Columbus Crew History

The Columbus Crew holds the distinction of being introduced in 1994 as the first of 10 inaugural MLS clubs. In 1999, the club further etched its place in American sports history when it played its first game at the former Historic Crew Stadium, the country's first major-league stadium built specifically for soccer.

On the pitch, the team's first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Crew's first MLS Cup trophy came in 2008 with the team also securing the Supporters' Shield that season led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The midfielder won the league's MVP award in 2008, and he wrapped things up that season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final. The Crew followed that up by winning the Supporters' Shield in 2009.

In the 2020 season, the club focused on competing globally with the signing of players like Lucas Zelarayan and Darlington Nagbe to add quality, and coupled with veteran talent like Gyasi Zardes team captain Jonathan Mensah, the Crew took home their second-ever MLS Cup trophy. Zelarayan, who had been named the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year, registered two goals and one assist against Seattle Sounders FC 3-0, also securing 2020 MLS Cup MVP honors. In 2023, Columbus hoisted the MLS Cup for a third time behind an MVP performance by forward Cucho Hernández.

Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field

The 2022 MLS season marked the first full season for the Crew at Lower.com Field - a dynamic and new soccer-specific stadium in the heart of Columbus in the Astor Park neighborhood.

In 2021, the Black & Gold moved into Lower.com Field, which has a capacity for 20,371 supporters and includes seats that are as much as 28 feet closer to the pitch than any of the seats at Historic Crew Stadium. A defining feature of the stadium is a 220,000 square-foot canopy that covers all supporters during the match, providing shelter from weather conditions throughout the season. The New Nordecke at Lower.com Field is located on the north end of the stadium and is the second-largest supporters section in MLS, with standing-only capacity for 3,364 supporters.

    Great Game!

by amberw9 on 7/19/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

It was a great game and it helps that the Crew won. The only thing that's sad is that the city of Columbus never supports its pro teams and they usually end up leaving. The Crew gets some support, but not nearly enough for as hard as they work.

    Good Soccer and Good fun!!!

by TSIGuy on 7/17/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

Every season my son, who is now eight, and I travel to Columbus to catch a couple CREW games. We live about 90 minutes from the stadium, but are always rewarded with a great time. The activities for the kids before the game usually mean we show up 2 hours prior to the start to fully enjoy the experience. Of course they won this game which makes the 90 minutes back home fly by. Thanks for providing a place where a father and son can build some memories.

Great way to spend the evening

by TheOldFolks on 7/17/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game....and the fans. Fantastic stadium! Only complaint was that the sun was in our eyes for about 3/4 of the game which made it difficult to see exactly what was going on! It might have been better if the game had been played in the afternoon!

    Crew Wins!

by cincycatz on 7/16/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

The game was amazing. The crew came from behind to beat Chivas. Getting to the stadium was easy, finding a parking spot was easy, and the staff was helpful. I have been to many crew games and will continue to go to them in the future! GO CREW!

    Crew game was awesome!!

by IronGirl on 7/16/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

This was my first time at a MLS event and was blown away. My daughter had the privledge to play on the field with her select team before the game and was in awe. We had great seats and the atmosphere was so energizing. We have tickets to the Crew game against LA Galaxy in September and can't wait. We bought my daughter a t-shirt after the game and will be back for others. Great experience that I was able to share with my daughter that is priceless to me.

    Awesome Game

by Pumajones7664 on 7/15/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

This was my sons first Crew game, he is 6. It was great! He kept asking questions but was very observant of the game. We bought a horn, food and everything was awesome. Only downside is 'Houligans'. Dont get me wrong, they were pretty loud and great chants. But we may have sat a little to close to them, with my son. Overall a great experience, especially since they won.

Seeing soccer live is a must!

by Dadetal on 7/8/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

If you're a typical American like me that doesn't get the international craze for soccer from watching it on TV, go see it live. The narrow focus that television brings to the sport is an injustice to the game. By watching a live performance you have the opportunity to see the plays develop. You can catch the man sprinting to the clear for a pass, watch how the offensive works in rhythm, and get a feel for the personalities involved. TV misses a great share of the real action. I had my first experience with this years ago when I saw the Russians play the U.S. team in the Orange Bowl and forgot how exciting and refreshing the sport truly is. Columbus and D.C. United put on quite a show. Just fill up before going to the game because concession prices are ridiculous (i.e., $4.00 for a 20 ounce bottle of water). It's like baseball but with continuous action. Don't expect a lot of side show entertainment. The focus is on the game.

The atmosphere at Crew Stadium is amazing!

by WittSinger on 7/7/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

I went to the Columbus Crew vs. D.C. United soccer game on the 4th of July and it was awesome! The Crew fans are amazing! Especially the crazy corner where they never stop cheering and singing songs and such. There is not a bad seat in that stadium and the Crew are an amazing team. They were not the MLS champions last year for nothing!
