Opening act better than main event

by Fisterus on 7/18/09Montalvo - Saratoga

Son Volt did 70 minutes and got a standing ovation. As opening acts go, they were topnotch. Cowboy Junkies (whose concerts we've been going to for over 20 years) turned in a fairly lackluster (for them) performance. They played for perhaps 80 minutes, did only one encore number, and were gone.

Margo and Cowboy Junkies Rock SD!

by bkdgu on 7/18/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Margo Timmons who is one of the most beautiful singers in looks and voice mesmerized the crowd at Humphreys Wednesday night as the Cowboy Junkies played 1 1/2 hours without intermission. San Diego is one of her favorite venues so she was in top form in appreciation of the enthusiastic crowd. She sang a few songs from their upcoming album mixed in with their repertoire from the last 25 years. The highlight of the concert was her changing the playlist after requests from the crowd and playing "Sweet Jane" which was featured in the film Natural Born Killers and "Murder, Tonight, at the Trailer Park" which is always a crowd pleaser. I look forward to their next concert in San Diego and it is unfortunate that the music business no longer gives the deserved visibility to groups like Cowboy Junkies.

Beautiful Night, Venue, and Super Expensive Beer

by Bootboiler on 7/18/09Montalvo - Saratoga

Beer cost 9$ for a single Lauganitas IPA, american beer was $8. That is ~75 Cents a an ounce. Water was $4. Crazy -- Live Nation, the Promoter was out of control. Everyone treated Son Volt like the walk up band, which really sucks. The Band seemed a bit miffed about it and it showed in their play, they never really seemed to get going, and just when I thought the song was going to take off and rock, it ended. It was clear to me that Margo is Margo's biggest fan, I feel asleep.

    Wow, what a treat!

by stargeezer on 7/18/09Montalvo - Saratoga

It took the sound guy 4 or 5 songs to get the mix sorted out, but after that it was great. (Margo kept going over to talk to him during the first few songs) Old favorites with some very new songs mixed in. A very nice acoustic set in the middle. What a great venue for the Junkies, I'm so glad Montalvo went back to doing "real" music again.

    Outragious show

    by willow1 on 7/18/09Montalvo - Saratoga

Son Volt opened and was great. What a voice! And icing on the cake was Margo's sultry sound. The venue is fantastic, and they actually serve decent wine. Perfect summer night and show.

    Cowboy Junkies - awesome

by DD123344 on 7/17/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I have been a CJ fan for many years. I have most of their early albums but I have not heard much from them recently and they had dropped down my playlist when I saw the advertisement for the concert at Humphreys. I wasn't sure what to expect but I have to tell you - they are one of the best live bands I have seen. I think their live work is better than the studio. The chemistry between the siblings is phenomenal and the music is extremely creative and artistic for lack of a better word. Tons of distortion, great range and variety - At times it sounds electronic without even a keyboard. Layer on Margo's voice and you've got a great effect. CJ were paired with Son Volt which played an incredible set as well. All in all a wonderful night.

by Vermin on 7/17/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I have alway been a Junkies fan and have made love to their music many times. Son Volt was a surprise and I thought they were fantastic. These guys are going places. You cant beat Humphry's on the Bay.

    Cowboy Junkies

by SBCA90740 on 7/17/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

They were fantastic as usual - but why did Son Volt (the opening act) play longer than the headliner. That was very disappointing!

    Sultry Junkies at Humphreys

by birdie6 on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

First time I heard Cowboy Junkies, I've been wanting to go for years. The voice and music was so sultry and real. I loved it! Nice venue-small and fresh. Could have done without the funky background visual, kinda distracting. Will be there next year.

I went to see Son Volt and they were extraordinary

by Obiwan on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Son Volt played some great new songs, but I was waiting in vain for Jet Pilot and Atmosphere.

    CJ delivers yet again!

by neece on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Amazing vocals from Margo, tight & clean sound from the boys, loved the Neil Young cover! Good to see Margo in action with the kids and like the fact that she is so real on stage, just like the rest of us...but, wish that Son Volt had not been so hungover, they were a train wreck for most of their set, it picked up at the end, though...more time should have been given to Cowboy Junkies and less to Son Volt...

Cowboy Junkies put on a horrible show!!!

by Musiclover9 on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

We were excited to see and hear this show as we have seen the Cowboy Junkies many times but were very disappointed. They just weren't into putting on a good show. There was just not any energy in their music. When an artist comes on and says that they are tired from playing with their kids that's a very bad sign. Also, don't sit down to play your guitars or harps. We had to walk out, along with others, after their 3rd song. This is the second horrible show we have seen in 3 weeks. What's happening? Don't know if we'll go back to Humphreys for awhile. Thank goodness for the opening act, Son Volt.

    Solid 1-2 Punch!

by SDERDOC on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Son Volt sounded great > Unfortunately, due to time constraints they weren't able to really dig into catalog. However, there was a good mix of new and old. Sound was excellent.. Overall, they are the perfect band to enjoy while sitting outside and drinking a cold beer as the sun sets in the SD Bay! CBJ sounded great as always! Played new music which sounded really good the first time through. Really engaging witht the audience which was really cool. Great Venue!

Perfect Combination of bands, Did Margo pick it?

by Mdav42 on 7/16/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Memory of Sun Volt came back to me as soon as I heard the lead singers voice. I enjoyed the words and lyrics of there songwriting. They were also a great warm up for Cowboy Junkies. What can I say other than their music being perfect, Margo, altho dropped a line or two which made things more real and a few smiles, she was just amazing. I lover her and have for quite some time. She probably doesnt remember, but I got the oppurtunity to hug her 10 years ago in Seattle on the pier after thier show. I heard several comments from people around me at Humphrey's that "she is the new Stevie Nicks" or "She is mesmerizing" I sat in the second row to her left with the ray ban sunglasses on most of the night. I felt connected to the music, the songwriting, and definitely Margo's voice, smile and sensuous style.

    Cowboy Junkies need to retire

    by Bruno76 on 7/13/09Ogden Theatre - Denver

I have waited 10 years to see this band....I clearly missed them in the height of there glory. Her voice is still amazing and I do like the music however some of the songs I have never even heard of and none of the classics were played. It was boring to hear her talk about her 6 year old child and how she needed to go. I understand they are truely talented but, come on it is still a show not a trip to your aunt Margrets house to chat it up about a 6 year old. She stated she was tired and had been on the road so that is why i made the statment just retire. Leave the good music you have made and ride off into the wind with your child and enjoy life. If you are going to put on a show then put on a show just don't bring me down in the process.

    Cowboy Junkies at last

by DeniseI on 7/10/09Ogden Theatre - Denver

Although they're not a big group, they are amazing musicians and gave us fans a wonderful evening of soulful, heart-felt music. It was great to hear some of their new stuff that is not yet out. Can't wait. They even offered to come out to the lobby after the show to "chat". Wish we could have hung around for that.

    Mellow night at the Ogden

    by Bogart126 on 7/10/09Ogden Theatre - Denver

Son Volt's singer Jay Farrar has a very distinctive voice. Their music makes me think of sitting on a porch watching the sun move across the sky, taking a sip of whiskey every now and then. It's very calming and relaxing. However, all their songs sound very similar and it would be nice for them to change their arrangements a bit more for their concerts. Cowboys Junkies lead singer Margo's silky, dreamy voice sometimes made me want to fall asleep. Margo also doesn't need to tell the audience that she's tired and needs to go to bed b/c she's old and a mom. You're a rock start baby, suck it up. The lead guitar player's psychedelic screechings were well done and appreciated.

    Good

by jdude on 7/9/09Ogden Theatre - Denver

I traveled from Austin to Denver to see Son Volt. It's the seventh time I've seen them and it was their first concert after their album release. I thought it was a good show. Kinda like the others. Which is why I keep going back. Farrar's lyrics are second to none. Chris Masterson is underutilized as a guitarist--that guy can play. I want him to let loose some. They did let him go a little crazy at the end of one song--I forget which. I was glad for that, they should do more of that. The drummer's good and a nice guy. Steel guitar--nice addition. I bought the new CD at the show and have been enjoying it since I got back today. Coal Miner. They should always play that. Especially near mountains. And Voo Doo Candle. And others. I wondered why they even bothered with some songs. Like they played crap ones just to have the better ones sound even better. Farrar seemed to be in a good mood--seemingly in a better mood than I've seen him. I want him to expain some of the meaning behind the songs or why he wrote them, every once in a while. Cowboy Junkies are super. Wow. The singer has mad vocal skills. They were so polished compared to Son Volt. Maybe Son Volt needs a better producer. The oriental rugs were a nice touch. And their dress--all class.
