce always brings the crowd to their feet!

  • Summer Spirit Festival was great fun!

Chuck Brown pumped the crowd w/ some down home partying!

  • E. BADU FAN 4 LIFE!!!

    by MRSJAY27 on 8/9/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Badu's performance at Chene Park on 8/7/09 was hands down one of the best performances she given here in the D. She kept the crowd on there feet as she dazzled her audience with her contagious energy. I have been to all of her Detroit performances and each time I see her show, I'm reminded why I simply can't get enough of her. Mrs. JAY

  • Chuck had the groove going on

    by MJ5555 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

I like so many others waited to hear "Tyrone" and for that I was disappointed. Erykah looked fabulous and being the featured singer I expected her set to be longer than it was. No fault of hers. Chuck Brown was awesome and had it not been for him, I would say, I was totally fraustrated. The other talent did ok. The sound system was not good at all and the next time please get another cameraman. The one you had was not following the talent! Overall, it was an average show!

  • The Summer Spirit Festival

The Summer Spirit festival was wonderful and well worth the money. The concert lasted over 5 hour long with no stop entertainment. I would recommend this concert is a must!

  • Super Saturday!

by CapitalVoyager on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The Artist matched the atmosphere! It was a feel good event, The "Who's Who" of DC showed up in record numbers. Chuck Brown and Little Bennie Rocked!! Chrissette Michelle is talented, Mike Epps kept us laughing and Erykah.... Well what can I say, unique and entertaining. I had a great time!! Are tickets on Sale for next year??

  • Summer Spirit Festival Featuring Badu was Amazing!

    by LadyIvy1908 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

All of the Acts were fantastic. My only complaint was my girl Erykah Badu did not have enough stage time. She is an amazing performer and she was the headliner, however, her time on stage was shorter than some of the opening acts!! Next time, the number of acts should be shortened so that the headliner can get the stage time they need and deserve!

  • "Real Music"

    by foreyes14 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

My friends and I were so excited about the concert, we talked the whole week about it. I was surprised on the amount of people who came to the show late and expected to find seats. The show started on time and the crew was able to change sets quickly. They needed more workers to help run food & drink stands faster. It was almost a family reunion out there seeing old friends from school.
