Dermot Kennedy on Tour

Folk singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy has quickly taken the world by storm, rising from a small town in Ireland to release a number of charting singles as well as work with revered musicians and producers like Glen Hansard and Mike Dean (Kanye West, Travis Scott). In 2017, the dynamic performer went on the U.S. festival circuit and played Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, making an international name for himself with his high-energy shows. The following year, he went on a world tour and played shows in the U.S., Australia and Europe, hitting Coachella and also playing an NPR Tiny Desk Concert after being voted NPR Slingshot Best New Artist of the Year. Kennedy's live shows flesh out his intimate tunes with a full band, bringing the audience fully inside his expressive songs. Kennedy's tour in 2019 took him across multiple continents as he incorporated tracks from his sophomore album, Without Fear, into his set.

Dermot Kennedy in Concert

Born in 1991 in Ireland, Kennedy was attracted to music at a young age, picking up a guitar at 10 and taking the plunge into songwriting a few years later, at 14. Before long, Kennedy was performing at open mics around Dublin; eventually he found himself busking — playing music on the street for money — in cities around the world. After high school, he studied classical music at the university level for a few years, but ultimately decided to pursue folk music. Kennedy's big break came when he won first place in a major upset at the South County Song Contest at St. Finian's GAA Club, putting him on the radar of industry professionals and singer-songwriters around the world.

After he self-published on Spotify, some of Kennedy's music found its way onto Discover Weekly playlists, which helped him get noticed by a wider audience. His first charting single, "Young & Free," reached No. 82 on the Irish Singles Chart, but his breakthrough came with 2018's "Power Over Me," which reached No. 10 on the Irish Singles Chart, No. 21 on the U.S.'s Hot Rock Songs and No. 5 on Adult Alternative. "Power Over Me" has since been certified gold. Kennedy signed to Interscope and, in January 2019, released his self-titled debut album, which hit No. 5 on the Irish charts.

  • Dermot Kennedy was amazing

    by Jessica M 2022 on 6/9/23FirstBank Amphitheater - FranklinRating: 5 out of 5

Dermot Kennedy is amazing, I have seen him multiple times and he was great at the first show and just gets even better each show. He plays his heart out and is amazing. First Bank is my new favorite venue, I have been there 4 times and it never disappoints.

  • One of the best voices I’ve heard!

by AMAZING on 6/9/23FirstBank Amphitheater - FranklinRating: 5 out of 5

Words can’t express how amazing he was live!! He sang his soul and shook our hearts! He was truly one of the best male vocalists I’ve ever heard and he just gave it is all on that stage.

  • Disappointing

by Kaysie on 6/7/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 2 out of 5

The venue itself was okay, and the stage looked great, but Dermot wasn’t exactly a great artist to meet. At other concerts where I’ve met other artists (Khalid & Dean Lewis) these artists were so kind and had an actual conversation with me when I met them. Dermot seemed less than excited to be there and to meet his fans. He literally just said “hi” and we took a picture. I was very disappointed, especially after paying so much for the meet and greet.

  • Inspiring and fun show

by Zach on 6/7/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Really enjoyed the show. Dermot is a smart and inspiring artist. It's great to see his success coming to the states. He doesn't disappoint and played a great mix of his old and newer music. Can't wait to see him again.

  • Ummmm WOOOOOW

    by M. H. on 6/7/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Literally cried during every song. dermot has gotten me through some of the toughest times. his song “better days” always makes me think of my late grandfather and i was balling like a baby when he sang it. will definitely see him again and recommend to anyone.

  • Passion and Emotion

by Ben on 6/7/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Dermot's voice was on point and sounded amazing. He sang with such passion and sincerity and truly connected with his fan base. I heard someone say he could be the male version of Taylor Swift, and I don't think that was too far-fetched. If you're not familiar with his music, you're missing out.

  • Even better in person

by Angie on 6/6/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

WOW. Dermot sounds even better in person. You can't say that about all artists when they perform live. It was a religious experience. Thank you, Dermot

  • Great concert

by Geoff B. on 6/6/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The music and atmosphere were great. The price of beer was extortionate! Traffic near the venue was chaotic and needed police to keep things flowing.

  • Incredible

  • Dermot Kennedy

by Liz on 6/6/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Dermot was AMAZING. No words can really express how impactful he is and how he radiates that through his performances. Meet and greet and Venue experience however was the worst I’ve ever experienced. To pay so much to be pushed around in the heat for HOURS with no communication was entirely not fair. If he wasn’t so impactful and amazing the venue itself would’ve ruined it all.

This was such a Euphoric experience. Would do it over and over again! He was absolutely incredible!

A true musician. Humble, heartfelt and puts on an amazing show. His voice was perfect. The band and backup singers were on point. The amphitheater had great sound. Great first time there.

What an amazing show! The venue was super nice, orderly, clean, spacious, etc. I was really impressed with the staff at Red Hat Amphitheater. The opener mehro was surprising and very good. Dermot Kennedy is my favorite artist and he always gives so much of himself when performing live. It was incredible.

I never in a million years thought that Dermot Kennedy would sound as good live as he did. I’ve been listening to his music for years now and many of his songs have a very deep meaning to me. Hearing him in person was more than I ever could have imagined. One of the best concerts I have ever been to!

  • Amazing

by Maggie on 6/6/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I've been listening to Dermot for a couple of years now and just continue to love his music and sound. My husband, who has never even heard of Dermot Kennedy, went with me to his show in Raleigh over the weekend and we had the best time. He just seems like such a humble and kind person, repeatedly saying thank you after almost every song. His performance was so good and even my husband was impressed by him. I would literally go see him again tomorrow if I could. Absolutely loved this show.

  • M&G 4/10, Concert 10/10

by Riss on 6/6/23Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing—Dermot involved the audience often and made the night very special. The meet and greet was a bit underwhelming: the merch/goodie bag was a bit of a joke (a magnet, bag, and two pins), intentionally poor lighting was chosen for the photo (much better lighting clearly available…the sun had everyone squinting), and you left with the certainty that Dermot wouldn’t remember you in thirty minutes (or five). Keep expectations low for the meet and greet, if you choose that package. The concert won’t disappoint though, and I’d recommend moving as many mountains as necessary to attend! (:
