DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:
Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."
"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."
"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."

DBT were their usual awesome self, and Shonna was particularaly adorable this night. By the end of the show she had to lean against the wall to balance herself after all the shots of jack that Patterson poured down everyone's throats. But that didn't stop her bass groove! Cooley was on fire and Patterson was shot out of a cannon. The band did tend to focus on more of their rocking songs, like Shut your mouth and get your ass on the plane, Get Downtown, Righteous Path, Birthday Boy. We were even treated to a couple of unreleased songs, Girls who smoke and Cooley's soon to be released single Woman is a loving thing (or something like that). The bad part was the prices of beer, $6 for PBR! And the fact that there was another venue having a show in the basement. whenever there was a low point in DBT's music, you could hear the bass thumping through the floor from the rap show downstairs.
We had to leave after 2 songs. The music was so loud that every strum of the guitar or beat of the drums felt like someone was driving a spike into our heads. We see concerts all the time, and frequently at this same venue and I have never experienced anything like this. The sound people and event staff didn't care and so we spent $140 for 10 minutes worth of agony. It didn't help that some sleazy character in the crowd stole my wife's iphone, adding yet another insult on top. I won't be going back to the Vic and I definitely won't be going to any more Drive0by Truckers shows.
Great setlist.....great energy....everything I hoped it would be. Cooley and Patterson brought it and Shonna was amazing too!!! Wish they would have played a few more from "Decoration Day," and really wanted to hear gravity's gone, but they'd have to have a 10 hour concert to satisfy my craving!!! I have been a fan for a long time and this was the first time I was able to make it to one of their shows and now I just can't wait until they are back in Chicago. Amazing group!!!
The band was great, the sound was not which was disappointing. Get the sound right and this would have been a terrific show.
Langhorne Slim was awesome. DBT is back to the Rock N' Roll that made me fall in love with them years ago!!!
DBT was great as usual but the sound at the Vic was pretty bad. That's been the issue with the last few shows I've seen there so I know it's the venue and not the band. There was no distinctions between the instruments and everything sounded mushed together at times. The piano/keyboard was virtually non-existent. So, my recommend is based on the band's performance and not the sound.
Hands down the greatest show I have ever attended. They played 28 songs, including an 8 song encore. Played a lot of older stuff and really mixed it up. AMAZING
I am a huge Lucero fan, my boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. All of the bands were fantastic.
Excellent! The whole evening was wonderful. Started out with tasty Cheese steakes at Carmens in the Reading Teminal. Next stop was the Irish bar next door. Had a Country Western Band which I thought was a great unexpected intro to the evening. Met some nice Truckers fans from Harrisburg. Got right up front when the doors opened. Opening bands were both really good. I liked Langhonre Slim my guest liked Lucero. We had saved our energy thru the openers so we could rock out with the Truckers. Good thing we did because we needed it. Mix of some brand new, some old, and some in the middle. We had listened to the new album for the first time as we drove over from Jersey. Thought we would hear "The Wig He Made Her Wear" because of the holiday. Hopefully next time. Set was awsome but seemed a little short. Thought there might have been a Philly curfew or something. Shoul not have worried as the "encore" was 6 or 7 songs of rock with a strange dramatic ending.
The show was great! Langhorne Slim and Lucero rocked the house before the Truckers came on. Once they did, they did a great job of closing out the night. An excellent show!
only first band was enjoyable to watch because the other two were way too loud.
DBT may be the greatest three-guitar band ever! Almost supernatural in their virtuosity. Perhaps with the exception of Clapton, Derek Trucks and Robert Cray, but they were not a real band, tight and interwoven in their sound as one that's played together for almost twenty years. The drummer and keyboard were great; the bass player adequate. Great playlist. The first two bands were good, but nothing compared to DBT, who finally are headliners... My concern was with the House of Blues accoustics. I sat on the only level which had seats: front row, balcony. Great seats visually. Quite comfortable as well. But the accoustics were SIMPLY AWFUL. Even with ear plugs!! Way too loud, way too much bass amplification, way too echoey, lyrics became just noise. In short, WAY TOO DISTORTED AND LOUD. Upon moving down to the mezzanine and first floor (standing room only; no seating) the sound was MUCH BETTER! Far less distortion. Lyrics were even discernable. Although I have not been to the Showcase venue in Foxborough, I noticed they have the same type of set up: open standing room on the first floor and seats upstairs. It makes me hesitant to go to any of these new venues with this type of configuration, as I need a seat to enjoy the show. Now that rock and roll means PUMP UP THE VOLUME to deafening levels, I fear that my concert going days are numbered!!
Having seen the Drive By Truckers several times over the past few years I can say without hesitation....this one was a little weak! The sound was overblown to the point of distortion making us unable to tell one instrument from the next or have any idea of vocals! As always, the electric factory was FANTASTIC as was the staff. I enjhoy the venu so much It almost does not matter whom the act is...I just like the electric factory as a great night out! Conclusion,We just caught a bad night for the band,it happens. can't wait to see them again and We are already looking forward to our next Electric Factory experience!
Took a few songs for the sound guys to get everything sounding just right, but the band rocked as usual! They played a great, long set which made me feel like I got more than my money's worth! Great selection of merchandise. I will be seeing them again!
LUCERO was absolutely amazing! Drive By Truckers played a really long set and were extremely gracious to the fans. I definately recommend this event! The Electric Factory is a very large venue with 2 floors and several bars. You can get a good view of the stage from pretty much anywhere in the venue, which was great!
The drive-by truckers are by far the best life band I've seen. This was only the second time I saw them but they were great yet again. Langhorne Slim and Lucero were great lead ups to the great finale. I would strongly recommend all three to anyone I know.
Unlike many fans there, I was very much NOT a fan of langhorne Slim - their music was boring and contrived. I mean, really, do you really need 9 guys in a band when 3-4 of them don't even play on most songs? I couldn't have been more bored by their music...Lucero, I'd like to hear more of you...nice job guys! Drive-By Truckers...hmmm. Always been a fan but these guys went in a jam-band, autobiographical (e.g., patterson hood 18 wheels of love, etc.) direction tonight that I didn't enjoy (admittedly I'm not a jam-band fan, never have been). Nice variety of new/old songs and solid playing by all. Great Atmosphere and backdrop. It's interesting to see the blending of personalities in the band on display...Mike Cooley's "too cool for skool" mentality, Shonna's sweet supportive shy style, Patterson Hood's accessibility to the crowd and genuine humility, yet the three main players here seemed to mostly ignore their colleagues (keyboard, slide guitar, drums). It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the studio recording, or in writing sessions...:)
After years of watching the truckers chew up and spit out good opening acts, Lucero established themselves as a live band with few peers. The truckers are a finely tuned r-n-r machine, with a back catalogue so rich they can skip DOZENS of classic songs (1 song each from d-day, and dirty south) and still leave you feeling as if you've missed nothing. They rule!
Stellar night of music. Blown away by Lucero. Seeing the Truckers live for the 5th time I am in awe of how good they have gotten - by far my favorite rock band. Slim did a nice job as well.
