DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:
Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."
"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."
"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."
The Truckers always deliver live. Great songs played with real passion and a sense of rock 'n' roll abandon.
I've been to a lot of concerts, but this was by far the best ever. Drive by Truckers were phenomenal. Rocked the house like no other band . They rocked more than Metallica.when I saw them a few years back. I know -they're not a metal band, but they do play kick*** music and I was not disappointed. I will no doubt be going to a lot more of their shows when they come close to my area. Also got lucky enough to see them after the concert when they were loading up to leave.-AWESOME!
Another great DBT show, they never disappoint. Cooley is an unsung hero of today's Rock n Roll.
This band rocks with a truly original sound and style. I love the writing styles of both Hood and Cooley and the way the band sounds together. When you see them play live they leave you feeling like you not only got your moneys worth, but like you just had a nice three hour visit with your good friends from Athens, Ga. It was a great show!! Keep rockin' and come back to Baltimore soon!
It may be my only time seeing a showing at the Recher Theatre (I'm not from the area) but it was most certainly worth the long road trip.
Although I came to see Lucero, the other bands were very good. Lucero put on an amazing show and their new CD is probably my new favorite. Great interaction with the audience and great environment for a show.
Outstanding show... the encores were as long as some headliners entire show....WOW !!!!
Langhorne Slim was incredible, even through the relentless chatter of those who came to see Drive-By Truckers. If most of the DBT fans could have stopped talking, they would have enjoyed a great show. I did stay to listen to the "headliners" and was mildly impressed by a couple songs, but not really swayed by what seemed a lackluster perrformance. Some girl did pass out and throw up all over the restroom, which was mildly entertaining, especially when some drunk guy tried to force his way past security to get into the restrooms. And there was a really tall guy there who looked like Chewbaca...that was cool. Langhorne and band were awesome!!! Dude on the banjo rocked!
Though I'd have loved for DBT to have indulged in a few more of their earlier songs (so much fun to sing along), I have to say the show was absolutely great; work from the new album (The Big To-Do) has the promise, energy and raw lyric power of so many of their "signature" songs. And OH how I love to see Patterson Hood smile! Langhorne Slim was a welcome surprise (I'd never heard him before), and a perfect complement to the evening's headline entertainment. Also very energetic....I've never seen anyone shred a banjo quite like Slim's guy. It's true! It's true! (You'll know what I mean by that if you were there.) In short, lots of mutual chemistry from crowd to stage and back again....exactly what a show like theirs should be.
Awesome. The Truckers always put on agreat show but this one was amazing.
Having just buried my father on Monday in Richmond, I wasn't sure how this show would hit me. The Truckers lyrics remind me so much of my Southern heritage, my travels of the South, and many happy family memories that I was sure a wave of emotions would confront me at the show. Emotions? Joy, celebration, the healing powers of RAWK! The Truckers came out swinging, and the crowd was with them the entire time! The Big To-Do material was well received, and many in the crowd were already singing along to songs like "This Fucking Job," "Birthday Boy," and "Drag the Lake Charlie." As always, the band was super tight! As much fun as the crowd was having, I think the band was having even more. Patterson and Mike both seemed to be hamming it up for the photographers in the crowd. As they have always done, the Truckers have another great opening band for this tour. Do yourself a favor and arrive early enough to see Langhorne Slim. While not the full-on assault of DBT, the band's music put out a great vibe to get things rolling. Kudos to the sound person at the Norva for getting the mix right for two distinct sounding groups. Finally, thank you DBT for not only having a great mix of merchandise, but for keeping your prices so reasonable. Don't miss out on the Wes Freed signed poster!
I guess this was in support of the new album, The Big To-Do, although the DBT played all many old favorites as well. These included 72 (This Highway's Mean), Women Without Whiskey, Marry Me, Hell No I Ain't Happy. They closed with Shut Up And Get On The Plane, which just about blew the roof off the NorVa. Speaking of the closing, the encore lasted nearly as long as the main show! I think the band stood up there for maybe 7 or 8 songs, and Patterson Hood seemed like possessed. Highlights included all the great old songs mentioned above, but every song they played off the new one as well. I've had the CD for more than two weeks now - it's a great, great, great CD imo - but even so I was surprised how songs like The Fourth Night Of My Drinking and Drag The Lake Charlie were just brought to life last night. Great songs. DBT also ripped through This Fucking Job, which I knew was going to be fun and they surely did not disappoint. Mike Cooley's Get Downtown just absolutely rocked, what a great song. The only hint of downside to this show was this. Another great song on this CD is (It's Gonna Be) I Told You So, which I felt was rushed. That's a beautiful song and, imo, stands on its own two feet just fine if played straight up.
Mix of old and new songs at very high volume. AWESOME.
Drive-By Truckers played an amazing two and a half hour show. They played several songs from their new album, but also played many classic DBT tunes like 'Whiskey without Women" and "Let There Be Rock" from their "Southern Rock Opera" albums. Their energy was amazing, it was almost like it was the last night on the road. They were loose, playful and seemed like they were in awe themselves of the intenese loyalty the band has. For an independent group to have the audience singing loudly the words must be a great feeling. DBT are the new southern rock, but it's without the simplistic chest-beating of the 70's era. It's as if Keith Richards grew up in Alabama during the 1970's and read a lot of Flannery O'Connor filtered through a heavy dose of 70's white trash rock and roll. Their lyrics are about real life and speak of the southern way of life in modern terms. Meth addiction, alcoholism, racism are all part of this southern ethos without much romanticism. The sweet moments occur on a personal level, as in "Daddy Needs a Drink" and "Marry Me". The DBT offer rock and roll in a way that captures the southern experience because it combines all the various musical influences and the experience of growing up in the south in the 80's, at least to this reviewer.
I'm a 57 year old Caucasian male who still enjoys good music and great bands. Drive By Truckers fills the bill, with their three axe attack. They are not to be missed. I just hope they continue to play small venues. The Recher is a great play to see/hear live music!!
Amazing show! Very high energy! Great Music! Right, overuse of exclamation points. Really though, the Truckers and Langhorne were great. I hope they make the Recher a regular stop whenever they tour. If I get enough cash together, I'll head down to see them when they play the Bottle and Cork in June.
The venue was small and we were up close and personal with the band. DBT certainly rocks and I will definitely see them again. It was really interesting because there were a lot of dudes. I felt like a minority. :-)
High energy from start to finish, a classic DBT outing. An audience packed with long-time fans meant a surprisingly high sing-along factor, which was only occasionally too much of a good thing. Show was sold-out and then some, and I could see (and hear) why. I don't get to too many concerts, especially if they're on a weeknight, but this was definitely worth it.
Solid performance for over two and one-half hours. The Recher crowd was totally into it. The encore lasted 30 minutes.
My husband loved the show. He wants to see them with Tom Petty in the summer too.
