Colorado Rapids History

The Colorado Rapids are among the original 10 charter clubs of Major League Soccer, debuting in its inaugural season in 1996. It didn't take long for the Western Conference contenders to establish themselves as one of the premier teams in the league. They made it to the MLS Cup final in just their second season and earned eight playoff berths in their first 10 years of play.

In 2010, the Rapids made their second trip to the MLS Cup Final and defeated FC Dallas in a dramatic, come-from-behind 2-1 victory for their first championship. Since then, the team has made several playoff runs and topped the Western Conference following the 2021 regular season.

Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park

The Colorado Rapids shared home turf with the Denver Broncos in their early years. In 2007, the team moved into a state-of-the-art facility to call their own: Dick's Sporting Goods Park, a 19,000-seat capacity stadium located in the suburb of Commerce City. As was the case at Mile High, the venue's exceedingly high altitude — 5,200 feet above sea level — has given the Rapids a considerable home-field advantage, with the club winning roughly two thirds of the games held in their own backyard.

The relocation coincided with a wholesale rebranding, with the team introducing their current mountain-themed logo and a change in uniform colors from black and blue to burgundy and sky blue, to match the other professional sports franchises owned by Kroenke Sports Enterprises, whose roster includes the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, and English Premier League soccer team Arsenal FC.

Best Away stadium I have visited!

by Col-Pol on 5/25/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Even though my team lost, this was by far my favorite away game I have been to. Staff was very friendly, extremely easy to find our seats, and not a bad seat in the house! Plan to come see a game again!

    Charlotte Game

by Nunya Bizness on 4/26/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Game was nice, good family atmosphere. Too bad they harassed me with solicitations via phone calls and emails since I had opted out of that when I bought the ticket. What happened to following teh law? Is it ticketmaster who should have passed this along? The Rapids who ignored my non-consent? Garbage technology that didn't distinguish? Who knows but I'll be damned if I ever buy a ticket for a rapids game again.

    Open the Gates!

by Mile High CHill on 3/15/22DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

KSE needs to properly staff their events and open the gates. It led to really long wait lines ahead of kickoff. More importantly, if emergency egress is ever needed the available gates are not enough for quick exit. Additionally, KSE's decision to raise rent for G&B Fish & Chips is a classic move by them and nothing but a money grab at the expense of the gameday experience. 1876 is now a shell of itself with no real draw anymore.

    Good game hard to watch

by Squinty on 11/28/21DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Don’t sit in eastern stands. You’ll be looking at the sun all game. Otherwise a good experience!

The concessions at DSGP are too pricey. Stadium atmosphere is unmatched though. Go Rapids!!!

    Rapids Soccer Game

by Shawn on 11/10/21DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Game was great but having to access Ticketmaster for the tickets was extremely cumbersome. The person I went with had the same experience and standing in line we beard several others say the same. Access your email to get to your site only to have to reset my password again and then fish through the site was a pain. Doing this as you’re driving to the game or standing in line was worse. Why not just include the bar code in your receipt email?

    Good experience

by Dominique on 10/27/21DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Enjoyable experience, nice field where all seats seem to have a good view of the game. I had seats on 3rd row and it was almost too close to see the whole field. Seats in a higher row such as 10 to 15 might give a better overall view. They are cheaper too.

    Problems with TicketMaster

by Tom on 9/28/21DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

The event was fine. The problem was TicketMaster. When I tried to place my tickets in my G Pay App, it told me I must download the G Pay app. It was already installed and had been used for several other tickets. Later, when I tried again to place the tickets in G Pay again, it told me it had already been placed, which it hadn't. When I tried to contact TicketMaster, I only received an EMail saying that they were short staffed and could not respond. Is this the service I paid $11.25 per ticket for? My son (a computer engineer) also tried to find the ticket. He eventually found it on a G Pay online account that TicketMaster had apparently created.

    Great game, Terrible concessions

by Joe A on 8/10/21DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

First game at this venue, great game but the food concessions were terrible, specifically the Nachos with Cold cheese and stale Popcorn.

    Great venue, great views.

    by R. D. on 8/6/21

There is virtually no bad seat in the house. The benefit of a smallish stadium is that you can sit almost anywhere and see things well. On the down side the dirt parking lot on one side is rough to walk through, but there’s a paved one farther in. The venders are ok, but selection is limited relitively.

    Good event, terrible food service

by Kate on 10/2/19DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

Enjoyed the game and the Tim Howard retirement ceremony. The problem is the long lines for food and beverages. 2 games attended this season. Each time we missed 1/4 of the match to get something to eat or drink. 150 people standing in most lines. I will not return to Dick Sporting Good's park for another event until this problem is rectified. Measure vendor's performance. Set standard for contract renewal. Enforce standards. Fans obviously benefit. Venue and vendors will benefit too, from higher sales. Although many people were in lines, we noticed a lot of season ticket fans not partaking of refreshments and now we know why.

    Everything great except sound system

by Da Fish on 9/10/19DICK'S Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City

We had an absolute blast. My boyfriend and I brought his younger cousins to their first game; they don't really know anything about soccer, but they definitely had fun. We got a lot of food and treats, learned a lot about soccer, and enjoyed hanging out on the field afterwards to watch the fireworks. The only thing I'd say that was lacking/slacking was that whenever anyone was talking on the big screen, we couldn't hear a word they were saying. They were very muffled, and unless there were subtitles, we didn't know what they were talking about. Other than that, though, everything was great.
