DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:

Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."

"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."

"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."

  • Love the Heartless Bastards, DBT was Alright.

by Soundaround on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Well, the title pretty much sums it up. I see the Heartless Bastards every time they come through. This was a pretty good setup for them to try out a few acoustic-based songs for their new album, but I could have done with 45 minutes of DBT and two hours of Heartless Bastards instead of the other way around.

  • Heartless Bastards 100%, truckers OK.

by Secker on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I bought my tickets to see the Heartless Bastards so as far as I was concerned the Drive By Truckers were just the side show act. The Truckers sounded great and were very good. The Heartless Bastards were amazing! Erika's voice is one of a kind. Dave Colvin (drummer) is amazing. Without him they'd just be another Austin band. The Erika/Dave combo will take The Heartless Bastards to platinum status for sure.

  • Left me wanting

by weldinggoddess on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

Last time I saw the Drive-By-Truckers it was about 6 years ago at the Tractor Tavern. Alot has changed since then for them...and for me. I was not thrilled by their changes. The songs off the newer albums just seem a little less heartfelt and anguished. I couldn't get down to any of them. The songs that they played off their beloved second album had just a fraction of that old desparation that they once did. They crowd still sung along to them, but seemed confused and disoriented when the band busted out something from their new album. Patterson Hood still has his old howly drawl that does not offend. Mike Cooley however, seems to have spent too much time with his head out the tour bus window turning his voicebox into the sqeaky, nasal, out of tune cacophony it has become. I wanted to leave the venue for the songs he sang and come back for Pattersons. On that note someone needed to inform the bass player that she is now in Seattle and she should take advantage of one of the thousands of coffee shops in town and down a quad mocha breve before the show so it may have looked like she was excited to be there. SHe spent the entire show I believe, looking to Patterson for guidance...ugh. On a more positive note, the keyboardist/piano? player was a welcome addition to the line up. He tinkled through appropriatly; punctuatuing and accentuating a few moments of feeling. The drummer seemed like he had his shit together and was steady and strong throughout the night. All in all, I never got that feeling in my chest and that wide-eyed mental orgasm that I got the first time I saw these guys. I may have to chalk it up to a larger venue, lack of hunger that younger/newer bands seem to posess and it also could have been my lack of whiskey this time around. But judging by the rest of the crowd, they may have been feeling the same way too... I keep holding out hope and listening to "Decoration Day" until DBT can lure me back to one of their shows with the promise of a wild-eyed good time...

  • DBT tore it up!

They were happy to be back in Seattle and rocked a sold-out show! I loved it!

  • Truckers Rocked!

by MixDiscJim on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Definitely a great live band that gives value for the price of a ticket! I have seen them numerous times and they always kick ass. Patterson has so much passion for what he does and Cooley makes for a nice change of pace. And the rest of the crew pulls their weight as well. Hats off to the Heartless Bastards for a rockin' start to the evening. I wasn't too familiar with their work and am planning to go on a little Itunes bender.

Heard one song on KEXP, decided to check them out. Amazing show. Great songs, great jams, great musicians. Good people. What music is all about, when you get down to it.

  • Drive By Truckers was Fantastic

by KennyF on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

My first time to see DBT and was very impressed. They play a long set by today's standard with a very good variety of music. Their recorded music is good but the songs live are a treat. The Show Box is great for this kind of show, the place was packed.

  • DBT bring some down home music to the big apple

    by Jay661 on 2/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Tuesday nights show at the Bowery Ballroom was spot on. Great venue to catch the Truckers up close and personal. First set went well over two hours, followed by a shorter, four song second set. DBT rocked the house.

the sound quality was very poor , its a small venue and the quality was set for a large room. I have been in smaller rooms where you could hear every note . The band put on a good show, would like to see them in a better venue that could handle their mixing board.

  • One of the Greatest U.S. Bands

by Sluggobeast on 1/25/11Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

An amazing performance from the Drive by Truckers at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Nearly a 2 1/2 hour show of their wonderful, cinematic songs, played with unbridled passion. joy and loads of energy. One of the truly great rock and roll bands, really deserving of much wider recognition and larger audiences.

  • Drive-by Truckers kick ass

    by tophockey2 on 1/23/11The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

I saw DBT a couple of years ago at Wanee in the rain and have been anxiously anticipating seeing them at a better venue. They definitely did not disappoint. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley were at their best as well the rest of the band. These guys are true musicians and deserve to be recognized as such and as one of the best bands in the country.

  • DBT in the zone

  • Kick-ass county rock with LYRICS you can feel!

by HopHound on 1/20/11Culture Room - Fort LauderdaleRating: 4 out of 5

Saw these guys tonight in Fort Lauderdale after being introduced to them a few years back. These guys put on one hell of a show. The more you listen to them, the more you will appreciate them. The lyrics are the best part of the songs to me, but give them the chance and you be the judge. A band miles apart from anything else you have ever heard. They started ou with "Dead, Drunk, Naked" which I loved. They played a few songs of the new album, which seems to be a more laid back type of album, but sounds good so far.

  • DBT was awesome on New Years Eve!!!

    by maryjane17 on 1/9/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

DBT made for a very unforgettable New Years in NYC! The band played from 10pm-2am with only one short intermission.

  • Rock & Roll Circus

    by Elmore58 on 1/3/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had seen DBT at the Electric Factory in April or May '10. Given the strength of their recorded material I was kind of underwhelmed by that show; they seemed over-structured and heavily scripted and I never thought they "let it fly". Well, they sure let it fly New Years Eve in Terminal 5. The sound was great...I've seen Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr there and was in the house for NYE last year for "The Word" show and at all three shows, the sound was very good. There was the Bindlestiffe Family Circus, with funky contortionists, a strong man, and such. If their little show between sets let the band relax and freshen up, they always be part of the show. The first set was good with new stuff from "The Big To-Do", but after they came back out and rang in the New Year, they really smoked. The 2nd set included covers of soul classics like "Respect Yourself" with Patterson Hood's mom (vocals) and Dad (bass) onstage. The obvious fun the band was having was infectious and an unexpected but fun detour that seemed to reinforce the magical "anything can happen now" party atmosphere New Year's Eve is supposed to have. After the parents left the stage the show really began to rip electrically as the band seared through some of the great material in their early recordings. With John Neff standing up with a Les Paul rather than sitting down at the steel-pedal, DBT becomes the formidable three-guitar rock wrecking ball that Hood idolized in Lynyrd Skynyrd. It really was the show that I knew they could do and I hope to see them again this year (they are one of the few bands I can think of who I would actually like to see outdoors....) Get "The Big To-Do"

Great show, more than 3 hours of music! Definitely got my money's worth.
