DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:
Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."
"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."
"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."
I couldn't even make out which song the truckers were singing. The instruments were turned up way too loud.
Excellent show, great mix of old and new songs. The venue was nice....it used to be the Roxy and they re-did everything. Have to say, kind of weird to see a Truckers show while standing on carpet. Overall, excellent show!
Great Band! Wonderful performance. Would have been nice in a different facility... But great experience overall!
Drive By Truckers' concert at the Newport in Columbus was great! Played lots from the new album and favorites too. I highly recommend seeing DBT. They played their hearts out for over 2 1/2 hours!
great show. 25 or so songs. lots of guitar solos. highly recommended
set list spanned all the trucker's albums. 40 minute encore!! great live band!!
My first DBT show was one I won't forget. Got so close I could almost smell the Jack. Shonna touched me.
Fantastic show- over 2 hours of great music. New and old stuff and a surprise cover at the end- totally rocked.
The Sunday night DBT show at @TheVogue in Indy was superb. If you've never seen the Drive-By Truckers, you're missing one of the true live rock bands of our time. The Vogue was smoke free and the sound was great. Never miss this band!
This is the second time I have watched the Drive-By Truckers at the First Avenue Club. Just like the last time, this show was amazing. DBT knows how to put on one hell of a show. Playing a great line up from their new album as well as taking the time to play the favorites from all previous albums. Every new album is always packed full of new great songs. If you have any interest in DBT at all, make it a point to go to a show they are headlining! You will not be disappointed even if you are not familiar with their music. I took my girlfriend who had never heard of them and she incredibly impressed and wants to see them again!
The truckers were great as use. It would have been nice to know that they would be starting their show before 9 pm, so first ave. could double book with Latin dance extravaganza night at 10:20??? Do we have to show up at 6:30 for every show now?
This is the third time I have seen the Truckers and this was by far the best show. From the opening song "After the Scene Dies" to the customary "Let There Be Rock" the band was tight and the sound mix was right on. The addition of Jeff Neff on guitar and Jay Gonzalez on key boards have really added a lot to the solid line up of Cooley,Hood,Tucker and Morgan. Highlights of the show were "Ronnie and Neil" and a crowd sing along to "Hell No I Ain't Happy". Cooley's Keith Richards riffs keep the crowd jumping on songs "Shut Up and Get on the Plane" and on "Marry Me" Although there was plenty of material played from the new album I wish the band would have played "This F@#cking Job" or "Drag the Lake Charlie". Over all this is the best show I have seen in a long time. I can't wait until DBT comes back to the Twin Cities.
Drive-By Truckers puts on an amazing show. Their set is just solid rock and roll music for 2+ hours. Such a drunken good time.
Alt country band Drive-By Truckers flew high (w/ a low-fi analogue 70's sound) & lacerated at The Fillmore until 1am!
I have seen the Drive-By Truckers on four consecutive tours, so I have some prospective on DBT over the years. They are one of my favorite bands. I love their stories of the "Dirty South" and how Patterson and Cooley show their passion on stage. The show at the Avalon Friday was another excellent night with DBT (although not without a couple disappointments ... read on). A few of the new songs came across well, especially "Birthday Boy", "This F'n Job" and "Get Downtown". Cooley also had a great solo which lifted "The Flying Wallendas". The rest of the set list was a good mix. "Tornados" was dedicated to the victims of the Tennessee floods. "Women without Whiskey" showed up in the middle and blew me away, as usual. The set ended with a hard and fast version of "Putting People on the Moon". A couple of disappointing aspects to the show. It was clear the Avalon had a 10:30 cut-off time so they could get the long line of folks outside in for their 11:00 nightclub. DBT went on at 8:45. So we got a hour and 45 minutes of rock. Reading the other reviews and from past experience, I believe we had a half hour cut, a shame from the way the end of the show and encores were rocking. I know there were 3-4 more songs I wanted to hear. Too bad. Also thought the stage lighting was lame. I don't expect a DBT light show or anything, but I'd like to see the band play. Too much dark blue, red or just dark lighting, how about some light to see DBT ? Lastly, the Southern Rock Opera / Declaration Day / Dirty South trifecta with the awesome Jason Isbell is hard to match and DBT hasn't matched it with the most recent three albums. I saw tours during those albums (with Jason) and since. The material isn't as good and Jason added a tremendous amount with his songs and great shredding. DBT still delivers, it's just a matter of if it's an incredible or simply very good show.
Wow...1st time seeing them live. DBT is UNREAL! The set list was amazing and they played each song-both new and old-with such skill & feeling, it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The Fillmore is such a great place to see a show like this & the crowd vibe was great.
DBT has a good history of live shows, this one's no different. Another excellent show from the guys.
Its was a great concert and i had a wonderful time. I would love to see them again. The sound wasnt as clear as i wanted. It was hard to hear some of the lyrics cause the instruments flutterd the speakers on certain songs. But i thought the concert was great Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood are amazing.
I am a new DBT fan, eight weeks to be exact. Two weeks ago I checked out their web page for the first time and was thrilled to learn they were touring and were going to be in Hollywood on May 7th. The show was amazing!!!! They played for two solid hours, and they are extraordinary musicians. I would Definitely go see them again!!!
I heard where they usually play at least two and half hours long. At the Avalon they played only one hour and forty minutes. They did not play any of these songs: Mama Bake a Pie Daddy Kill a Chicken, Gravity, Play it All Night Long, Daddy Needs a Drink, Hell No I Aint Happy, Do It Yourself, Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife or Bob. The sound man was horrible and could not get the mic right all night long!!!!
