About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Wonderful event!

by Saymyname on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed the festival on Saturday! Erykah was off the chain! Wish she would've sang my song "Honey"! Chuck Brown was awesome, of course! He got the whole crowd up on their feet! The only boring performance was Raphael! BORING! Yeah, he has tons of energy, but he was not a good fit for this concert.

  • Summer Spirit Festival was great

  • ms badu was very good

by brenn on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

ms erykah Badu was robbed of time --she should have more performance time--the other performers should have been allotted four songs each--in between the band set-up mike epps should also have entertained--he was down as the host..

by SpottieOowW on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This event was phenomenal. I loved Erykah Badu's performance. My only regret is that she couldn't perform longer due to time constraints. Chrisette was amazing and so was Rapheal Saadiq....This concert was vibrant and packed with soul. I would recommend this artist line-up to anyone serious about music.

  • Erykah Badu is ???

by MissLex on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 2 out of 5

her opening acts seemed to have longer time than her, she barely performed 5 songs!!!!!! she did one song twice!!!! lawn seating was overpacked, it wasnt worth half of what i paid. very disappointed. raphael saadiq put the crowd to sleep.

  • Ehh...

by dawniegreene on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

I've been to this concert before and it was much better in previous years. I thought they scheduled too many acts for the allotted time, which prevented Erykah Badu from performing her entire set (the largest part of why I purchased tickets). Mike Epps was funny but was cursing way too much and was up way too long. He shouldn't have had an hour. Chuck Brown was good but wasn't up as long as the previous year. I was really disappointed with it and doubt I would purchase tickets again.

by Sweetstt on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 1 out of 5

The sound system was terrible could not hear anything need to upgrade to a better system where you can hear from any where in the park also need to install more TV throughtout the venue did not have a good time at all wish I could have got a refund over sold on the lawn was wacky

  • My Eyes are Green

by Verbalelation on 8/10/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

My girl ERRRYKAH rocked the house in Detriot. Me and six friends drove all the way from Milwaukee. I'm very impressed how Erykah has recreated herself to entertain her fans however staying true to her identity. We all had a great time at the concert and was not disappointed. It was worth the loooong ride due to the wrong turn we made "back there somewhere". Erykah, if you are reading this I believe we are your "biggest" fans. Most of us who came are Muslim and we had to participate in the concert to the fullest. For example, stepping out of the element of being pious and singing the lyrics to "Ain't No Fun". We had a wonderful time!!

  • Erykah Badu as all ways unforgettable

by Poogie on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Over all the show was amazing, I recommend everyone, when ever Erykah Badu is in the VA, DC, MD area Please go see her!!!!! You won't be disappointed. Chuck Brown and Lil Benny had the crowd rockin'. Raphael Saadiq was unforgettable he's still number one. Chrisette Michele did her thing as well. The show was more then enjoyable.

by NeoSoulLuva on 8/9/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I truly enjoyed myself at this performance. Erykah Badu has been one of my favorite artists since her debut and she continues to amaze me with her creative edge.

  • no doubt about it

chuck brown left the building leaving no about it, this is his house.

  • Good show!

    by SweetTea23 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The line up for the show was great! Great mix of artist. Rapheal and Chuck were my favorites! Only complaint was that I had lawn seats and the lawn area was extremely overcrowded. It seemed as if the tickets were oversold.

  • Summer Spirit Festival featuring Erykah Badu in MD

by TheBBWDoll on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I bought these tickets early because I knew it would be a good show. But I never imagined how great it could be. We unfortunatelly missed Foreign Exchange and Chrisette Michelle... but were able to catch the remaining acts. WOW.. I've never been a big fan of Chuck Brown and have avoided seeing him since moving to MD in 99, but he rocked it...had Lil Beenie and a few others show up and it was HOT! Rapheal Sadeek was great, high energy and sounded very good. His backup singers were on point and his bad was great also. But last but definetely not least....Ms. Erykah Badu. Now I have seen her about 4 times (this being my 5th now) and each show is different. I loved it!

  • Erykah was OUTSTANDING!!

    by runner01 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

  • Erykah Badu Show

by atlantajazz on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

Erykah Badu didn't get that much time to perform. We all were there because of her and she didn't even get time to give her show. I was so disappointed and will never attend another show at Merriweather Post Pavilion show.

  • Summer Spirit Festival was Awesome!!!

by Arleen on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

All of the performers were excellent except; Miss Techno Badu; she could have stayed home. I don't what has happened to her; she has awesome music but didn 't sing it to her advantage. She needs get rid of the techno it was awful; Chuck Brown should have been the headliner; he was great; Cresette Michele and Rafael were awesome; would love to see them again. Bring the festival back next year but leave Erykah at home.....

  • Erykah Killed it!

    by sweetpea808 on 8/9/09Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

As always, Miss Badu never lets her audience down! She brings you into her world and wraps you up in her style and class. This is my fifth time seeing her in concert and I hope to see her so many more times to come!

  • Erykah Badu was phanominal

    by 1210402 on 8/9/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

I had never seen Erykah Badu before only listen to her music by association; however experiencing her talent first hand "in person" oh my goodness! What a talent, gifted human being she was worth the wait.. Her lyrics makes you think and her music well it's in a Class all by itself! I am adding her to my collection of artist.. Sherell, I LOVED her performance went and purchased her CD today!!! her voice blew me away...... and my goodness my husband the native Washingtonian (SE) simply went balistic when Chuck came on, he had been to work as of 2 am came home got dress and we drove over and when this man hit the stage my husband hit the floor and never sat down. needlessly to say I had a quiet day today he was exhausted from having such a GOOD time!!!!
