Columbus Crew History

The Columbus Crew holds the distinction of being introduced in 1994 as the first of 10 inaugural MLS clubs. In 1999, the club further etched its place in American sports history when it played its first game at the former Historic Crew Stadium, the country's first major-league stadium built specifically for soccer.

On the pitch, the team's first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Crew's first MLS Cup trophy came in 2008 with the team also securing the Supporters' Shield that season led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The midfielder won the league's MVP award in 2008, and he wrapped things up that season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final. The Crew followed that up by winning the Supporters' Shield in 2009.

In the 2020 season, the club focused on competing globally with the signing of players like Lucas Zelarayan and Darlington Nagbe to add quality, and coupled with veteran talent like Gyasi Zardes team captain Jonathan Mensah, the Crew took home their second-ever MLS Cup trophy. Zelarayan, who had been named the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year, registered two goals and one assist against Seattle Sounders FC 3-0, also securing 2020 MLS Cup MVP honors. In 2023, Columbus hoisted the MLS Cup for a third time behind an MVP performance by forward Cucho Hernández.

A defining feature of the stadium is a 220,000 square-foot canopy that covers all supporters during the match, providing shelter from weather conditions throughout the season. Great Game

by Sprucecreekfly on 9/21/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

Extremely exciting game. Crew had the lead all the way to the final few seconds. I do not understand why the crowd does not see the time clock after they add on minutes. There should be another clock that appears on the scoreboard that shows the number of minutes remaining because minutes have been added. The surprise thing is no fun.

    My overall impression is

by joe on 8/24/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

I will start with the positive. The team was fun and exciting to watch. The stadium is very friendly, and the field looked emasculate. We sat in the second row near one of the corner flags, and I was impressed by how the open roof's overhang kept us dry. It looked like the top went just to the edge of the first row, but it still did a great job of keeping the rain from landing on us. Now for these reasons, I may never go back. We parked very close to the stadium near the railroad tracks. There is a long driveway from the main street where spectators enter the stadium, and there is no one at the entrance to assist with getting the cars in. It is a wonder that no one was hurt. You have cars trying to turn into the driveway and hundreds if not thousands of people crossing the entranceway on their way to the stadium. They had staff up close to the parking area collecting the money and chatting, but not one person was directing traffic at the entrance. I don't know if it is the city's responsibility or Columbus Crew Management to staff this parking lot. Still, it is something that Management should consider and resolve before someone is hurt. Second, do not, I repeat, do not waste your money on any of their food. In addition to the excessive prices, the quality is low grade, and that is saying it nicely. The hotdogs are very log quality and must have been sitting a long time, even though we bought them as soon as we entered the stadium. The cheeseburgers are even worst. They reminded me of some pre-frozen patties I purchased at Sam's Club twenty years ago. They were fully cooked but still a consistency of mush. The popcorn was not cooked on site. It is the kind you buy in large bags, and then they put in nice popcorn buckets to give to the customers. My son said that their pretzels were delicious. Third, they were honoring the veterans at this game which I think is excellent, but it was all lip service. Maybe I missed something, but I did not hear any mention of the Columbus Crew donating money or performing any service for any Veteran's Organization. I am a veteran, and I was offended by their attempts to make it look like they cared for those who severed our country. I am sure that there are several local Veteran organizations that Columbus Crew could actively support. We live in Michigan, and my sons follow the Columbus Crew. If we go back to any more Crew games, it won't be at the Columbus Crew Stadium. My overall impression is that the Columbus Crew Ownership is all about how much they can squeeze out of their fans, and I get that it is a business, and they need to turn a profit. You guys are doing a great job with the team and stadium, but you need to take care of this parking situation by the tracks near your stadium and upgrade your quality at the concessions. And lastly, if you want to be politically correct using the veterans, that's fine, but do more than say "thank you" for the PR.

The level of play is trash

by Ron on 8/24/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

The mls is like a second or third division level league anywhere else in the world, the level of play is terrible and very slow.

    Nice

    by Hank Loose on 7/24/22

As a German I have to say, that the prices are a bit...funny. The games for my team (Schalke 04, 1 Bundesliga) cost 12 Euros to get in. I guess your team needs to up its game to take those amounts. Otherwise it's great to have some real football in this city.

    Fun but overpriced

    by B on 7/20/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

We saw the Crew take on Cincinnati. It was our first game and I believe they hit a record attendance. Great energy in the stadium, the family had a blast. My primary complaint was the overpriced food. We tried the hot dogs, burgers, and nachos. All of it was terrible. These are very simple things that most stadiums can handle so I was surprised. Even the box of M&M’s tasted funny. Parking was a nightmare to get out as well. The game lasted 90min and we sat in our car for another 90min to get out of the parking area. If we live closer I would come to more games but we would eat before we come and hopefully find better parking.

    Awesome !!!!

by Pat on 6/21/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

Very memorable experience in spite of a tie versus Charloette. Beautiful new stadium. Good views from all seats in the facility. Shared with two adult sons, one of which was celebrating his double nickel birthday, and my wife. Sat in section 240 and didn't anticipate the strength and duration of the setting sun in the west. Great day, and, of course, it led directly to Fathers Day, and a wonderful finish at the US Open at the Country Club. Could not ask for more.......THANKS!

    Phenomenal Stadium, Accessibilty Shortcoming

by LJ Hess on 5/4/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

The new Crew stadium (Lower.com} construction is phenomenal. Accessibilty up to the stadium and throughout was very well planned and the overall atmosphere is the best you'll find in sports venues. However, it has shortcomings that could be easily be fixed. It was built into a hole of accessible property, so no close parking for common people. I asked the ticket office about handicapped parking - they said it is at Marconi .56 miles away. When I drove to the garage they said the shuttle is across the street but the elevators are at the opposite end of this garage. I walk w 2 canes so it is impossible to get the shuttle. Motorized shuttle pick ups come every other time (therefore every 30 min.) Plus I have no idea how a shuttle could move through the crowds. Other issues - there were no Ushers anywhere so people were sitting wherever they want, hard to approach those sitting in your purchased seats. Luckily I had a scooter and didn't need help. If I depended on shuttles and guest services it would not have been a good experience for myself and grandson.

    Needs improvement

by Benny beats on 4/5/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

The pricing is fair in MLS and sporting events in general. Like most sporting venues the seats are small. The thing that shocks me about this is the inability of Columbus sports venues to truly understand the value of a live game. Being both a crew and jackets fan, I have never seen a sold out crowd or anything remotely close. Even attending the Rick Nash Jersey retirement game with team record ticket sales. Seats were everywhere. Which brings me to the point. Reduce prices for capacity or make the seats comfortable for a guaranteed crowd. Parking is horrible, Historic Crew Stadium definitely had the advantage in this realm. Besides parking and seating the atmosphere is fantastic as is the quality of the teams play. The stadium is beautiful and makes you feel more United as you support your team. Even with my complaints I highly recommend going.

    Almost perfect

by Jesse E on 4/5/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

My two complaints were that handicapped parking was confusing and outside security was lacking. The stadium was perfect. Super staff, comfortable seating with great sightlines. Good concession selection, Very good experience once inside the stadium.

    Great Field, Great Team

by BC on 3/1/22Lower.com Field - Columbus

Beautiful field. Sat in section 238 at the top and it was a great view of the game. It was a cold day, but the roof would block any wind or other weather elements. Walked around the stadium and don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. Bar area, gift shop and concessions ran smooth and cashless.
