Columbus Crew History

The Columbus Crew holds the distinction of being introduced in 1994 as the first of 10 inaugural MLS clubs. In 1999, the club further etched its place in American sports history when it played its first game at the former Historic Crew Stadium, the country's first major-league stadium built specifically for soccer.

On the pitch, the team's first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Crew's first MLS Cup trophy came in 2008 with the team also securing the Supporters' Shield that season led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The midfielder won the league's MVP award in 2008, and he wrapped things up that season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final. The Crew followed that up by winning the Supporters' Shield in 2009.

In the 2020 season, the club focused on competing globally with the signing of players like Lucas Zelarayan and Darlington Nagbe to add quality, and coupled with veteran talent like Gyasi Zardes team captain Jonathan Mensah, the Crew took home their second-ever MLS Cup trophy. Zelarayan, who had been named the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year, registered two goals and one assist against Seattle Sounders FC 3-0, also securing 2020 MLS Cup MVP honors. In 2023, Columbus hoisted the MLS Cup for a third time behind an MVP performance by forward Cucho Hernández.

Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field

The 2022 MLS season marked the first full season for the Crew at Lower.com Field - a dynamic and new soccer-specific stadium in the heart of Columbus in the Astor Park neighborhood.

In 2021, the Black & Gold moved into Lower.com Field, which has a capacity for 20,371 supporters and includes seats that are as much as 28 feet closer to the pitch than any of the seats at Historic Crew Stadium. A defining feature of the stadium is a 220,000 square-foot canopy that covers all supporters during the match, providing shelter from weather conditions throughout the season. The New Nordecke at Lower.com Field is located on the north end of the stadium and is the second-largest supporters section in MLS, with standing-only capacity for 3,364 supporters.

    Crew Game

by Victoria on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

My brother and I really enjoyed watching the Crew in action. Our seats were great. The only thing that took away from the experience was the loud cursing we heard by fellow spectators. Unfortunately because of this I wouldn't consider bringing my young nieces or nephews to a game, which I would love to be able to do.

    Crew Game was FUN

by Wendellinni on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

The game was GREAT! The Crew had their chances to score but blew most of them. The refs were terrible! There were some calls that I had never seen before. Incredible! We did the family fun pack. The refreshment couldn't keep up with demand for popcorn.

    Columbus is pacing

by gocrew on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

The trip to Columbus is a 2-3 hour drive, we have often discussed season tickets if we were Columbus residents. Once there we are always treated well to an entertaining match. My feel for the Crew so far this year is there are pacing themselves, not as sharp as last year...hopefully yet. DC made the most of control and were unlucky not to win, but the stadium gave us great seats in the upper deck are like every seat in the facitity...Good entertainment and a great facilty.

    Our seats were great!

by Cathy on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

This is the first time we went to see the Columbus Crew and it was a really fun time. Despite the fact that there was a constant drizzle of rain we still enjoyed ourselves! We were in Section 102 which was really great but a little too close to the "fan" section that had a few inappropriate things to say to the other team since we had two children with us! But, next time we will know and not sit so close to that section!

    Columbus Crew Soccer

by ErnDawg1 on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

Great game, high level soccer, and little drizzle but worth it. Put a damper on the fireworks. Some of the officials calls were a little suspect. Didn't get the win but saved a tie.

    Fight for First

by RnROutlaw on 7/5/09Columbus Crew Stadium - Columbus

DC United visited the second place Columbus Crew to defend their position atop the Eastern Conference. Often agressive and physical, both teams played sound defense while also creating scoring opportunities. A few sprinkles did little to dampen the crowd's enthusiasm. DC scored the only goal of the first half. Columbus answered with one of their own in the second. The game finished with a 1:1 draw between these two combatants. A fireworks display capped the 4th of July event.
