Dermot Kennedy on Tour
Folk singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy has quickly taken the world by storm, rising from a small town in Ireland to release a number of charting singles as well as work with revered musicians and producers like Glen Hansard and Mike Dean (Kanye West, Travis Scott). In 2017, the dynamic performer went on the U.S. festival circuit and played Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, making an international name for himself with his high-energy shows. The following year, he went on a world tour and played shows in the U.S., Australia and Europe, hitting Coachella and also playing an NPR Tiny Desk Concert after being voted NPR Slingshot Best New Artist of the Year. Kennedy's live shows flesh out his intimate tunes with a full band, bringing the audience fully inside his expressive songs. Kennedy's tour in 2019 took him across multiple continents as he incorporated tracks from his sophomore album, Without Fear, into his set.
Dermot Kennedy in Concert
Born in 1991 in Ireland, Kennedy was attracted to music at a young age, picking up a guitar at 10 and taking the plunge into songwriting a few years later, at 14. Before long, Kennedy was performing at open mics around Dublin; eventually he found himself busking — playing music on the street for money — in cities around the world. After high school, he studied classical music at the university level for a few years, but ultimately decided to pursue folk music. Kennedy's big break came when he won first place in a major upset at the South County Song Contest at St. Finian's GAA Club, putting him on the radar of industry professionals and singer-songwriters around the world.
After he self-published on Spotify, some of Kennedy's music found its way onto Discover Weekly playlists, which helped him get noticed by a wider audience. His first charting single, "Young & Free," reached No. 82 on the Irish Singles Chart, but his breakthrough came with 2018's "Power Over Me," which reached No. 10 on the Irish Singles Chart, No. 21 on the U.S.'s Hot Rock Songs and No. 5 on Adult Alternative. "Power Over Me" has since been certified gold. Kennedy signed to Interscope and, in January 2019, released his self-titled debut album, which hit No. 5 on the Irish charts.
As always, Dermot Kennedy put on an amazing show! The Orpheum was such a perfect, intimate venue for this show.
Dermot is one of the best song writer. When he sings, you feel how much each song means to him. Dermot is absolutely amazing!
This show was phenomenal! The venue was perfect and Dermot and his band were magical.
This was my 5th time seeing Dermot. He is just amazing! His voice is exquisite and his lyrics are like poetry and evoke so much emotion. I definitely brought my tissues - might have had to use them during a couple of songs.
I am was not a fan of Dermot but I am now! I came to accompany my underage child and was blown away! To prepare for the event, I was listening to Dermot's music beforehand and, though I really liked the lyrics, it is not an artist I would have chosen to listen to on my own. HOWEVER, Dermot is just incredible live! He is one of those artist whose sound is SO amazing and soul touching live. It was truly an experience to enjoy this event with my child AND now I am a new fan of this artist. I just wish that his recorded music would sound as amazing as he does on stage. My goodness! His sound and voice is just incredible live. He really sets the tone and connects so well with the audience. Every song is an experience. I would DEFINITELY love to see him live again. It was a great, great experience.
I would rate Dermot 5 stars. 10 stars. 20 stars!! The artistry, the emotion, the care put into the performance. He’s one of a kind and it’s always worth seeing him. Unfortunately the evening was marred by people falling ill in the middle of the performance. The first time this happened, first responders were able to address the situation quietly. The second and third times however, the music stopped. The lights came up. Dermot even left the stage. I know the Orpheum can’t do anything about people falling ill — these things happen. There just has to be a better way to address it, so everyone else in attendance doesn’t lose out on probably 20+ minutes of performance time. Not only that, but it’s hard to recover the mood from that, especially the second time. With ushers everywhere, this shouldn’t have happened the way it did.
Dermot Kennedy was excellent, the reworked songs were superb, and as a more intimate gig, it was a great performance, as was Haffway as a warm-up. But the venue wasn't great: if you were under the mezz in the opera, there was a balcony/landing, and all you could hear were people talking and hand dryers from the toilets. Plus, with the bar open,n people were getting up and going in and out all night getting drinks, distracting from the performance.
Dermot Kennedy at the Orpheum in Boston. What an amazing show. What an amazing artist Dermot Kennedy is. It’s refreshing to have a musician that is so talented but remains so humble and grateful. He doesn’t forget where he came from and puts everything he has into every song. Had to be one of the best performances I have ever attended. Third time seeing him and he gets better every time. His cover of Carrickfergus was epic.
Dermot Kennedy gave us an incredible performance, his music and his deep vocals, dedication for his music and fans is absolutely outstanding. It was an evening I will not forget. Thank you!!!
Dermot did not disappoint, per usual. I have seen him perform many times and he always gives 110%. This venue was intimate and the acoustics were incredible. The show did not disappoint. My only concern was with the crowding of the venue. There were so many people crammed together. It was overwhelming. Very difficult to make your way to the restroom or merch.
