About

DR SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL is the record-setting Broadway sensation which features the hit songs "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" and "Welcome Christmas" from the original animated television special. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is "two sizes too small," decides to steal Christmas away from the Holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets and costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss' original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, as this sparkling production breathes new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. Don't miss what The New York Times calls "AN EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE! 100 times better than any bedtime story."

  • Great Show - Slightly Long

by Miranda on 12/4/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great! We really enjoyed it. However, there were times I thought it ran a bit longer than needed. At about the hour mark, all of the kids in the theater were simultaneously getting restless and ready for it to be over. Also, the announcements at the beginning were impossible to hear - the volume definitely needed to be turned up. The same was true for the Cindy Lou Who character, I found her hard to hear. I would definitely recommend though!

  • Very Slow

by DaniB on 12/4/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

We have seen the Grinch show a few years ago and it was awesome. This show was not. It was very slow and kind of boring. You could tell all of the kids in the theater were getting so restless because it was just soooooooooo slow.

  • Poor accoustics

by Very difficult h on 12/4/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 2 out of 5

Was very difficult to understand the dialogue. Need a sound system for that type of performance!

  • A Christmas Season MUST SEE!

by Julius & Gayle on 12/4/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

What a wonderful experience for everyone young and old! We will be making this an annual event.

  • Underwhelming night at The Fox

by Mandi on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Traditionally, my family and I are huge fans of The Grinch! We also love the Fox Theatre—it’s a stunning venue where we’ve enjoyed countless concerts and shows. Unfortunately, this experience was by far the least enjoyable we’ve ever had there. First, the late seating was a major disruption. People were allowed to enter 10–15 minutes into the performance, and it wasn’t just a handful—it was a steady stream that made it incredibly difficult to focus or even see the stage. Second, the sound quality was disappointing. The volume was so low that it was hard to hear, and what we could hear was muffled, which detracted from the overall experience. Finally, the Grinch’s costume was underwhelming. Given the prestige of the venue and the price of the tickets, I expected something much more impressive. While I’ll always love The Grinch and the Fox Theatre, this performance didn’t live up to the high standards I’ve come to expect from this iconic venue.

  • It was Ok

by Grinch Fan on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

This was cute, but if you expecting a resemblance to the Grinch or the Whoville people, you will be disappointed! The props were in black and white and the grinch looked like a green Beetlejuice. The actor was very good though. It was disappointing for me.

  • Great show

by KKL on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The matinee on Saturday 11/30 was great! The "Grinch"was expertly and hilariously performed!!!! The sets were incredible, and they did an awesome job of preserving some of the critical Seuss lines from the book! The Fox Theater in Detroit is INCREDIBLY beautiful, and the merch, beverages and snacks were excellent! All of the staff were very friendly and helpful! Great holiday spirit throughout!!!!! The agents at the Box Office/Will Callwere working hard, and went above and beyond to help guests. Might have been helpful to have more than 2 people working though, as it was a very busy holiday weekend. The only drawbacks: The "Max"character is a plain, brown dog in the Seuss book, and on all the marketing materials, merchandise, etc. BUT the "Max"character in this show was wearing a black and white costume, and looked way more like a skunk with this huge bushy tail. The "senior Max"that served as the narrator was nearly impossible to hear, and for most of the show, one could hear about 1/4 of his lines. Perhaps there was a mic issue with him, but there were several parts throughout the show where there seemed to be an imbalance between the instrumental music and the vocals, and the vocals were overwhelmed by the music. All in all, it was a wonderful, festive show for the holiday weekend and we had a great time!!!!!

  • Fun

by Tammy on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great show Cast did a great job. Only bad thing was it was hard to hear them sometimes. The Fox theater is a wonderful place .

  • Great acting

by Honey on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Acting was great but it was very hard to hear/understand what they were saying or singing. We were seated in row K next to the aisle on the main floor. Somehow you need to improve this issue. What we paid for 4 tickets the words should have been very clear. This was the only negative thing about the performance.

  • Could have been better

by Joe on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

The show was good, however, the performers were difficult to hear. Between the performers speaking to fast, to quietly and the sound system being set to quiet, it was difficult to hear.

  • Disappointed in the Production

by Rita on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

I was very disappointed in the production. The makeup did not look legit to the makeup. The Grinch looked like a cheap knock off. There was barely any acting. It was mostly singing. I was waiting for the show to be over.

  • Wonderful experience

by Julielou on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

What a wonderful experience to witness the Grinch’s story come to life and see the awe and excitement through the eyes of children watching their favorite storybook be told to them in 3D. The singing and dancing of the performers was impeccable. Our seats allowed us to also watch the orchestra musicians which gave an additional experience that was transcendent.

  • Musical part was fantastic, the audience was NOT

by Lindsay on 12/3/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

The musical was fantastic! Everyone did a great job and it was so fun. Unfortunately, for a few hundred dollars, someone should remind the audience why we were all there. Perhaps even a disclaimer for a special "children's hour"would have helped. The couple sitting next to my kids and I were heavily making out, loud tongues an all, with hands going everywhere. I was shocked the staff all over didn't say anything. The children (ages 6 and above, like mine) sitting behind us with their grandparents kicked the back of our seats almost the whole time, chewed their snacks incredibly loud, pulled my daughters hair several times, and hit my daughter in the face when reaching for the falling snow. The grandparents said nothing. Apparently manners all around don't happen anymore, and that's really sad for performers that have put their heart and soul in to a great performance.

  • Great!

  • It was just ok

by Lin on 12/2/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

I expected more It was just ok. It seemed more like a local presentation instead of theatres. It was not worth the money at all

  • Enjoyable for all ages

by Sue on 12/2/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

The sets were fabulous, having the orchestra play live music was wonderful, the costumes were elaborate and very fun, and the actors were extremely animated and just 'spot on'. Their timing individually and collectively was excellent. We sat left of center, 19 rows back. The sound was muffled and difficult at times. That may be due to the sound system at the Fox Theatre, but that was the only downside for us.

  • Excellent!

by skici on 12/2/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I enjoyed our kickoff to the holiday season with "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"at the Fox Theatre! The Grinch was especially amusing!

  • Hard to hear and see

by Jen on 12/2/24Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

It was cute but it was very hard to hear them and see them. Also, some of the songs were very slow and kids (ages 8, 6, and 3) lost interest.
