About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Summer Festival Concert

by monetrose on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed myself, this was my first event there and I have to admit, the atmosphere alone is worth the trip! My only complaint was that I wish Erykah Badu sang just a little longer....other than that, it was great!

  • Badu Badid It!

by PDizzle on 8/10/09House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Erykah Badu has amazed me every time I have seen her! This was the 3rd time and it was a CHARM! Her set list is great - all the songs were fun and she re-worked them. She was energetic and her voice is bangin! I loved her outfit, the venue and had the most fun. The onyl bad thing I can say is that some of the songs run a little long and get too big band style - but other than that - I would go see it again tonight if I could!

  • The Best Summer show of 2009!!

by TLOCK on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The 2009 Summer Spirit Festival was a perfect mix of grown & sexy entertainment. The infusion of Erykah's, Chrisette's and Rapheal's eargasmic neo-soul along with the native sounds of Chuck Brown mixed with the comedy of Mike Epps was truly wonderful.

  • Off the hook!

by browncutieonduty on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great! I only have a few minor complaints. 1. The lawn section was terrible --they should of had barriers set up for walkways...getting to the consession stands during break times meant that you had to stop on, over folks blankets and squeeze thru chairs that were strolled all over the place. 2. The line up should of had sadiq before chuck brown. After chuck browns performance sadiq was too mellow and couldnt get the crowd pumped. 3. Erykah needed more time on her set!

  • Spirit Festival was off the Hook!

    by Bernie7709 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was great and worth whatever price paid! Each group brought its own flavor to the stage and had us on our feet! Wish Erykah had more time to do what the lady does best! Mike Epps is a crazzzzzyyy dude!!! Chrissette Michele can sing her ass off and Raphael Siddiq did us well also!! Chuck Brown and crew was jammin and had the house rockin! MISS ERYKAH DID HER THANG!!....CAN U DIG IT??

  • Erykah Badu and Chuck Brown were the BEST!!!

by Naysie on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Erykah's voice is amazing as well as her interaction with the audience. Chuck Brown with Little Bennie really got the crowd jamming!!!! You can't go wrong with Chuck!

  • E. Badu 5 Stars - Chuck Brown Ruined show

    by 2seeEBadu on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

Erykah Badu was amazing as always. She was the intended headliner, but Chuck Brown and his go-go band tried to take over the show. Chuck was late getting on stage and then overstayed his welcome by about 30 mins. Which then meant that Erykah Badu had less time. I did not pay $50 for a lawn ticket to see Chuck Brown - who is performing for free this weekend. The promoter of the show should have pulled his mic or just played music over him to get him off the stage, instead of cutting off E. Badu 45 mins. into her show because the shows ending time was 11:30 pm. and the promoter didn't want to get fined. I hope that E. Badu atleast got her money and that Chuck Brown got fined.

  • Erykah Was Phenomenal....but.....

by Soulchyld on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent show, Erykah's set was too short! (Perhaps because Chuck Brown and Raphael ate into her time). However, loved her outfit! I totally get her artistry now and will never miss another Erykah show! EVER!

  • Rapahel Sadiq's Performance was untouchable

    by LiveMusicLover2 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the entire venue. It was one big party at Merriweather, all had a blast. The best performance was given by Raphael, loved his old school/contemporary music! Erykah Badu was suprisingly pleasant and entertaining, as sometimes she can get spacy. Michelle Chrisette was a bit boring for me and Chuck Brown with Little Benny and the ladies performing with Chuck was breathtaking. I was on the lawn and it was one big party, we even loved the DJ music in between sets. Looking forward to next year's festival, it was amazing. thanks

  • Summerfest was soulful and spirited

by DIVAinc on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome show...outstanding performances had by all...some true entertainers hit the stage and displayed their talents across the board...one thing though, hosts should never indulge while working, host was funny as usual but became lewd and obnoxious upon becoming intoxicated.

  • Mixed bag

by ssuperstarr on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was great! The fans, not so much. I love Chrisette, Rapheal, and Erykah. I'll pay money to see any of them each and every chance that I get because they never disappoint. Pairing Chuck Brown up with them was a huge mistake. Don't get me wrong, Chuck is wonderful and I appreciate his music. HIS fans are a different breed altogether. They could have cared less for the other performers and cared even less (if that's possible) for those who wanted to see the other performers. Also, Merriweather needs to fix the speakers on the left side of the stage. I paid money to read lips on the jumbotron. ThanQ!

  • Summer Spirit Festival

by MoIndigo on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

This event was way too long. E.Badu hit the state at 10:30pm and the show started at 5:30pm... I could have done with out chuck brown.... although he did well we can see him locally anytime.......

  • All 4 acts were great

by COOLV on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoy all 4 acts. I was not impressed with Mike Epps however. It appeared to me that the lawn section was oversold.

  • The Spirit Festival was Awesome !!!!!!

    by demi9502 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Mike Epps is a fool he was hilarious. Chuck Brown was the best. He still got it going on. He had the crowd going from beginning to end. Chrisette Michele did wonderful. Her set didnt last long enough. Rapheal Sadiqq was energetic. Erykah Badu wasn't her greatest. I think she could have done a lot better. Alot of people started leaving before her set ended . The energy was great the weather was awesome. I really enjoyed it. I would go again. It was worth the trip.

  • What An Awesome Event!!

    by LAD01 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was absolutely great. Every one of the performer did an excellent job and I really enjoyed each and every one of them. I wasn't sure about attending because I have seen quite a few shows this summer so I figured I really did not need to go to yet a another show but I am estactic that I decided to purchase those tickets!! I cannot wait for the next line-up; Merriweather was just great!!

I really enjoyed the concert. I had lawn seating as I always do when I visit Merriweather post pavilion. I show line up was wonderful. Especially Chuck Brown and Chrisette Michelle, and Eryca Badu.

  • Ran a little long, but the acts were great

    by SimplyRed29 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, this was a solid show featuring Foreign Exchange, Chrisette Michele, Chuck Brown, Raphael Saadiq and Erykah Badu. Mike Epps was hilarious as host and even more so after having some drinks backstage. I saw a few children in the audience, but parents should be warned that he did not keep the comedy PG-13. I thought having "Godfather of Go-Go" Chuck Brown in the middle of the lineup was a bit odd, and it definitely changed the tone of the show. While Chuck's performance was probably the highlight of the night, with audience members out of their seats dancing the entire time, the other artists in the lineup were of a mellow variety, and his performance didn't really fit. He also went waayy over his allotted time, cutting into Raphael and Erykah's performances. I was upset after not being able to hear some of Ms. Badu's classics (she didn't even get to do "Tyrone!"), I understood that she simply ran out of time.

The summer spirit show was like that. I enjoyed every performance.

  • Chuck Brown blew the roof off the pavilion

by byrdmoni on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The Summer Spirit Festival was great. Alot of people came out to the concert and the Merriweather was prepared. I like the fact thet they added more food stands, bathrooms, porter johns etc... to accomadate the large crowds.
