The Dance Theater of Harlem ensemble was entertaining as well as technically and artistically fulfilling also. I wish it was a little longer although but that would have been my only criticism

I never been to a "live" Ballet performance before. I really enjoyed this and will come again.

My daughter and I have attended many dance performances throughout the years. I can honestly say the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble gave the most amazing performance we've ever seen. Their strength, control and technique were beyond compare and the dancers joy and love of ballet was evident. We were so caught up in their ballets, that we did not want the performance to end. I hope they return to our city soon.

We saw the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble last Thursday at the Madame Walker Theatre. They were sensational! The first half of the show consisted more of classical ballet with beautiful choreography and talented dancing. The second half I would describe as jazz ballet--ballet creatively combined with some jazz and contemporary dance moves. which the troupe very successfully performed. Incredibly, the music of James Brown and Aretha Franklin were artistically and playfully brought to life. It was a truly amazing and fun evening for all ending with a standing ovation that could have lasted even longer than it did. Thank you for a wonderful and inspiring evening!

I am an avid follower of DTH and I have never been disappointed. They are awesome; the show was, as usual, excellent!!!!

  • DC Loves You, DTHE!

by Anonymous on 6/16/11Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Watching the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble was one of the best birthday gifts I could've given myself. I am a dancer and it has always been a dream of mine to be a dancer for DTH; seeing them live again reminded me why. Their return to the world of dance is a stunning one, and I am so excited for them to return professionally in 2012. Although it has become more diverse, DTHE still proves to the world that people of color are just as talented as companies like Joffery, ABT, and Miami City Ballet. This was a wonderful performance, brining together people from all walks of life and introducing them to the world of ballet. DTHE received a sea of roars and a standing ovation, which was definitely well deserved.

  • Ecstatic Moments Marred by Too Much Talking

    by ese3go on 4/4/11Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

I was excited about this event. However, way too much time was spent on some silly audience participation as well as discussion and presentation of information about the dancers' training and experience with the company. I was only interested in a performance and I was annoyed. It felt like work. The performance began a little late and talking took up probably half of the time. The pieces performed were excellent and moving. The competence of the dancers was impeccable; the music was wonderful. There was a minimalism that I found exceptionally beautiful and enjoyable in a couple of the pieces. While the performance involving pieces by James Brown and Aretha Franklin demonstrated the full range of the dancers' skill, I could have skipped it. Because so much funding is being taken out of the arts, it is necessary for artists to go to new and extreme measures to involve perhaps a wider audience. It's a sad fact.

  • DTH entertaining

by Misemme on 4/3/11Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

This performance was a wonderful display of talent. The format of the show was very different than I have experienced from a dancer performance. The narration was informative and attention grabbing. Lovely choice of artists for this venue. The only distraction is that this stage looked a little too small for a few pieces.

  • Surprised

by joamey on 4/3/11Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I had wanted to see the Dance Theater of Harlem for many years and was somewhat surprised by their performance. I had assumed that the troupe would be all African American and would do modern dance. I certainly was not disappointed by the performance, though. I loved their modern interpretation of ballet, especially the lovely "Episode," which so well illustrated the ups and downs of relationships. I also loved the interactive nature of the show. It's a "must-see."

I would like to applaud the collaboration of Elvi Moore and Virginia Johnson in particular in bringing the DTH to WDC to showcase its revival in splendid and rare form. I thoroughly enjoyed each dance with the exception of "Episode" which overwhelmed me with emotion and intrigue. In light of the fact that DTH was composed a small dance ensemble, the dance selections, choreography, the artistic talent , and dance performances captivated the collective souls of both the dancers and the audience.

  • OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!

by BonBonJ on 3/30/11Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was outstanding. The dancers were so captivating, entertaining and professional. I thoroughly enjoyed the different types of dance moves incorporated into ballet. Tony Savoy is new to the Dance Theatre of Harlem, but he danced like he has been with the group for years. He was just fantastic... and that smile just lit up the room (even in the dark). Chocolate (Ingrid) was delicious. Davon and Flavia were mesmerizing. Fredrick and Charles were like two sculptured pieces of work gliding across the floor. Mayuko and David were so graceful and entertaining. I have never seen anyone dance to Popcorn like Ashley. And I could go and on about the rest. They were just magnificent. I am so glad that I attended the performance. If they come back... so will I.

I recently saw the Alvin Ailey Dancers at the Kennedy Center. It lit the fire to seek out the Dance Theatre of Harlem. I couldn't believe how fortunate I was when I learned they would be in the DC area after almost eight years. I must say the Dance Theatre of Harlem troupe was by far a more brilliant presentation. The dancers are amazing and truly talented. I loved the diversity of the troupe and the apparent love they have for their artestry. What a wonderful event!
