El Monstero – a Tribute To Pink Floyd in Concert

Many tribute bands are dedicated to the music and visuals of Pink Floyd, but few are as ambitious as El Monstero – a Tribute to Pink Floyd. Based in St. Louis, the troupe pairs an arena-caliber light and video show with meticulous attention to detail: They once borrowed the actual inflatable pig owned by Pink Floyd, and have also been known to hire a helicopter to fly over the crowd to provide the proper sound effects for the music. Their onstage presence certainly earns them the tag "The Definitive U.S. Pink Floyd Tribute Experience," as the band's arresting musicianship captures the evocative emotional arcs of the David Gilmour and Roger Waters era of Pink Floyd.

Near the end of the year, the group books an annual run of shows at popular indoor St. Louis venue the Pageant, a 2,300-capacity space that's adjacent to the Delmar Loop. They also regularly do out-of-town gigs in Springfield and Kansas City, and they've collaborated live with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra on bigger concerts that add majestic flourishes to Pink Floyd's music. In recent years, El Monstero has also branched out for summer shows at the St. Louis–area outdoor venue the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre.

El Monstero – a Tribute To Pink Floyd Background

It's tough to beat the pedigree of the musicians in El Monstero. The group was founded by members of the St. Louis rock band Stir, who decided to do a covers show around Thanksgiving 1999 that drew 900 people. From there, El Monstero continued to play gigs around the holidays, even as their personnel evolved: Stir bassist Kevin Gagnepain stayed aboard and was joined by members of nationally signed bands the Urge (drummer John Pessoni, keyboardist Bill Reiter) and Kingofthehill (vocalist/guitarist Jimmy Griffin) — all of whom had continued to hone their craft in other St. Louis bands — as well as a group of talented local instrumentalists, including vocalist/guitarist Mark Thomas Quinn, and backing singers. Together, El Monstero is a testament to the power of Pink Floyd, and to the power of community.

  • Awesome venue; awesome show

by Mobrickhouse on 1/5/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first time to El Monstero and both my husband and I were blown out of the water. We were both a bit speculative after having recently been to the Roger Waters Wall Tour. Let me tell you what....next time we might just skip Roger Waters and go straight to El Monstero. LOVED the stage show....drum majors, strippers who made me want to become a gymnast, AWESOME back up vocalist.....the list goes on. Vocals were right on the money as was ALL of the band. I can't praise this show enough. We WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR.

  • El Monstero is my favorite concert of every year!

by IlliniGal on 1/1/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The guys in el monstero kick it up a notch every year, the show is incredible. I have seen many Pink Floyd tribute bands, including the Australian Pink Floyd, and El Monstero blow them out of the water. Highly recommend seeing them soon, you won't be disappointed!

  • El Monstero was Great!

by MaryLKay on 12/30/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I sat in the balcony and loved where I sat. I had never been to the Pagent for anything, so I was very impressed with the venue and absolutely loved the concert. It's amazing how great the group is and I will definitely come back next year.

  • El Monstero Different but good this year

    by Bing66 on 12/30/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

The show was much less flashy or showy this year, but the music was solid as ever. I'm not a huge fan of in-the-round staging, but it was cool. The set list was good, and the musicianship and singing were great as usual. The highschool drummers were a blast to watch. I really like the display of all the local talent. If anything, the loadmoth people in the audience pissed me off by talking through the first several songs... But, it is a party...

Loved this talented band! Awesome. Cant wait for next year

  • by Anonymous on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

not as good as the last 5 years, but still pretty phenomenal!

  • El Monstero-Fantastic again!

    by Gypsy01744 on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

This was the second year that my son and I saw El Monstero! We are making plans now for next December and bringing some friends and family to experience it!

  • El Monstero Rawked!

by MattyHo on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Once again, I was flabbergasted by the sound quality, blown away by the musical talent, excited with the vibe of the crowd and I wish I would have bought tickets for one of the other nights so I could have seen the pole dancer on the other side of the stage.

  • by CarlaV on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

El Monstero continues to be one of the best local talent shows I have ever seen. I average seeing at least 3 of the shows each year, sometimes more. This was my third show for this year. While I still maintain that their show on Christmas night has been the best show for the last several years, other than the guest singer's microphone not working on "Have a Cigar" for the first half of the song, it was a very good show. Must admit I am still a fan of the previous years' style more than this year's; however, the music continues to be THE BEST EVER!!!!!

  • El Monstero was "Stiffer" than 2009

    by rwl1959 on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

The first half of the concert did not start off as smooth in that songs did not transition one into another as well as in the past. Some simply ended with pauses in between. Yet, their music talent is amazing. Second half was great. Did not enjoy the stage as well. Still, El Monstero was exceptional despite that limitation.

  • El Monstero is awesome, stage seating sucks!

by learndahardway on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 3 out of 5

For the price we paid for the stage seats you would think that there would be something really special about them. We were looking at the back of the whole show though. The whole time we were trying to figure out what was going on up front on the stage. I would have rather had general admission and stood the whole time. At Least I would have seen the show! I give 5 stars to the band, "0" stars to the stage seating.

  • El Monstero rules

    by Gibson64 on 12/29/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

We had on-stage seating. It's always a great show, but the onstage seating was incredible. I always liked the balcony seats, but thought it would be worth trying these at least once. I hope they do it again. It was unbelievable. The guys (and girlls) really gave a great show, and plenty of special attentition was given to the fans on the stage.

  • by Anonymous on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 3 out of 5

I missed the old stage where the musicians could move around more and put on a better show. People sitting behind the band seemed to take away from the band. Overall the event was still good, and the music was still great, but the stage wasn't the same..

  • Best show!!!

by Anonymous on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I've been the last few years and I think this year was the best!! Loved the how the stage was. I had tickets for the last night. Just AWESOME!!

  • el monstero is well worth it

by michellemichelle on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Show was very good and the musicians very talented. A must-see every year!

  • .El Monstero amazing vocals as always ! ! !

by Hisbaby on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

They have amazing vocals but they lost some of their originality without the show they usually perform. The costumes, wizard of oz and sitting down at the end and being personable for the last few songs. However this won't deter me from going every year !

  • by Anonymous on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

It was great. I can't wait to go back next year. Eclipse, Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb were amazing.

  • by Pigfan18 on 12/28/10The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Music was great a lot of old Pink Floyd music you don't hear everyday. We all enjoyed the Pacific drummer group and the dancers, ballerina all of it.

  • always the most fun concert of the year

Loved it, as always! I like the band on the traditional stage better than the round stage they had this year but overall it didn't change the fact that I loved it! Looking forward to next year and Celebration Day in February.
