About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

  • Death Cab and Fireworks!?!

by Lynds on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Death Cab was awesome! Ben Gibbard is a lyrical genius, and surprisingly energetic. The philharmonic was really intersting to hear with Death Cab and added a new sound, however sometimes I think it kinda overpowered Death Cab. Plus FIREWORKS!!! SWEET! My only complaint was that they didn't play taht long at all, it seemed really short. Overall, great time.

  • Death Cab at the Bowl

    by ravenn22 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Absolutely solid show. It was great evening at the Bowl and all the bands were on! The only critisim was that the New Pornographers set was on the short side at only 30 minutes for such a good band. Tegan and Sara were better live than expected and had candid and funny crowd interaction ( accusing their mom of getting sweet on a Marylin Monroe impersonator in Hollywood ). Death Cab for Cutie played a great set, taking a break halfway through and bringing out the LA Philharmonic for the 2nd half of the set. The LA Phil didn't subtract from the experience, but didn't add as much as I'd hoped. The crowd was in a really good mood and you couldn't ask for a better evening or venue for a great show.

  • All the songs sound the same

by Dropsmcgee on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

To be fair, I'm not a big fan of Death Cab. In fact, I only really went to see Tegan and Sara, but decided to stay to see how they were live. The sound was already messed up going in and out for all the bands, so that sucked. But Tegan and Sara were great, they performed well and were entertaining even when just talking to the crowd. Death Cab just seemed to be playing the same song over and over again, most of the vocals were muddled, and the performance was akin to a garage band, but without the soul. I had heard that they were really great live, so maybe I just felt a little let down. I guess the fireworks were a nice way to end it though.

  • DC for C and T &S were AMAZING!

    by Kaytee8033 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

OMG! I would love to see those three bands in concert again. The venue was absolutly amazing! I loved the show! I had a blast!

  • Amazing Experience!

    by Ziggy123 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely one of the best concerts i have ever been to! With the LA Phil, the fireworks and even the opening bands, this concert was unforgettable. I love Death Cab! Definitely be at their next LA show!

  • Fireworks + LA Philharmonics + DCFC!

by LadySara on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, lots of surprises including the fireworks at the end and also incorporating the LA philharmonic orchestra!

  • Amazing

by Luzy on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing show !!!! Both Death Cab and the opening acts were great and the philharmonics were the cherry on top. Oh, and the fireworks were beautiful.

  • Death Cab: My head almost exploded with joy

by muziqu on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The show was phenomenal. With Tegan & Sara opening up for Death Cab, the night exceeded my expectations. DCFC had two acts in their set. The second act they were accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It doesn't get any more epic than that. Except for the amazing fireworks show that took place during the finale. The Hollywood Bowl made the show even that more enjoyable. I've seen hundreds of bands, and none really live up to their recording reputation. I can say that DCFC sounds INCREDIBLE live. It's almost like listening to the CD in your car, but better :)

  • Death Cab o.k., didn't fully capitalize on LA Phil

by Indiechic on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

New Pornographers were first up, and they did not give a good live performance, at all. The venue was just most likely too big for them. Tegan and Sara were up next, and they were good, though again, this big venue kind of swallowed them up. Their schtick was endearing and they sounded good, though everything sounded just like it does on their albums, nothing different and cool for their live show. Death Cab was a disappointment. Ben Gibbard's stage presence left something to be desired, and it was like "The O.C." hits redux. The coolest part of the whole show was when the LA Philharmonic took the stage with Death Cab, but they came in more than half way through the set, and the arrangements didn't sound as well-rehearsed and tight as they could have been. For example, the brass instruments drowned out Gibbard, which could have been solved in a rehearsal level-check. Overall, I was disappointed with this show. None of these bands really made the evening and the pricetag worth it.

  • death cab is all grown up

  • Low Key but Powerful

by Parent on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

A great night of music. Death Cab is low key but musically excellent and Ben Hibbard brings great intensity to every song to overcome the vastness of the Bowl. The LA Phil added an interesting lushness that even my teenage sons appreciated.

  • Death Cab for LA Phil

by Madsley on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

We were stoked about Death Cab collaborating with LA Phil, but they played the first 10 or so songs without them! Then LA Phil came on stage and they played 5 or 6 songs, but everything except the horn section was drowned out by the drums and guitars. The last song, played on piano with backing by LA Phil was the only song where the collaboration seemed to work. The fireworks finale was really nice and made up for the somewhat bland experience.

  • Tegan and Sara Rocked

This was my first time seeing T n S as well as Death Cab. I had...WE...had a fantastic time!!! Seeing concerts at the Hollywood Bowl is the best place to see performances. You can take your own wine, or favorite beverage and take a picnic basket. COOOL!!! I will definitely go again!! I can not wiat to see Tegan and Sara again!!

  • Perfect

by Pixelie on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first time at the venue and it was beautiful I loved the atmosphere and the music was fabulous. It couldn't have been better. I loved how the venue was outdooors and that we were allowed to bring our own picnics. The bus system was also very helpful because it helps reduce the crowds in the parking lot after the show. I would definitely come here again for another concert.

  • Great show, capped-off with beautiful fireworks!

by pfelser on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Was a little surprised that the Phil did not play with them for more songs. But still a great show. They played a pretty good variety of songs from different albums. And the fireworks during Transatlanticism definitely thrilled the crowd.

  • Awesome show!

by Nenaslug on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The New Pornographers started the night right and put us in the mood for some awesome music. Tegan and Sara followed and they were awesome. They sang all my favorites plus some new ones. Their banter between songs was funny and light-hearted. Death Cab for Cutie was amazing. Their set without the LA Philharmonic was great. The band really connected with the audience. They sang the favorites plus some older and newer songs that weren't as familiar. When the LA Philharmonic came on stage it worked fairly well. The only thing I would have changed was to turn up the singers' mics to hear the words better over the orchestra. The last song plus fireworks was an awesome finale! I would definitely see these bands again, and I would defintely go to the Hollywood Bowl again!

  • Tegan and Sara are AMAZING!

I've never heard of The New Pornographers before this but I'm glad to say that they are a very cool band and they definitely have my support :) I wish them all the good luck! Tegan & Sara were beyond amazing!!..if only they played LONGER!! I'm a hugeee fan of theirs and it was wonderful to hear them live and actually see them! I came to the concert mainly for them! And of course Death Cab was awesome as well! They definitely delivered! Very fun concert! :)

  • Disappointing to Say the Least

by NWVG on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Death Cab for Cutie quite a few times before as well as just Ben on his solo tour, and I've always been left mesmerized by their concerts. The last time at the Nokia Theatre I was so impressed on how long they played for and how great they played in what was such a big arena compared to the other times I had seen them. This time I was really looking forward to the combination of them with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. However the end result was a concert that seemed way under rehearsed and just all over the place sound wise. I've enjoyed The New Pornographers before, but this time they sounded like mumbling muppets due to the microphone levels not being high enough and just the entire speaker system being turned up too high to the point where everything just sounded muffled. The sound problems were fixed once Tegan and Sarah came to the stage, and they provided a really nice energetic set. From the start Death Cab for Cutie was off with the drum level extremely high to the point where you couldn't hear the vocals or anything other than the annoying thump thump of the drum. I think it was Ben who kept improvising in the middle of songs with weird guitar pedal effects that were never in the actual song and were way out of place in songs that are so familiar to fans who have listened to them time and time again. After playing a few songs they took a break and the LA Philharmonic joined them. I was hoping the show would redeem itself at this point, but it only got worse. Every single song the LA Philharmonic would just play loud and obnoxious music that didn't even go with the song. The worst part were the random horns that would happen in songs that only needed the string section of the orchestra. The worst song had to be "I Will Follow You Into the Dark", which only needed a guitar yet the Philharmonic kept adding additional sounds to it that just didn't fit the song in any sense of the word.
