Death Cab at the bowl with the symphony was >>>>>>
by Drewski on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5amazing! their first half of the set they warmed up with some of their older material and worked on building the audiance up for what was about to happen. they opened with "Marching Bands of Manhatten" and "Your Heart is an Empty Room", and then rocked out on 2003's "The New Year", needless to say, thats when the show really started. Ben Gibbards long hair flying around with every lyric completed, and bassist Nick Harmer really getting into the feel of what he was playing, you could tell that these guys were more than happy to be playing the bowl. When the band is having fun, you know the audiance is going to pick up on that. and you could physicaly feel the vibes just floating throught the air. they also got into other such hits such as "Crooked Teeth", "President of What?", "Photobooth", and a song dedication to the New Pornographers, playing No Sun Light. they then went into a haunting/powerful version of "I will Possess Your Heart", one of my personal favorites. So much raw emotion flooding out of every one of them onsatge! they then went into one of their newer tunes from the Open Door EP, "Little bribes" (which by the way you should also check out the official fan video for the song by a mr. ching. really super cool!) and followed that with "Cath..." and "The Sound of Settling" before Ben announced that they were going to take a small break. after taking about 5 or 10 minutes for the symphony to set up, Ben began with his little heartfelt promise of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" fully supported by the symphony. pure magic. the rest of the songs that followed are as listed; "You Can Do Better Than Me", "Grapevine Fires", "Title and Registration", "Movie Script Ending", "Soul Meets Body", and "Transatlanticism". this was the third show that i have been to at the Hollywood bowl where the symphony has backed a band, and while Beck was incredible, as was Belle & Sebastian, i have to admit that Death Cab took the cake on working with the symphony. And before i forget, Mr. Campbell does a wnderful job as the conducter.
