Columbus Crew History

The Columbus Crew hold the distinction of being the first of 10 clubs announced in 1994 ahead of the inaugural 1996 Major League Soccer season. In 1999, the club further etched its place in league history when it opened Historic Crew Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium built for MLS. On the pitch, the Columbus Crew have made their mark with three MLS Cup titles, three Supporters’ Shields and one trophy each from the Campeones Cup, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Leagues Cup.

The club’s first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold took the U.S. Open Cup. After earning their first Supporters’ Shield in 2004, Columbus claimed their second in 2008 on the way to winning the MLS Cup. The 2008 championship run was led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who won the league's MVP award in 2008, then closed the season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their final victory over the New York Red Bulls. In 2009, the club secured its third Supporters' Shield.

The Crew took home their second MLS Cup in 2020 behind an MVP performance from the season’s Newcomer of the Year Lucas Zelarayán, who registered two goals and one assist in Columbus’ 3-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC. Building on their title win, the club hoisted the Campeones Cup in 2021, their third MLS Cup in 2023 and Leagues Cup in 2024. The 2024 Crew also finished as runner-up in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The 2022 MLS season marked the first full season for the Crew at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, a dynamic, soccer-specific stadium in the heart of Columbus’ Astor Park neighborhood. Originally called Lower.com Field, the stadium opened in 2021 and was renamed in 2025. Built to replace Columbus’ Historic Crew Stadium, ScottsMiracle-Gro Field holds a capacity of 20,371 supporters. Located on the stadium’s north end, the Nordecke at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field is the second-largest supporters section in MLS, with standing-only capacity for 3,364 fans. During the 2025 MLS season, Crew supporters set the club’s new average attendance record at 22,795 fans per match.

    What a great time at the game! The new stadium is phenomenal with plenty of dining/drinking options. Lines are never too long. Bathrooms are clean and in general, it is so well maintained. The Crew are SO fun to watch. Even if you're not a soccer fan, you should go!

    The new stadium is pretty nice and accommodates nicely for large crowds. Bathrooms are big and CLEAN. The stadium seats were not comfy but had plenty of room. They have so many checkout options and booths for you to get any alcoholic beverages and have a even faster check out process. I honestly didn't have to stand and wait more than 5 minutes anywhere. Which is a huge plus if you are actually trying to enjoy the game. I don't watch soccer habitually, but I sure will be back to enjoy this stadium and watch the Columbus Crew! If you haven't, check it out!

    Atmosphere was like a Browns Game except the crowd was happier and younger. I have been a Browns season ticket holder since the Browns came back into the League.

    Positives: Great night of soccer at Huntington Bank in Cleveland vs. Inter Miami. Family friendly atmosphere. Fans well behaved. Great action. Negatives: Food prices way too expensive. Parking was also expensive and far from stadium. Leaving downtown Cleveland took forever. Need to lower ticket prices and also include a food package for families.
