DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:

Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."

"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."

"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."

  • Great Show - Just wish they had sold out

by MaineDBTFAn on 11/20/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

This is the third time I have seen the DBT, but the first time in Maine. I sure hope they come back. They put on a great show, and have a ton of material. They do not use a set list, so every show is different. Opening act was Jessica Lea Mayfield - great voice, but the acoustics were not good, and she could have stood to have the sound system turned down a notch or two. DBT played a mix of songs from throughout their career. Very laid back crowd, but also very into the show. The last DBT show I went to was at HOB Boston and was in the front row. This time I chose to sit in the balcony and enjoy the show from afar. (Also was Sober). The crowd in front of the stage was having a great time and very cool, despite a heavy flow of liquor. The balcony crowd was much more mellow, but was having a great time as well. Great musicianship, and well worth the money. I'm going to guess the venue was about 2/3 full. I hope the State becomes a normal stop for DBT on northern swings. The Truckers did a heavy sampling of songs from their classic 2001 Double Album - Southern Rock Opera, and sprinkled in tunes from all their other albums. The sound was pretty good - you could tell that DBT had the soundboard mixed in right (again, could have been a little lower on the volume, as there was a little distortion on the high guitar notes, but no ringing of the ears after the show). If you haven't seen these guys live you are missing out. They are a very unconventional and talented band. They work hard on the stage, and put on an Arena Sized show in smaller venues. Twenty three songs and 2 hours and 15 minutes after the show started, it was over, but the crowd still wanted more. Great Rock Show!!!

Great show as always! DBT never disappoints in concert! Pageant is still the best place to watch a show too!

  • by BRup on 10/30/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 2 out of 5

Just not my style. Poor vocals and fair musical ability. But at least it was an improvement over the warm up band.

  • by Kspecial on 10/30/11The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

These guys (and gal) are awesome!! They put on a fantastic show. Their songs are smart and funny and thought provoking. By the way, they know how to rock. My ass is no longer there because it officially was rocked off on Friday night. A little disappointed that the balcony at The Pagaent was closed. That is not the band's fault, though. I'm not sure why DBT are not bigger stars. Wake up people!! Side note- I'm a big Cardinals fan and it was really cool being in St. Lou for the clinching night of the World Series.. Very smart of the band to wait until the game was over to start!!

  • DBT kicked it!!!

DBT show was great! We in STL can't thank you enough for starting after the Cards game!!!

  • Great band - terrible sound!

by LennyLeonard on 10/22/1120th Century Theater - CincinnatiRating: 4 out of 5

As usual DBT rocked it! I've seen them many times and they never disappoint. Unfortunately, the sound system was not good and left my one ear ringing for a day.

  • Muddy sound, rockin set list.

by MitNagrom on 10/22/1120th Century Theater - CincinnatiRating: 3 out of 5

The 20th century usually has decent sound, but tonight it was full of feedback and distortion and the vocals had no clarity. We could usually not understand them when they addressed the audience between songs. A lot of people complained about the sound, some even left. Maybe the small room just couldn't handle all of the instruments simultaneously pouring through the PA. The set list was not my favorite. I needed to hear some slower tracks like "eyes like glue" or maybe some older Jason Isbell stuff. It never came. Overall I do like this hard working rock band, but I prefer seeing them outdoors or unplugged like when they play festivals or record stores.

  • Southern rock noir

by DrLdawg on 6/28/11The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Only the Drive By Truckers can play with the upbeat sound to pull off the dark noir songs they sing. They capture the south and all it's contradictions and beauty with grace and style. Or should I say a style of their own. Thanks for the great show.

  • Incredible show- serious display of musical talent

    by Serge30 on 6/26/11The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

DBT once again showed their talent for generating legitimate Southern rock and blasting their fans in the face with it. Outstanding.

  • Truckers Rock!

    by Thumper42 on 6/25/11The Norva - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

Had the privilege of seeing the Drive By Truckers at the Norva last Thursday night. The Truckers performance was outstanding as usual; no surprises there. I was especially pleased to hear them perform songs from their entire history as a band. With the exception of their premiere album "Ganstabiliy"' these Alabama gents (and Shonna) performed songs from every one of their albums. I had expected they would concentrate only on the albums released sense Jason Isbell left the band but I was pleasantly surprised. The show began strong with "The Southern Thing" from the Southern Rock Opera album and did not let up. I was also pleased to see Patterson call down some idiot who seemed to be trying to mosh and was invading the space of all those around him. "Hey D-bag, are you listening to me?" funny stuff. I don't have any idea if the opening act Futurebirds were any good or not. The mix on their sound was so horrible it was impossible to really listen to any of their music FOH. I know the Truckers are the headliner, but the sound guy really needs to try to help out the opening act as well. Absolutely horrible job on sound for the opening act, but seemed to be fixed before the headliners came on. As far as the Norva...... great venue for listening to bands. Was a little disappointed in the backstage cafe and their promise to provide my "will call" tickets at the table and allow me side access into the auditorium. I ended up having to leave the cafe and walk around to the box office to retrieve my ticks. Oh well. If you ever get a chance to see DBT live, please go. I guarantee you will have an excellent time. Not to be missed. While I missed Jason Isbell's songs in the set, the Truckers have not missed a beat and continue to put on an excellent show.

Having seen the Truckers a number of times, this show stands out as particularly awesome. The set was great and the sound at the Norva is pretty incredible. Had a great time and would definitely recommend a DBT show if you haven't been. They played a good mix of newer songs (GoGo Boots/The Big To-Do era) and older favorites, including "Buttholeville" as the show closer. The opening band, FUTUREBIRDS, put on a fire set--definitely worth checking out!! They played a number of killer tracks off their full-length album, as well as a cover of "Wild Heart" and a new original song I had not heard before but cannot wait to catch again. So much talent and energy in this band! All in all, the show was perfect with two great acts, strong song selections, and a venue with superb acoustics.

Show Was Great!!!! Drive By Truckers Sound was Excellent

  • Another fine show

    by Zeehy420 on 4/12/11Bluebird Nightclub - BloomingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Second time seeing DBT, First time was earlier November Vogue show. This was better, and I didn't think that was even possible. Love those dudes. With that much energy, how does Patterson and Cooley do it like dey do?

  • DBT was great but Venue was questionable

by MeredithN on 4/12/11Bluebird Nightclub - BloomingtonRating: 4 out of 5

DBT played a great show as always. This was not one of my favorite setlist they have ever played, but they still rocked it out with their usual charming personalities. My biggest disappointment was with the venue. The Bluebird is tiny, cramped, and hot. I think the Truckers would definitely benefit from a larger, more organized venue. Plus, the patrons attending were some of the most immature, rudest people I've ever seen in public. They really put a damper on what should have been an awesome night.

  • DBT rocked the Ogden!

by Editor on 3/26/11Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Great song selection both nights, with lots of older stuff each night. The shows did not focus entirely on Go-Go Boots, though the best songs from that album were played throughout the two nights. The band was on both nights, better than the past couple times I'd seen them out in California. The band likes Denver and seemed happy to be closing out this leg of the tour in front of an appreciative audience.

  • by Anonymous on 3/20/11Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

The Ogden was loud as usual. I really wish they could figure out the acoustics in that building, but it's not something that has ever prevented me from going to the venue. I really feel like the Heartless bastards stole the show. Erika Wennerstrom's voice sounded great and the band never missed a beat. Honestly, I wouldn't have bought the ticket had they not been on the line up. The Drive-By Truckers did a fine job for a band that has never really found their sound. I find it odd that they have three lead vocalists with three completely different sounds. Apparently that only bothers me, the rest of the crowed seemed to enjoy every second of the show.

  • Great show

Almost three hours, great set list. These guys are amazing musicians.

  • Best show of the year

by truckersfan on 3/20/11Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second time I have seen Drive By Truckers and this show was definitely better. The first time was in Boulder. The Ogden is a better venue, Denver had a better crowd and the Truckers responded to the energy of the crowd and venue. Amazing energy, amazing setlist, must see show!

  • DBT keeps getting better!

by Beemerrev on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

It was 6 songs into the show before they pulled out a song from the new album. They just kicked off with a few crowd favorites, and kept wailing at it all night long. A brilliant show, very tight and a fine blend of Hood/Cooley, though I would have enjoyed more Shonna. I've seen them numerous times, and they just keep getting better with time.

  • by Anonymous on 3/14/11Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Opening band weren't terrible, but not very interesting. DBT were fantastic, especially the encore / second set. New lady bass player sang a couple of songs that were very good, and crazy steel slide guitar thing was a nice addition; I don't think they had that last time they came to Seattle.
