Colorado Rapids History

The Colorado Rapids are among the original 10 charter clubs of Major League Soccer, debuting in its inaugural season in 1996. It didn't take long for the Western Conference contenders to establish themselves as one of the premier teams in the league. They made it to the MLS Cup final in just their second season and earned eight playoff berths in their first 10 years of play.

In 2010, the Rapids made their second trip to the MLS Cup Final and defeated FC Dallas in a dramatic, come-from-behind 2-1 victory for their first championship. Since then, the team has made several playoff runs and topped the Western Conference following the 2021 regular season.

Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park

The Colorado Rapids shared home turf with the Denver Broncos in their early years. In 2007, the team moved into a state-of-the-art facility to call their own: Dick's Sporting Goods Park, a 19,000-seat capacity stadium located in the suburb of Commerce City. As was the case at Mile High, the venue's exceedingly high altitude — 5,200 feet above sea level — has given the Rapids a considerable home-field advantage, with the club winning roughly two thirds of the games held in their own backyard.

The relocation coincided with a wholesale rebranding, with the team introducing their current mountain-themed logo and a change in uniform colors from black and blue to burgundy and sky blue, to match the other professional sports franchises owned by Kroenke Sports Enterprises, whose roster includes the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, and English Premier League soccer team Arsenal FC.

    Very disappointing

    by Gwendolyn on 7/15/23

I purchased tickets for the game in order to have great seating for the fireworks however, it rained, and they canceled the event. The new event was on a Wednesday and we work so we were unable to go. Also, there was no fireworks on the time they rescheduled us. I would’ve been more happy seeing a different team, play and watching fireworks on the Saturday and then scheduling us with the same team, and it being on a Wednesday with no fireworks I am very disappointed and will not purchase again.

    Disappointed

    by Alazar on 7/15/23

We bought the tickets to enjoy the fireworks and on the rescheduled half game we went to see the fireworks as well but just 44 minutes game and THAT was disappointment to say the least. I think we should get reimbursed for this one we didn’t get everything we paid for.

Poor handling of Rapids fireworks game

    by Eileen on 7/15/23

I spent an outrageous amount of money to see the Rapids play on July 4th and got to see 1/2 of the game and no fireworks due to bad weather. Ticketmaster sent me tickets to view the second half of the game on Wednesday (a week later) without fireworks. The stadium had the fireworks on after the Saturday game which we didn’t have tickets for. I think I should have been reimbursed for my tickets or got to see the Saturday game with fireworks instead. I won’t be paying to see such poor soccer at that exorbitant price again. I guess it’s baseball for me.

    Rapids vs. FC Dallas

    by Nick W on 7/13/23

This was my first MLS game in a couple years, and first time attending a Colorado Rapids game. I have been to about half a dozen MLS stadiums, and driving up to DSG Park, I was not initially impressed as it doesn't look too special from the outside. It looks a little small and bare, and the lights remind me of old FA stadiums that have the original floodlights (e.g. Wrexham). But once in the stadium, I was blown away. For one, you pretty much have a few of the field from anywhere in the stadium with very little view infringements. If you waiting on line at the concessions, unless there is a vendor stand in the way (e.g. beer, ice cream), you can still watch the game while ordering food. Also, I love that the field is sunken and when you enter the stadium all seats are below, with the exception of the box suites. But what I was really blown away with was the service. Having been to well over a hundred professional sporting events at probably over two dozen different venues, the staff at DSG Park was by far the friendliest and helpful I have ever experience. My grandfather attended the game with me and he has had back and hip issues over the last five years that sometimes make walking very difficult. Sure enough, the day before the game he tweaked his back and told us he didn't want to go because he wasn't sure he'd be able to walk around much. I looked into the services offered by DSG and found out that they do provide complimentary wheelchair escort. When pulling up to the stadium I told security and they directed to pull up to Gate G where I could drop him off. I was then escorted into the stadium to customer service where I was able to ask for the wheelchair service. Within five minutes, a wheelchair and staff member were picking my grandfather up from car. They then wheeled him to our section and were about to drop him off. Upon my grandfather attempting to get out, the staff member noticed him struggling and told him to stop. He then radioed in to see what ADA seating was available so that he could watch the game without having to leave the wheelchair and walk down stairs. It was a pleasant surprise to see stadium staff be so proactive and considerate. Now to the game. The atmosphere of the crowd was intense, but not rowdy. The fact that the Rapids were bottom of the table made it that much more impressive. The entire experience was amazing. I would highly recommend any sports fan to attend a Rapids game while in Denver. My uncle and cousin, who moved to Denver from Chicago within the last couple years, couldn't believe it took them this long to attend a game in person and were already talking about going to more games in the future and looking into season tickets for their family.

Ticketmaster should have said obstructed view

Ticketmaster should have said obstructed view. They didnt. I had rails blocking the goal. It was silly.

Absolutely, wonderful time. The crowd was high energy.

by Jawthumb on 5/30/23DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The home team gave it there all with a great performance, regardless of final turn out. Reasonable price beers and food. Lights were so bright thought it was daylight. First ever MLS soccer game and enjoyed every minute of it

    Mediocre at best

by Denver local on 4/4/23DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The Colorado Rapids have been a disappointing team for many years now. The owner is refusing to invest in top quality players. The stadium itself is so far out of downtown that leaves no room for last minute visits to watch a game. (Unlike all the other sports team venues in Denver.) If you combine these two elements and the experience to go watch a Colorado Rapids game will never be better than sub par. Sad but true. Being a denver local and a huge soccer fan, it just is the unfortunate thruth.

Best Entertainment Value in the State

by OptimumFilms on 3/23/23DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The guys play with heart. The stadium is a fun and friendly atmosphere. If you are a fan of Ted Lasso or if you got pulled into Welcome to Wrexham, but you want to be part of a local experience with the same stakes, Rapids in their struggling form fits the bill!

by disappointed on 3/21/23DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

purchased the "Odell Fan Pack" and was unable to redeem the "$16 of loaded food and beverage value" at the game. the attendants i interacted with were kind but had no knowledge of the promotion i was referencing when i asked for assistance and another fan had to help me. ultimately the vouchers were rejected and i did not receive "$16 of loaded food and beverage value." at least the game was entertaining.

DSG Park is a great stadium in a great location! We also got midfield seats at a great price, and ended up getting a free goodie bag with Rapids merch! Weather was perfect and the staff around the stadium were all very friendly!

    Parking

by Red Flag on 8/9/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The parking situation was an absolute disaster. A Flagger flagged us into an “OPEN” lot and we looked for a spot in the Lot for 5-10 mins.. have to put the car in reverse and not being able to get out because it was blocked off. I mean C’Mon man… no communication that the lot was FULL!!! No walkie-talkies??! Then we got sent to the D lot and it was wide open… I’m like just push us there in the first place!! There was plenty of parking in the D lot. If you are paying those guys they need to do a better job. We gave that dude an earful and he doesn’t deserve that either. But that was ridiculous. :(

    Parking nightmare

by Bill on 7/19/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Easy to park going to game, easy getting into game, great seats, wonderful game. However getting out of parking lot after game was the worst. We left a little earlier but still sat in our car for an hour waiting to leave.

    Had A Great Time

by D. A. on 7/8/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Our Group Of Five had a Great Time at the Soccer Game. The mobile Ticketmaster App made quick and easy access to the venue and the seats were were excellent. The venue has a "no cash" policy which required electronic payments only with all vendors. This policy was not communicated to the patrons prior to the event. The Fireworks Display after the July $th Game was totally awesome. We all had a Great Time.

    Parking aucks

by Stand still survivor on 7/7/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The parking is not good at all. 3 entrances/exits make for waiting in the parking lot standstill for an hour. It has been like this for years and not just soccer events!

Excellent stadium, fun game, parking nightmare

by Alex D on 7/7/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Stadium was fantastic, there is no bad seat. Food and drinks were very good. Game was great, July 4th fireworks were superb. And then the magical evening was ruined when we sat in our car, not moving at all, for an hour trying to exit the parking lot. Complete with horns honking, people cutting each other off, flipping each other off. Surely there is a better way to get cars out of a parking lot.
