Columbus Crew History

The Columbus Crew holds the distinction of being introduced in 1994 as the first of 10 inaugural MLS clubs. In 1999, the club further etched its place in American sports history when it played its first game at the former Historic Crew Stadium, the country's first major-league stadium built specifically for soccer.

On the pitch, the team's first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Crew's first MLS Cup trophy came in 2008 with the team also securing the Supporters' Shield that season led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The midfielder won the league's MVP award in 2008, and he wrapped things up that season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final. The Crew followed that up by winning the Supporters' Shield in 2009.

In the 2020 season, the club focused on competing globally with the signing of players like Lucas Zelarayan and Darlington Nagbe to add quality, and coupled with veteran talent like Gyasi Zardes team captain Jonathan Mensah, the Crew took home their second-ever MLS Cup trophy. Zelarayan, who had been named the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year, registered two goals and one assist against Seattle Sounders FC 3-0, also securing 2020 MLS Cup MVP honors. In 2023, Columbus hoisted the MLS Cup for a third time behind an MVP performance by forward Cucho Hernández.

Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field

The 2022 MLS season marked the first full season for the Crew at Lower.com Field - a dynamic and new soccer-specific stadium in the heart of Columbus in the Astor Park neighborhood.

In 2021, the Black & Gold moved into Lower.com Field, which has a capacity for 20,371 supporters and includes seats that are as much as 28 feet closer to the pitch than any of the seats at Historic Crew Stadium. A defining feature of the stadium is a 220,000 square-foot canopy that covers all supporters during the match, providing shelter from weather conditions throughout the season. The New Nordecke at Lower.com Field is located on the north end of the stadium and is the second-largest supporters section in MLS, with standing-only capacity for 3,364 supporters.

    great...except the delay

    by OGcrew on 7/28/23

I was home for a family reunion and bought tics to the Crew/SL game on 7/23. Admittedly I didn't realize it was a non-league - League Cup game. While in a strange way it was "fun"it was hard to believe they didn't just cancel the game that finally kicked off at 11:15pm (scheduled for 7:30pm) due to weather/storms/lightening. We stayed and got to my brothers house at 2:30am. In the future come up with better policies please and just cancel games like these.

    Rained out, but no refund

    by mb on 7/27/23

The storm held the game up until 11pm on a Sunday with no compensation for fans. I had to leave before it ever started, so I basically flushed $50 down the drain

    Delayed too long

    by Jt on 7/26/23

The game was delayed for 4 hours which was ridiculous. Not Ticketmaster fault !!!

    Severe weather delay

    by Frank on 7/26/23

There was a 4 hour delay due to severe weather. People with families/children could not stay that late for the game. Consideration should be given to those attending who had to leave early. Young children cannot stay up that late. It's not fair to the fans or the players to wait so long. Fans should receive a credit for a future game at least.

    Absolutely Horrible

    by Becky on 7/26/23

Game was delayed about 5 hours. Yep FIVE HOURS due to severe weather and ticketmaster won’t issue a refund. Sorry my 10 year old and I didn’t care to sit through a torrential downpour until 11:30pm to watch a soccer game. Will never attempt this again.

The game was played so late that the tickets were worthless

    by Dan I on 7/26/23

I understand when weather forces a delay, but at some point just reschedule it so people can enjoy it.

    Horrible

    by Laiken on 7/26/23

We were stuck standing on the concrete concourse for 3+ hours due to a weather delay. We could no longer continue waiting as it was a Sunday night and at 10pm with no start time in sight we left. The weather continued but they chose to start the game at 11:30p which lasted until after 1a! UNBELIEVABLE. So much money spent on tickets that was completely waisted and no refund offered.

    Great Atmosphere

    by David on 7/5/23

Brought my grandson, age 6, to his first Crew game. He wants more. The quality play pleased the adults and the stadium’s reverberating sound made it a consuming experience for all.

    Passionate Crew!

    by Paul M on 7/5/23

It's been years since I've been to an MLS game. Decided at last minute, while in town, to go with my two sons. Atmosphere was awesome and of course the Crew won! Great venue! Looking forward to go seeing my hometown DC United.

    Great game!!

    by N on 6/27/23Lower.com Field - Columbus

The game itself was awesome!! I don’t like that there isn’t a cash usage option, especially at the concession stands. Our seats were pretty good. The sound system was loud, but very hard to understand what some people were saying through the microphone. The staff was very polite and helpful. I sorta liked the online tickets, except for the fact that I was worried about not being able to pull them up when we got there.

    Great game!

by Rich N on 6/9/23Lower.com Field - Columbus

Our seats were a little high up, in a corner, but we still had a great view of all the action. Restrooms were close and accessible. Vendors were everywhere. Drink vendor even came up the stands so we didn't have to miss one minute!

    Good game great crowd

by Jojo on 5/10/23Lower.com Field - Columbus

The new-ish stadium is really nice. Plenty of room in the corridors. For this match there wasn't enough food vendors, but usually they have plenty. The crowd although small, was great. We were really into it and were mostly positive.

Bus park 35 min away. Ticket didnt work

    by Bus driver on 4/2/23

Drove one of 2 busses. Dropped kids off at stadium. Had to park busses 35 minutes away. Was sent tickets, that did not work. Had to sit on busses for 5 hours with.no access to restrooms. Could.not get to the stadium to pick students up after the game. .... Never again, and I am alerting drivers at local schools (lancaster, sheridan, bloom carrol, walnut, lakewood, logan elm, hocking and new lex). Word of mouth goes longer than you think

    Fun

    by T. D. on 3/13/23

I’ve been twice. Great atmosphere. Clean. Fun. Food is overpriced and MLS teams aren’t as skilled as European teams. So if you can get past those two things, you’ll enjoy yourself. Gotta do what we can to grow the game in the States.
