About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Summer Spirit Festival was well worth the money!

    by TGirl55 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The entire show was full of entertainment. Mike Epps was an exceptional host and very hilarious. Chrisette Michelle and Erykah Badu have never let me down with their performances. I have viewed them both on more than one occassion.

  • Spirit Festival 2009

by kemitsoul on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the show was remarkable. Well coordinated, good mix of talent and it ran smoothly. It was my first time seeing Michel Lisette & Rafeal Sadiq, I was not disapointed. Being a DC native, I am very familiar with Chuck Brown and as usual, he delivered! Eryka Badu was amazing! My only complaint is that she did not remain on stage long enough. She was the headliner and the act I came to see, I spent 7 hours waiting to see her and I feel that she did not spend enough time on stage. Otherwise the show was excellent!

  • Less Chuck Brown

by nogogo on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a fan of Go-Go. With that being said I thought Chuck B. was on the stage way too long. If he was going to get a majority of the playing time he should have been the headliner. I would have liked to see more of Eryka, but I think he cut into Eryka's time. Chrisette Michelle was great. Raphael Saadique was good although I wish he would have spent more time on the Toni Tony Tone songs. Mike Epps was hilarious!

  • Erykah Is BADDDDD

    by Judy53 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great show!!! This is the first show in a long time that I've been too that I enjoy every artist. The crowd was great also!

  • HOT

by Shannoncam on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was HOT! EVERYBODY was GREAT but CHUCK BROWN and E. BADU shut it DOWN!

  • Giving Each Entertainer the Equal Amount of Time

by AngelaWas on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The overall show was great, but personally I think that there were too many artists booked to perform, which, did not allow the "Main Attraction" (Ms. Badu) to perform long enough. I sat in my seat after the show was over just to hear the remarks of the audience, and guess what, my assessment of too many booked artists does not allow the "Head Liner" and/ or "Main Attraction too much time to perform. Some people that arrived late felt that they were cheated because their sole purpose for coming to the festival was to see "Ms. Badu". Well, there you have it, my views and/or remarks. Sincerely, Angela

  • Chuck Brown made the show

by msfreeze on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

I probably would have enjoyed the show if I had sat in the pavillion. Sitting on the lawn in the back was the worst experience. People were on top of each because there was barely any space to sit. The performances were o.k. Chuck was the best, Chrisette Michelle was pretty good also. Raphael Sadiq's performance seemed weak and he probably should not have come on right after Chuck Brown. Erykah Badu's performance was mediocre, but to me, nothing to really write home about. What happened to Mike Epps? It seemed as though he didn't finish hosting the show. Too many drinks I suppose.

  • GREAT SHOW!

    by slake612 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

There were no mediocre acts. This was a lineup of some of the most talented artists out today. If you have a chance to catch any of these acts, please do! You won't be disappointed.

  • Jamming with the folks

by SCarre on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Ok I have to say its been a long time since I've had a chance to par-tay with a list of artists like this. A really, really long time. Before I begin I must say that I'm not a DC native. This is important cause then my next statement, go-go is generally not my thing, now makes sense. However this Saturday I have to say my best dancing/cheering was sparked by none other than Mr. Chuck Brown. I cannot believe just how fabulous he was. Those who are ultra familiar with his work were already partying before he even hit the chord of his first song. It took me a minute but once I realized his fabulousness, I was hooked.....I loved it! Erykah Badu did her thing too. She sounded fab AND put on a good show, very entertaining and did a very nice blend of old and new music (Although I have to say I'm a die hard, first 2 albums fan!) She was well worth the wait. Mike Epps, what can I say? He's a nut, we all know, but his set was funny as hell! Chrisette Michele did her thing as usual. She usually brings nothing less than fabulousness (is that a word?) and did not disappoint. I can't wait until she's headlining her own show. Raphael Saadik took a little getting used to. There was one part of his set where he removed the mike for an extended period of time but his lips were moving....huh? Foreign Exchange...well ummmm I'm not sure what to think. Maybe they needed some more warm up time, cause I've heard their music and they are generally pretty good. YahZarah was fire of course....I just love her. So great venue, great partying/drama free crowd and excellent performances from most. A win, in my book!

  • Summer Spirit Festival featuring Erykah Badu

by malaika on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The event was more than I expected. it took awhile to forage through the traffic but once we got to our seats , it was cool. Chuck Brown had everyone on their feet. I enjoyed Rafael Siddiqui's dance moves and style of dancing in general. Michelle was fun too although I missed most of her show coz of traffic. Mike Epps was hilarious and soo much fun, good job as an MC. I was little dissapointed with Erykah, she was supposed to be the hi-lite of the show but didnt perform to my expectations. Overall no regrets, it was a nice ,fun summer outing. Would do it again!

  • Erykah Badu was amazing

by CyCiPo on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was great! The Foreign Exchange, Chrisette Michele, Rapheal Saadiq, Chuck Brown and Erykah Badu were amazing. The only problem was that the organizers cut Erykah's performance short... We were home pretty early.

  • Nice Event

    by Nette46 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Being my first time at the Merriweather Pavillion it was a nice experience. Very crowded, the entertainers were great. Erykah did not stay on long enough, how could she do a show and don't sing "You Better Call Tyrone"

  • Chuck is the Man

by Foxe on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed the concert. I enjoyed everyone of the Artists. I was little disappointed in Erykah Badu performance. I am a Erykah Badu fan and have been since she came to the scene, however, and still a fan. They were the bomb. I would like to get some free tix to see Chuck again and again. Chuck, Chuck and Lil Benny they were the concert. I could just could seen them and been just as happy. They were totally awesome.

  • Absolutely Awesome!!!

by UmmTaheerah on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was awesome!! I would give the best performance overall to Raphael Sadiq because he hit R&B, Classical, Rock and Jazz and he gave a show with instruments, as well as the inclusion of the band, back ground singers, etc. He's a hidden Marvin Gaye. Erica Badu, of course, was phenominal and a classic act in itself. Michele Crisette is a new artist and I enjoyed her as well. Her voice is in a class by itself and she has yet to reach her peak as an artist. Her stage performance was ok. Chuck Brown - - thank you for allowing me to revert back to my teenage years in an atmosphere of loving human beings. Thank you for being responsible for my husband coming to his very first go-go!!! Terific lineup. Great vendors!!! Traffic moved wonderfully at the end of the show. I shared a wonderful evenign with my husband and 2 other wonderful friends.

  • So So...

by blackscholar on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

It was decent. I've seen all of the acts before and I have seen them do better jobs. Erykah came on way too late. I was tired and ready to go by the time she got on stage. Overall, it was a decent show.

  • What Neo???

by CurlyLocz on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

This turned into a go-go instead of being a neosoul concert.

  • Summerfest 09 was hot!

by QuitePleased on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Highlights -I really enjoyed Chrisette Michelle's set. The girl is talented and sounds even better live. Absolutely loved it! -Chuck Brown & friends TORE IT UP!!! Everybody was on their feet dancing the whole time. It was great to see the crowd enjoying themselves like that. Glad Lil Benny stopped through. It was hot! They did all the old favorites. Not so great -The show didn't start on time -The time it took between the sets was a little long Overall - It was a great show. I would definately go back again. I had a great time.

  • What a concert!!!

  • Erykah & Chuck Brown w/Lil'Benny STOLE the Show

by Preciouss on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

This woman is phenomenal! Her unerringly synthesizer-like voice & beautiful melodious tones were mesmerizing.
