About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

An amazing show by all performers. I had never heard Tegan and Sara before last night and now I am a huge fan. I really love when the LASO collaborates with rock bands at these shows. It would be amazing to hear Radiohead do this. My only complaint was that Death Cab For Cutie didn't play an encore. What's up with that?

  • One of the best concert I have been to.

by MWinLA on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it! Loved the opening bands, New Pornographers and Tegan & Sara. Loved LA Philharmonic and the fireworks. Most of all, LOVE Death Cab for Cutie!!!

  • Definition of Perfection

    by coo1dud3 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I dont think anything could've been better about this show. I had probably the best concert ever and especially because death cab for cutie is my favorite music group. The fireworks in the end literally gave me the chills as it went along perfectly to the song. The LA philharmonic orchestra provided an unforgettable compilation.

  • Deatch Cab for Cutie was Great!

    by mishla25 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The Hollywood Bowl is one of my favorites venues', like the fact that is a great place to go during summer, and what is even better is that you can bring your fav botltle of wine and enjoy the show. Loved Tegan and Sara, Death Cab for CUtie was great specially the last song was amazing by having the fireworks.

  • Another great show at the Bowl

    by Jmanny56 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was an overall amazing show. As always the New Pornographers rocked, although Neko Case is no longer with the band, they still but on a great set. I would have like to see them play a little longer. Now I will say this upfront I am not a T&S fan. That being said I enjoyed them, they are very funny and sounded great. They did not make a fan out of me, but I have a new found respect for they music. What can I say about Death cab, They are without a doubt one of my favorite bands, I have seen them a number of time and I jumped at the opportunity to see them with the LA Phil. I was lucky enough to see the Bright Eyes show with the Phil in 2007 and knew that this Death Cab show would be something spacial. I was a little disappointed that the Phil was not on stay for the whole show (as was the case with the Bright Eyes show). They did a short 6 song set before bringing the Phil on. The songs the picked went great, as I had predicated the Phil set opened with "I will follow You into the Dark" I was blown away by how great they sounded. The closer Transatlanticism was the perfect ending and the firework at the end summed up what all 16000 of us where feeling, this is pure magic!

  • Outstanding show! The night was absolutely magical

by Jessyjess on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Death Cab For Cutie was incredible. The LA Phil made the night even more spellbounding. My only grib is that The New Pornographers had the shortest set I think possible. They could have easily cut off some of Tegan and Sara and given a little more time to The New Pornographers. Tegan and Sara were great though. The whole night was fantastic!!!

  • What a disappointment.

by SarahJean on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

This should could have been good. SHOULD have been good. But wasn't at all. Death Cab was supposed to play with the L.A. Philharmonic but played twelve songs before the Philharmonic even came out on stage. Once the orchestra DID enter the picture, I understood why they only played six songs together. Everything sounded extremely unrehearsed and poorly arranged. The sound mix was terrible and the band seemed distracted. I left the show feeling irritated and very disappointed.

  • Misbilled

by nerdtacular on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The LA Philharmonic only played with Death Cab for half of the set. Kind of dissapointing. Fireworks were pretty tho.

  • A great night of Indie pop

by lincbeans on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

This was my second time seeing death cab, and once again they proved to be one of favorite bands to see live, and the la phil added another dimension to their stellar performance, also some nice pyrotechnics at the end helped as well. I was really looking forward to seeing the new pornographers, who were excellent, although you could tell the sound was not yet at its potential, and they could have played a little longer. Tegan and Sara were also pretty good, and how can you not like those two with their charming bedside manner.

  • Death Cab For Cutie: amazing.

by Camp on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The band comes out on stage and are captivating from the moment you see them until at least three days later. It's the morning after and I still can't shake this feeling of euphoria. I cannot wait to see them again. Until then, I'll be replaying this show in my head, over and over.

  • Fun show

    by mcfly80 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time at the Hollywood Bowl, and it was a good show to start out with. Death Cab delivered a good performance and the opening acts were great. My only issue with the event was the loud teenage girls nearby who were talking and singing over the performers. A fun night out, all in all.

  • Death Cab Fireworks

by JeRonronne on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The unexpected fireworks were awesome!! Wonderful finale. The overall concert wasn't that great though (a llittle boring) and unfortunately because of people talking and because the sound wasn't loud enough, we couldn't hear a lot of the New Pornographers or Tegan and Sara - especially when they were talking.

  • Awesome

    by JW1234 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 2nd concert in total, and it was pretty good. I liked how they paired up with the LA Philharmonic, although some parts of the Philharmonic did not match the music, but over all it was pretty good. I thought that was really unique of them. Lastly, the fireworks were amazing! I did not expect that at all, and it even went with the song.

  • Good show, not the best.

by sherrizzle on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

New Pornographers . . . great! Tegan and Sara . . . awesome! But leave it up to Ben Gibbard to leave you confused and a little hurt. For those of you who don't know, Ben Gibbard (if not all of Death Cab) hates LA/So Cal. This performance at The Bowl made that really apparent. No cute little chat with the crowd, playing for his band really, no covers, NO ENCORE!!! If you look at Youtube videos of Death Cab shows they're really funny, very witty and intimate. Now I know 17000 people isn't intimate but try! You're Death Cab for god sake! If it weren't for the seats I were in I'd be livid! Some people paid $300 + for a ticket and Death Cab only plays 1 hour and 15 min set!!! For that price I'd rather fly up to WA and watch a little show of theirs where they actually like the crowd and then fly home. The only real reason why Death Cab even did this concert (the only show/concert Death Cab did/will do in So Cal this tour) is probably because Ben Gibbard's fiance is from LA (Zooey Deschanel). Most performances at The Hollywood Bowl that I've gone to for example Belle and Sebatian and The LA Phil, that concert wasn't even sold out and they still put out a 5 song encore! I hope Death Cab soon realizes that they cannot pick and choose where their fans come from and understand that a fan is a fan.

  • Death Cab does it Again for Cutie

by forceofnature on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

When it comes to live performances, Death Cab never fails to entertain their fans. With The New Pornographers and Tegan and Sara opening for them, the mood was set for a spectacular night even with Ben Gibbard always moving and dancing to the tunes of his lyrics; the emotion behind the words in his head are played out in his actions. When the LA Philharmoic came out to play songs like Soul Meets Body and I Will Follow You in the Dark, the crowd cheered and the night became even more majestic. To cap it off, fireworks exploded into the sky on the last song, Your Heart is An Empty Room (I believe).

  • Death Cab for Cutie was unforgettable!!!

    by 86Endo on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show... great finale with Transatlantism with fireworks... Their set was accompanied by the LA Philharmonic! Another amazing plus! Just an all out great night! And who doesn't love the Hollywood Bowl? :)

  • Bad sound tech

    by Guiguy2 on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

Whoever was the head soundtech for last night's show at the bowl needs to be fired. Ben Gibbard's voice was barely coming through (this was true for all the bands) and the Sound for the New Pornographers kept going in and out. Furthermore, the LA Phil was badly arranged and barely came through in the last half of the set-- luckily, the charisma of the three bands saved the show. On a more positive note, things came together quite well during the last song.

  • Fireworks make everything better!!

by Fireflied on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The weather was perfect as the New Pornographers and Tegan and Sara came out to play. They both did alright. NP could have been the old Dakota Motor Co. and Tegan & Sara are totally cute. The sound was terrible, but I had high hopes that things would get better when Death Cab came out. Soon the sun set and the stage began to glow spectacular colors. I was in the VERY BACK, but dead center with my binoculars and zoomy camera. Well, the sound never improved. It kept going in and out. This does not seem like a typical Hollywood Bowl problem. Usually the sound is great. Death Cab guy talks like a girl and sings off key sometimes.... They took a break to bring in the orchestra and I started to feel tingly all over. I wanted to hear it!! Unfortunately, the sound was STILL off and the orchestra was so brassy, it kind of ruined it for me....until the last song.. it finally sounded GOOD... and then.... low and behold.... the stage caught on FIRE!!!!! And then all of a sudden the most beautiful and spectacular fire works went off!!!!! And the song kept going. And it was glorious. It would have been worth the $25.00 just to see that. I enjoyed the whole night and so did the 3 with me. We also recommend that you take the shuttle from the zoo.... do not be foolish and try to PARK at the Bowl! Also: be prepared to ask those around you to stop smoking pot. Yuck!

  • Perfect is the best word

by LoveLee on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The performance on July 5th was unforgettable. The New Pornographers opened which began the mood of fun music. Following them was Tegan and Sara who were quirky, funny and played songs that I immediately went home and bought. Finally, Death Cab for Cutie took the stage and I was blown away. Opening with 'Marching Bands of Manhattan' I was fully engaged. One of the most powerful songs was when they played 'I Will Possess Your Heart.' They played the full intro and the music began to envelop all of the Hollywood Bowl. Finishing with 'Transatlanticism,' there was a perfect balance to the performance that when it ended, there was a sense of finality to it. Asking for an encore wasn't even necessary. Also, they added mesmerizing fireworks that were cued to the song. All in all, it was a perfect ending to a great performance. I would definitely do it all again.

  • One of a kind Death Cab show

by wildmallet on 7/6/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Death Cab For Cutie played an amazing show and the opening bands were very good as well. A lot of times the opening bands are take it or leave it for me, but I'm stoked we got to see Tegan and Sara and I only know a couple of their tunes. Looks like I need to go get some more. I only have two complaints about the show. First, the audience was a total dud. A lot of the people around me were just sitting there like bored robots. I'm thinking why did you come here. Second, the sound was way too quiet. I could talk at a low volume and be heard. When I was singing along to DCFC I felt like I needed to sing quietly so I didn't bug the bored robots around me. Besides that it was amazing to see DCFC with the LA Philharmonic and the finale with fireworks syncronized to the music was a big surprise.
