About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

  • Crowd was horrible at death cab!

    by jhack123 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

I found the crowd to be extremely boring, and not at all into the music. Rather they were much more into their wine and whole foods salads. I went solely for the music and i wished the crowd had also, and been more responsive to the amazingness death cab always produces. No encore. I was devastated.

  • Awesome groups

by JMDA on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I am a huge Tegan and Sara/ Death Cab fan. I had heard The New Pornographers before, but didn't know their songs too well. Even so, I enjoyed their performance. I sat in the upper level in the back, and I was surprised my ears hurt after The New Pornographers, they packed quite a punch. Tegan and Sara played a lot of older songs from their "So Jealous" album, and I think those songs are slightly less popular and are not "crowd pleasers", so I was slightly disappointed with their setlist. However, they made up for it with wit and humor. It was cute that they had their mom there and dedicated a song to her. This was my first time seeing Death Cab live, and I definitely want to go again. I love all their live arrangements (taking the songs slower/faster than the recordings). Ben is so lively on stage, I got excited simply watching his body motion. My favorite song by DCFC was I Will Follow You Into the Dark and The Sound of Settling. I absolutely loved the orchestra in the background. My only complaint is that I sat pretty far away. The performers looked like ants.

  • FIREWORKS

  • Death Cab Rocked!

by yayforlivemusic on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The whole show was amazing. The New Pornographers started it off great. They were followed by a fantastic performance by Tegan and Sara. Their music was provocative and exciting. (I have to go buy their albums now). And finally, a spectacular performance by Death Cab for Cutie. The first half of their set, they rocked out, just the band. Then they came back with a musical accompaniment by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And the show ended with a literal bang with fireworks exploding as they reached the crescendo of "Transatlanticism". Awesome show. Awesome music. Awesome venue.

more STRINGS, and LESS HORNS is my ONLY critique of Death Cab's performance alongside the LA Phil.

  • Awsome show!!

by peace on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing Deathcab and they were amazing!! The LA Philharmonic played with them and they sounded brilliant. They also shot up fireworks on their final song which probably brought many people to tears.

  • Death Cab at the Bowl

by Katw on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The fireworks were a nice addition. The show itself was good but I expected the LA Phil to play a bigger role in the performance. They didn't really come on until the later half of the Death Cab show. Also there were only two songs that really benefited from an orchestral accompaniment. I also thought it was weird that the fireworks came on during such a solemn song like Transatlanticism. Tegan and Sara were absolutely adorable and the New Pornographers did not disappoint. I would see them again.

  • I knew they were good live....but WOW!!!

by Djursetti on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

If you know someone who is not a Death Cab for Cutie fan, simply take them to a live show and I bet they will be a fan after the first song....This band is amazing on record and even better live!!! They started with a mixture of songs from the last three albums. Just song after song after song, with almost no break. There was very little banter with the audience which was nice (even though I like with artists talk but its the hollywood bowl!!! Its hard to see everyone!!!) After around 45min of music they took a little "break" and brought out "fifty of their newest friends"....The LA phil. The first couple of tunes with the phil were rough but it settled in eventually. The final tune was the title track from their 2003 album Transatlanticism. An awesome song and even better live with a full orchestra!!! Capped off with a full fireworks display choreographed with the music and lyrics "I need you so much closer..." Amazing site to see...I havent uploaded the video yet but I have it! An amazing night, amazing show and amazing band.

  • Death Cab For Cutie = Heaven

    by socruls15 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best concert I have ever been to, without a doubt. I work in the music industry and have been to hundreds if not thousands of shows and this by far blew all of them away. The finale with the fireworks, LA Philharmonic, and of course the guys from Death Cab made for one of the most memorable moments of my entire life. Thank you guys.

  • EVERY performer in this show was amazing

    by rollergirl314 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

My friends and I were sitting towards the back of the Hollywood Bowl for this show, and while I did not think the speakers were turned up loud enough, all of the music throughout the show was fantastic. The fireworks and the LA Philharmonic's performance at the end was an amazing way to top off an awesome show. You could bring in your own food and drink, and it was fun socializing with everyone around us. Overall a great experience!

  • DCFC - Great night of music and fireworks

by Gebster on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was great especially with the fireworks at the end of the DCFC/LA Phil set. The opening bands were also great. I wish that The New Pornographers had a longer set, but at least I got to hear Bleeding Heart Show as their last song.

  • Pretty awesome!

by AndyR on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Tegan and Sara were adorable, and their set was great! I only heard the tail end of the New Pornographers, but what i heard was really good. And Death Cab was fantastic, maybe a little boring (they were pretty stationary, didn't talk a whole lot) but they played great. The philharmonic was there, and the fireworks were kick-ass!

  • Amazing venue, Death Cab is beautiful!

by Chopper on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

My first time at the Hollywood Bowl, and now I get what all the hype is about. Easy relaxed beautiful night in the fresh air, surrounded by the hills of hollywood. Great setting for all the bands last night. Really good performances all round! The sound could have been better for the New Pornographers, but I really went there for T&S and Death Cab, so was NOT disappointed in the least. And the fireworks!?! did not expect that and was blown away. Awesome night out!

  • Choreographed Fireworks!

by TexWhit on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I did not think that a Death Cab For Cutie concert could be anymore amazing than it was at the Greek Theatre in 2006. However, I was wrong. They started off their set list with Marching Bands of Manhattan and continued on by playing songs from all their different albums, including their new EP. The L.A. Philharmonic joined in the middle of their set and provided an amazing back up to just Benjamin singing my favorite song, "I WIll Follow You Into the Dark". The other band members rejoined him on stage, and they eventually ended with "Transatlanticism", complete with choreographed fireworks.

  • Wow.

    by marcusss93 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing. All of the bands were awesome live, especially Death Cab For Cutie. Tegan and Sara were very funny and The New Pornographers did very well yesterday. The ending by Death Cab was crazy, I didnt expect fireworks.

in a strange way, i wasn't too excited about this show. i just saw T&S in October '08 and they havent released anything new since. Death Cab has released something and i didnt like anything off of it. once the show started (we caught the last song of The New Pornographers but i am indifferent towards them) and T&S quickly took the stage. my favorite part of their shows is that they conversate with the crowd in between songs, and are very witty. their last two songs were my favorite and enjoyable and high energy, and i feel they turned the volume up for them. after a 30 minute break, DCFC took the stage and played some classics which were alot better than the last time i saw them, probably due to Ben's high energy on whatever instrument he is playing. after a quick 15 minute break, the LA philharmonic came out and did DCFC's last four songs with them, which didnt really help some of those last four because they were piano driven or the horns of the orchestra overtook the sound of the band and vocals. regardless, midway through their last song, fireworks were a flyin and it was perfectly in sync with their song and rhythm, and it all culminated with some big, loud fireworks, then a big thank you from the band which led to the introduction of the conductor of the LA phil, then a final bow by all five of them. in review, i felt being uninspired about the show made it easier for me to enjoy it in the end... 4 out of 5 stars

  • Amazing night

by Smithy on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The night opened with The New Pornographers while it was still light, I was pleasantly suprised by them as I hadn't heard them before. Tegan and Sara followed with more great music and hillarious crowd banter. Death Cab's then played their opening set which was amazing, as expected, but the real show was when they returned with the LA Philharmonic and blew us all away with "Soul Meets Body" and "Grapevine Fires" and finally surpassed all expectations with a fireworks finale.
