About

Erykah Badu, one of the world’s most revered singers, is widely credited as being the godmother of neo-soul. Badu’s blend of hip-hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, and has earned her a total of four Grammy nominations. Pitchfork described the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist’s 1997 debut album Baduizm as an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement.” The triple-platinum album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and lead single “On & On” won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Badu’s enduring legacy was cemented on the road, where she has sung to sold-out crowds on multiple worldwide tours. The R&B legend has released five critically-acclaimed studio albums, and has been featured on hit songs by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.

  • Chuck Brown rules, Badu does not

    by 06372817 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Chuck Brown once again proved why DC is his town! Amazing set, and what topped it all was that everybody knew the words to Chuck's songs, so the crowd sounded louder than Chuck did. There's something to be said about a vibe that cuts across everyone in the crowd, and the word "amazing" doesn't do it justice. I wish someone had told Raphael Saadiq that he was playing to a DC crowd and not a Baltimore crowd. All he did was shout out to Baltimore, and thus, his response was underwhelming. Aside from that, he's got a hell of a live show. He's an extremely underappreciated performer. The guy can sing, can play, can write a song, can work a crowd [with the exception of shouting out the wrong city], and he's so smooth. Its a shame he isn't getting the attention he truly deserves. Especially with his new album "The Way I See It" being as HOT as it is! One song into her set was enough for me, my wife and our friends. We bailed on the Queen of Fake and prayed for everyone else who stuck around to see her that they may gain taste in music, and see her crap for what it really is; nothing more than a waste of time. Where's Jill Scott when you need her?

  • Great show interrupted

    by Fan2101 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

The artists' performances were great. Unfortunately the show started late but maybe this is typical. It seemed like Chuck Brown's performance ran far too long. I think the combination of the late start and Chuck Brown's long, seemingly endless act cut Erykah's performance short. The event coordinators (I'm guessing) turned on the music to get her off the stage. Very disappointing, as she was the main attraction. I'm giving it a four because the overall talent was phenomenal.

  • Erykah Badu was the BOMB

    by tvnumber1fanofEB on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was the bomb. Everything was great, the set up, being able to be outside and/or inside, the time of the day was perfect, the entertainers and in which order they were performing, OMG Erykah. She did a show. This event was priceless.....All thumbs Up.....I love Erykah Badu. I am a true and loyal fan of EB. I always wanted to see her live and nothing about this show I would had change. Lastly saying this lady's voice was beautiful and the other entertainers just made the show BOMB

    by Dawn6369 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I had a great time during the Summer Spirit Festival. Chrisette Michelle's voice was outstanding; Chuck Brown got everyone out of their seats and Raphael Siddiuq and Erykah Badu were worth the wait!

  • 1 Go-Go Apple can spoil

by DeeOne on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 2 out of 5

DC definitly loves Chuck B and GO-Go music, however I dont really care for dropping 200+ to hear (10$) house music. No disrepect it is what it is.. My apologies to Erykah, and Raphael great artists, great venue, wrong crowd.

  • Erykah is Ahead of her time!!!!!

  • Too Much Fun!!

by Wensycal on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

Absolutely enjoyed myself. I will be here again next year if they have great acts like this!

  • Chuck Baby don't give a ***** - lol

by Waterfalls on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

Chuck still has it, he performed the longest, brought more to the show - havin Lil' Benny there, what a performance!!!!! Everybody did their thing, Chrisette opened and Erykah closed it. I've never been to a concert that lasts that long, but trust and believe it was well worth it. Raphael's band had so much energy, he still sounds soooo good. My Gurl Erykah did her thang - she just wasn't on long enough, and Mike Epps - is a natural born fool - lol, he kept me and my friends laughing, and when he was talking about his friend w/the arm, I almost had an accident, I just couldn't stop laughing. If this is something that happens every year - I'll be there. The sea of people sitting on the lawn was crazy, I've never seen anything like it before. Bottom line - the show was off the hook!!!!!!

  • Badu was Awesome

by partybrax on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

An awesome show. Mike Epps was the PERFECT host for the show. His performance was awesome too. I had not been to the Merriweather Post to a show for a long time. This show was just amazing. So many great performances by so many great artists. Keep it the same and I'll be back next year.

  • Spirit Festival

    by Syxx76 on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 3 out of 5

The show was great except for the fact that Erykah Badu only performed for about 30 mins. She should have been given more time to perform considering she was the headliner. All in all I had a great time.

  • Nice... I love Erykah

by ShiShi on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

I am not from the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area so I'm not crazy over Chuck Brown However, I must say that he was great. When he came on stage the entire crowd stood and danced. I've never seen so many people grooving in daylight and really "gettin' down!" Chrisette was ok. I love her voice, but I guess I must've been too far back to really get into her performance. Raphael Saadiq is an awesome producer and writer, but it was too late in the day and not enough people recognized the music he sang until he started singing from his Tone Toni Tony days. We waited until super late, the crowd was growing restless, but Badu finally came out at about 10:34 p.m. I love her music. She gave a great performance as always. Not too many people know her latest CD, but I love it. Of course, she performed from every CD. Overall, all the artist are REAL artist. Nice perfomance.

  • Erykah was brilliant and rocked da beat machine!

  • Summer Spirit Festival featuring Erykah Badu

by SunshineSS on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 5 out of 5

The summer spirit concert was "excellent". It was one of the best concerts that I have been too in a long while and I frequent many. Me and my girlfriend had a fabulous time. We loved all of the artist on the line-up, sound system was awesome, and the set-up time between acts was quick. In addition, having a comedian like “Mike Epps” host the event added a very nice touch to the entire evening. He was very funny and really entertained the crowd. My feedback for improvement are as follows: 1.) Please make sure the artist are welled informed that the audience is a “Washington, DC” crowed vs. a “Baltimore” crowd. Raphael Saadiq kept referring to B-More and Baltimore and several people around us (including myself) were annoyed. I think he was confused because the event was held in Maryland. 2.) The order of the artist could have been a little better. In my opinion, I think Raphael Saadiq should have performed before Chuck Brown and directly after Chrisette Michele. Chuck Brown is a very tough act to follow since the majority of his songs are upbeat. Raphael’s sound is a little more laid-back; therefore, I think would have been a better compliment coming after Chrisette Michele. ~Sunshine

  • Great Birthday Concert

by MizzR on 8/10/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - ColumbiaRating: 4 out of 5

All of the performers were really great. Too much down time between the acts. Erykah Badu didn't get to do all of the songs she wanted to because she was rushed off the stage towards the end of the night.
